Our Mission Statement

We are the people of God

Good Hope’s

Good News

March

2020

Greetings from your Deacon’s desk!

I’m reminded of an old saying … ‘progress is the sound of heavy

breathing.’ It means that it takes a lot of work from a lot of people to

move things in a positive direction (even though that direction might be

all new, and the path forward might not be fully known.) Think of it this

way, whenever we’ve tackled a big project … whether it’s a job in the

yard, or some other house project, or if it’s just the normal routine things

that need to be done, like cleaning the bathrooms … when we put our

‘all’ into it to get the job done, it can leave us feeling tired and exhausted

and breathing a little heavy. Moving forward, even when there’s

uncertainty, is hard work. But that’s what it means to work in the

kingdom of God. As men and women of faith, we listen to God’s voice

(sometimes we hear it as the faintest whisper, and sometimes we hear

God’s voice as loud as a freight train), we discuss and debate, we come

to consensus, then we do the best we possibly can to put into action

plans that we think will move Christ’s church in the way God desires.

Thank you to everybody who is working to move Christ’s church forward

in and around our community and neighborhoods. It’s difficult work and

can leave us tired and exhausted and breathing a little heavy.

Fortunately, we are beginning our Lenten journey now, and while the

work doesn’t necessarily slow down during Lent, it is a season in which

we are encouraged to catch our spiritual breath.

During Ash Wednesday, we were reminded that we are dust, and to dust

we shall return. In other words, we are mortal, and even all the busy

kingdom-building work that we’re doing doesn’t change that fact.

Someday we will all return to dust. And if that’s all there was, our lives

would be dramatically different. But the good news is that our return to

dust isn’t all there is … that through the life, death, and resurrection of

Jesus the Christ, even though we are all sinful and broken people, we

will all live again someday! That is indeed good news!!

So, you’re invited to take a breath each day throughout your Lenten

journey. Maybe you incorporate a special Lenten tradition into your

lives. But whether you do or don’t have a special practice during Lent,

know that you are loved by God … and even though we will all die

someday, we are given the hope and promise of life, through God’s

grace.

Your brother in Christ,

Deacon Keith

Ask The Council

We received 2 Questions this month:

1. The Children’s Christmas program was very disappointing. It was actually a Children’s sermon. Please allow the children to actively participate by singing and performing. Thank you.

Response:

We had received a lot of feed back regarding the Children’s program. There will be changes for next year’s program.

2. In light of all of the increasing attacks at church I feel it would be in our congregation's best interest to reconsider allowing designated people to carry concealed weapons. Having our own security personnel at church services would minimize potential loss of lives should evil enter our sanctuary. I believe God would want us to defend ourselves.

Response:

The council takes our security very seriously. The alarm system installed last year has 3 panic buttons. Once pushed, these panic button immediately notify the Garden City Police that we have a serious situation. They are not routed through our alarm company at all…they go directly to the police department. The Good Hope Safety Committee did have the Chief of Police from Imlay City speak to them and his recommendation was not to have non law enforcement personal carry weapons in the church. He has presented this same message throughout the Southeast Michigan Synod churches. The council affirms the State Of Mich-igan's policy of no firearms in church, except for law enforcement personnel.

Thank you for your input.

As a reminder…there is a box in the narthex for you to put your written and signed questions in. The Council reviews them at each council meeting, and responds back to them in the next newsletter. Everyone is always welcome to bring your questions, concerns or ‘high fives’ to the council in person. The council meets the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm in the Fellowship Hall.

Parsonage Sale

A quick update on where we are right now. The property was split into two parcels late last year. In January we received notice of the new parcel numbers. We completed the application to have the City Inspection. The inspection did bring to light issues that need to be corrected and additional information we need to provide. Some of the simpler items to be corrected are replacing faucets and electrical switches. Two of the things requiring additional information are inspections of the boiler and the chimney. Properties is on top of the list. The parsonage has been recently cleaned from top to bottom. The next step is to make arrangements for a realtor(s) to review the property.

+ Christian Symbols +

IHS

This sacred monogram originally appeared as “IHC,” the first three letters of “IHCOYC,” the Greek word for Jesus. Over time the Greek “C” was replaced by the Latin “S” to become “IHS.” There are many interpretations given to the letters “IHS,” including the Latin “Iesus Hominum Salvator” (Jesus, Savior of Men) and the English “I (Christ) Have Suffered.”

Bible Quiz

Who came to Je- sus by night to ask him questions, and what famous Bible verse was part of Jesus’ answer? A. Martha; “I am the resurrection and the life …” B. Peter; “Do to others what you would have them do …” C. Thomas; “I am the way and the truth and the life …” D. Nicodemus; “For God so loved the world …”

Village Theater Outing

We’re planning another theater night, to see Steel

Magnolias at the Village Theater at Cherry Hill. The theater is located at Cherry Hill and Ridge Road. We will be going on Saturday, April 4, at

7:00pm. Tickets are $18 for adults, and $16 for seniors. Please sign up on the sign-up sheet in

the Narthex by March 8th if you want to join us,

indicating how many tickets you need. It is general seating, no assigned seating. We will be going out to dinner prior to the play (optional).

About Steel Magnolias: The action is set in

Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not

she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser,; an eccentric

millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is

about to marry a ‘good ole boy’. Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play

moves toward tragedy in the second act. The sudden realization of their mortality affects them, but also draws on the underlying strength—and

love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, fun-ny and marvelously amiable company in good

times and bad. Rated PG. Approx. run time 2hrs.
