Lise FullerThis year I have been working on illustrating an herbal book that I am writing, so I am keeping my eye and hand busy with drawing which is different than pastel painting. Now I am back in the studio working on a painting I realize that just the process of drawing on a regular basis really keeps your hand and eye sharp.I am interested in landscapes, they are such a challenge because you want your paintings to say something different than just trees and sky. I am interested in painting water probably because I spend a great deal of time kayaking. Water is interesting to paint because there are so many colors involved, blue being only one of them. It is a challenge to capture the depth of a pond with colors. In my yellow barn painting I was working on the colors of a winter landscape which are the total opposite of the summer greenery. I love the subtle colors of a winter landscape. The landscapes of the Adirondack continue to interest me as I keep coming back to them for inspiration.

Beverly Saunders – My work in pastels are a constant study in color, texture and the relationships of light and atmosphere. By capturing time and space in landscapes and still life, I create a sense of peace and serenity. In today’s fast pace world these qualities are hard to come by.I have been invited to Show in the Rare Earth Gallery in Glens Falls July and August North Country Arts sponsored.Art at the Lake, Lake George Arts ProjectJuly 17 to August 22 in Bolton Landing “Next Summer” Storefront. I have 3 commissions in progress...

Jennifer Richard-Morrow – I tried a sample of a new pastel paper called Shinzen. It is an acid-free recycled paper from India. The weight is about 125 lb. and has a lovely deckled edge on all sides. It comes in 25 colors. The texture is a woven texture somewhat similar to museum board. It will not hold as many layers of pastel as a sanded paper, but is good for light work. I found it reasonably priced at between $14 and $20 for a pack of 25 sheets.Has anyone tried that new Global Pastel Premier paper yet?Fort Oranje Art http://fortoranjeart.artspan.com/

Corey Pitkin – I taught a workshop on Portraits From Photos on 4/4 at the Shirt Factory in Glens Falls that was attended by a few APS members - It looks like it’ll be offered again in the Fall. I also have upcoming workshops at Saratoga Arts: All Media Portrait Workshop on May 16th and Drawing Children from Photographs on June 13th. David Francis, PSA-MP – After a very successful show at the Shirt Factory Gallery, I showed at City Hall Gallery in Glens Falls during March and now have an opening this Friday at Clement Art in Troy, NY. Seems I’ve been on the road with artwork for most of the year, so far. Also, two small pastels heading to Albuquerque, NM for the IAPS Pastelworld Convention show. Whew!Coming up in May I will be the selections and awards juror for the Rochester Art Club in Rochester, NY. I will also be talking with the folks that have started the Western New

York Pastel Society, seeing how we can work together to further the pastel medium. The Adirondack National is coming together very nicely. Dear Diane,Recently I had a show of my work in the Adirondacks. My work had also been accepted in a couple of regional juried exhibits. Then someone asked me if I had a website and I have to admit that “No, I don’t.“ What is the importance of having a website when it seems that there is such an abundance of art sites online already? Gilles

Dear Gilles, What a great question. First I am guessing your work has all been photographed for your record. For your exhibit you had to do a bit of writing about yourself like a resume, a bio and an artist statement. Now those events are over and the work is leaning against the studio wall. Perhaps someone would like to get a hold of you because they liked your work. How does that happen in this day and age? You got it. The internet. Artists are now in a position of being in charge of their own marketing and PR. One of the big things the artist can do is create their own website. People look for information on just about everything on the web. Not in the phone book or the newspaper. “What was the artists name whose work I saw at the gallery last week? O, here it is on the web. And look he work just an hour from here. I would like to see more…” Get the picture? If you are not there they will give up. Fortunately there are quite a few website companies that cater to the artist who want to build a site with their own work. Look in any art magazine to find one, explore and decide which one is right for you. Better yet is asking fellow artists what they are using and how they like the company. Explore your options and test run a couple. A website is a powerful tool to get your work out there. After all one doesn’t want their work to languish in the studio but be loved and enjoyed by a collector. Good Luck!

