A dedicated, enthusiastic and personable individual with undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in social science, who is looking for opportunities to utilise this knowledge as well as skills developed over ten years working in Higher Education administration and management.

Communities and Partnerships Project Assistant, Lifelong Learning Centre, University of Leeds (August 2005 – present)

Providing administrative support to the Communities and Partnerships team; working with a focus on the local area to widen access to Higher Education for adults from all backgrounds, including those that have traditionally been under-represented in UK universities.

Leeds Editor, Sandman Magazine (October 2007 - August 2008)

Acting as one of five regional sub-editors for a free music magazine distributed across the North of England and read by an estimated 50,000 people.

My flexible approach to working has proven invaluable during my time at the University – as the C&P team aims to be as responsive as possible the kinds of work I have been involved with have varied significantly during my time in post.

In recognition of the professionalism with which I have approached my evolving role I have increasingly been given more responsibility and trusted to work on my own initiative, culminating in a six-month secondment to the post of C&P Project Officer.

As such I have had overall responsibility for ensuring the effective administration of all C&P activities – this has been a highly rewarding experience which has spurred me on to seek to develop my career further.

My organisational and time management skills have been drawn upon to juggle a range of commitments in and outside of work, successfully meeting often competing deadlines.

Building on my involvement as a contributor to Sandman magazine I was made a regional sub-editor and performed this function for ten months whilst retaining my full-time position at the University of Leeds.

For a three year period I combined full-time work with the completion of an MA with The Open University.

My role at the University has centred on organising often complex events with and for partners in Further Education and the community and voluntary sectors, adults undertaking formal and informal learning as well as colleagues working elsewhere in Higher Education.

o Most recently I have been responsible for coordinating the planning, organisation and delivery of the LLC’s 2014 ‘Spring into Summer’ programme of learning-for-pleasure courses and events, offered in support of the University’s public engagement agenda.

o In 2011 I administrated the 18th EULAR Sonography Course, a three-day residential conference at The Queens Hotel in Leeds attended by more than one hundred healthcare professionals from around the world.

My secondment to the post of C&P Project Officer meant covering a full-time position whilst only working four days a week – this required effective time management and a great deal of forward planning, including the delegation of tasks where appropriate.

Skills Profile

I have displayed strong interpersonal skills both in my professional life and in a voluntary capacity.

o Being a member of the C&P team means supporting individuals whose familiarity with and confidence in accessing Higher Education can be extremely limited, and who often need to be shown sensitivity, patience and understanding.

Over ten years volunteering as a Listener for Leeds Samaritans I have demonstrated the ability to ‘actively’ listen, to empathise and to deliver responses tailored to the needs of the individual service user.

o I am also the leader of my shift, meaning I am responsible both for the conduct of the other volunteers I am on duty with and for ensuring that they are properly supported.

In tandem with my academic studies I have consolidated an excellent command of English by writing extensively for a range of audiences.

I am closely involved with both external and internal communications at the LLC, helping to manage the departmental website, writing blog posts, submitting articles to the staff newsletter and taking and circulating the minutes from meetings.

Throughout my time as an undergraduate I contributed music and film reviews to the Leeds student newspaper, co-editing the Politics section in my final year.

Since graduation I have continued to write music reviews and features for magazines such as Leeds Guide, Vibrations and Sandman.

I continuously hone my IT skills, developing expertise in a range of Microsoft Office applications as well as web-based systems including Twitter and the WordPress blogging / content management tool.
