2nd into 3rd Summer Climb Math!
Greetings from your 3rd Grade teaching team! A note about readiness for 3rd grade math: 3rd Grade Math is fun, filled with individualized activities, games, manipulative use, challenges, and is integrated with Science at times. Our math lessons are based on skills learned during primary years and are integrated with Science. The most important mathematical skill needed for the first week of 3rd grade math is automatic knowledge of basic addition and subtraction facts. (Automaticity = respond to facts in 90 seconds.) Knowledge of addition and subtraction facts will be tested right away the first week of school and are building blocks for the first unit of study in our math curriculum. Find below the second grade expectation for this as well as some fact practice resources for summer: 2.NBT.B.5. Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Web practice: https://www.mathplayground.com/index_addition_subtraction.html http://www.abcya.com/math_facts_game.htm https://www.granby.k12.ct.us/uploaded/faculty/wyzika/Dice_and_Card_Games_to_Practice_Math_Facts.pdf https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/articles/teaching-content/7-games-practice-math-facts/ https://www.factmonster.com/math/flashcards http://www.math-aids.com/Mixed_Problems/Mixed_Problems_Drills.html https://www.math-drills.com/addition.php https://www.math-drills.com/subtraction.php We also recommend that children come to 3rd comfortable using an analog clock and able to tell time by 5 minute increments. Know which hand is the hour hand, which is the minute hand. We will build on this knowledge when learning to calculate elapsed time. 2.MD.C.7. Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m. Practice resources below: http://mrnussbaum.com/clockworks/ https://www.splashmath.com/time-games-for-3rd-graders http://www.math-aids.com/Time/