Dear Diane, Recently I have been seeing the term plein air associated with painting. I get that it is painting landscape but what is the benefit of doing that? Robin

Dear Robin, Plein air was initiated in France in the 1850s when the students of the Barbizon school where assigned to paint outside for the summer during school breaks to keep skills sharp. It became doable at that time due to the invention of lead tubes that could hold paint. That made it easy to take color out of the studio to make paintings. What is compelling to me as a pastel artist is being outside and painting what I see. Landscape plein air is a continual challenge of changing of light, weather and bugs. I have found that I have learned so much about composition, decision-making and how light can be captured in pastel, that I will deal with just about all elements except the cold and snow to get out and paint. Plein air may not be for everyone but where we live - when you can fall out of your car and find a scene to paint - makes it easy to try out on a sunny day. Try it and you will be hooked. You will do almost anything to get out and paint. Have fun!

Dear Diane, Thank you for writing this column. The fun facts are interesting. I I am looking forward to the next edition.Sandi

Thanks Sandi and thank you to everyone who sent contributed to this edition of the APS Newsletter Keep painting! Diane

Just Asking?Diane answers art/pastel questions

Robin McCondichie - Glad to be a member of the APS. I have a background in oil painting and drawing but have been captured by soft pastels in recent years. Always learning...always exploring - this vibrant medium.I have taught art to all ages and in several mediums; currently I am limiting my classes to my studio space giving me more time for my own work. I’ve also been quite busy with the new sister society, Pastel Society of Western New York.6497 Powell Hill RdNaples, NY [email protected]

Diane Leifheit – We traveled to Costa Rica this April and got warm again. I took a small package of travelling art materials to make some plein air paintings. This one of the Arenal Volcano was close by where we were staying. The view changed ALL the time. Boy am I out of practice. Sandra is a February 2014 Face to Face portrait. Ingrid Van Slyke –The long winter allowed me to work on my snow landscapes. Although it was hard to get outside to paint, I tried my best. Every day I saw wonderful shapes and shadows in the snow and tried to take on the fun challenges they created. I even bought a new set of Great American “lights” that work wonderfully when painting snow. I am looking forward to entering our first Adirondack Pastel Society National exhibit and wish everyone good luck! In June I head for the IAPS convention and hope to see some of you there.Facebook page- Pastel Paintings by Ingrid Van Slyke [email protected] Polarity Way,Lake Placid. NY 12946518-569-1548- cell

Joann Quinlivan – My husband and I are traveling by car and camper to California.I plan on spending time painting plein air in Laguna Beach and San Clemente while we are visiting family. As a past president of the United Society of Pastel Artists, I have many artist friends in the area and plan on spending time catching up. On our way home I will be volunteering at IAPS and learning as much as I can. Hopefully I can share with APS members when I return. here is a pastel of Yosemite Falls, which is on tour with Paint the Parks, at the Coutts Museum of Art in Kansas. Just in keeping with the West Coast theme!joannquinlivanart.blogspot.

Van Gogh on Plein-Air Painting: “Just try going outside and painting things on the spot! All sorts of things happen then. I had to pick off a good hundred or more flies from [my] canvases ... not to mention dust and sand [nor]the fact that if one carries them through heath and hedgerows for a couple of hours, a branch or two is likely to scratch them ... and that the effects one wants to capture change as the day wears on.”(Letter to Theo van Gogh, July 1885)

Lynn Couey – I’m fairly new to pastel and have been a member of the ADK Pastel Society for three years. While I have no formal art training, I fell in love with pastel after a frustrating experience trying to learn watercolor painting. I soon found that I could get more immediate results with the brilliance of pure color that pastels provide.I still work full time, so it’s challenging to find the time to paint and attend classes. I am fortunate to have a small art studio in my backyard and enjoy painting landscapes and still life (especially flowers). I have also given abstract expression a try. The cactus painting was created from a photo I took in Arizona in my mother’s neighborhood. This winter I spent a week in Aruba and fell in love with the beautiful turquoise water and

white sand beach of the Caribbean. It has inspired the current painting on my easel. I have been studying with Robert Carsten over the past three years at the Art Center of the Capital District and enjoy summer classes at View in Old Forge.
