increasingly, armed forces worldwide require a universal fire support system.

in the past, armies have depended on heavy machine guns or add-on grenade laun-

chers, but neither is an ideal solution. with normal small arms, effective aimed

shots become less likely as the range increases. moreover, conventional rifle

ammunition provides no fragmentation effect, and is largely ineffective against

armoured vehicles. add-on grenade launchers, on the other hand, have the disad-

vantage of a relatively low rate of fire.

in order to close this effectiveness gap in infantry weapons, heckler & koch has

developed a long-range grenade machine gun with a large indirect area of effect

the gmg in calibre 40 mm x 53 (high velocity).

thanks to its high rate of fire, combined with the fragmentation and anti-armour

effect of the 40 mm rounds, t he gmg combines the advantages of machine guns and

grenade launchers. what is more, it provides high operational flexibility. it can

be used either on a tripod as an infantry weapon for engaging ground targets, or

installed on a mount for use on land vehicles or patrol boats. integrated safety

features and well thought-ou t mechanical elemen ts make the gmg what it is: one of

the most technologically advanced grenade machine guns in the world.

feed system: is driven by the bolt, and feeds the belted

ammunition in two even steps when the bolt moves for-

wards and back. the feed can be changed between the

left and right sides of the weapon without tools.

ammunition box

The belted 40 mm x 53 ammunition is fed from a NATO PA 120 ammunition box with a

capacity of 32 rounds. Optionally it is possible to feed 16 rounds (40 mm) from a .50 calibre

ammunition box.

tripod

The lightweight, telescoping tripod can be adjusted to a large number of different ring

positions, thus providing increased tactical exibility. Alternatively the GMG can also be

mounted on an M3 tripod.

The feed can be changed between the left-hand and right-hand

sides of the weapon without tools.

reflex sight

Optionally available as a tritium sight or as a battery-powered sight system. Allows quick

target acquisition at ranges up to 1500 m.

shoulder support

Height and length adjustable for optimal adaptation to the

shooters body size.

charging handle

Located centrally on the end of the

receiver.

The foldable iron ladder sight allows target acquisition at ranges

up to 600 m.

bolt system

Rugged blowback bolt system, ring from the open bolt position. Here the ammunition is fed

directly from the belt into the chamber. This bolt system can be used to re all types of

40 mm x 53 cartridges.

upper mount

Buffers and minimises the recoil forces.

precision aiming device

Adjustable for elevation and windage for precise aiming. Choice of

curved or straight designs available.

ballast sack retainer

The legs of the tripod each have a retainer hook for the use of an

optional ballast sack.
