WELCOME.It’s hard to believe that it’s twenty-five years since the very first Artists in Beara exhibition at Beara Community School. That exhibition showcased the work of twenty-five artists living and working on the Beara peninsula, and was such a success that it was repeated – in various permutations – for many years thereafter.
The exhibition also led directly to the foundation of Beara Arts Festival in 1993. The festival became an annual event, running until 2004. In that time, it featured numerous art exhibitions and installations, artists’ talks, literary workshops and readings, as well as musical and theatrical performances.
In 2016, we revived Beara Arts Festival with Beyond the Beyonds, a retrospective to mark the eightieth birthday of John Kingerlee, a long-time resident in Claonach and Kilcatherine.
The festival also featured a wealth of local literary, musical and artistic talent, with talks, readings, workshops and musical performances.
This year, our programme is more diverse again. We are grateful for the support of The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Cork County Council Arts Office in allowing us to commission On the Edge of Darkness, a new musical composition for piano, strings and electronics, by David Harmax; Beaches Storage Project, a trail of participative art installations by Bénédicte Coleman; and Dursey Island Discs, featuring the voices of eight people from or associated with Dursey.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the film The Purple Taxi/Un Taxi Mauve, much of which was shot in Eyeries. To mark the occasion, we are screening The Purple Taxi in the Village Hall.
And we are hosting another Artists in Beara exhibition, back where it all began, at Beara Community School.
We hope our 2017 edition of Beara Arts Festival will be as warmly received.
