A MAN NAMED MARTIN–PART 3: THE MOVEMENT led by Pastor Heckert in the cafeteria

(P212). From Luther’s 95 Theses in 1517 to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, God was at work in the

Reformation. Fierce debates over Scripture, church doctrine, and late medieval church practice led to

theological positions articulating salvation as God’s grace in action, with man being left to add nothing

to his own salvation. In A Man Named Martin–Part 3, viewers will see how the Reformation

transformed European society and, eventually, left a profound impression around the globe. Join us

for the video and discussion in the cafeteria during the adult instruction and fellowship hour!

ADULT INFORMATION (NEW MEMBER) CLASS led by Pastor French in the fellowship hall

(F202). This class is for all those who would like to join our congregation or just learn more about the

teachings of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. For members, this is also a great opportunity to

brush up on your fundamentals of the faith and to meet some potential new members. Everyone is

welcome!

A DEEPER LOOK moderated by Grace Gillespie in Room P202 (green classroom). This group

discusses the Bible lessons (pericopes) which are read in church each Sunday. You are invited every

Sunday, but will not be lost if you miss a Sunday. This is a casual class with lots of interaction. We

pray for each other and care for each other. Join us today and every Sunday.

What are the 2 year olds - 5th graders learning about? Starting with Genesis, we will work through

the Bible in three years through major Bible stories from the Old Testament, the Gospels, and Acts.

Students will learn and grow in faith alongside their peers as they explore the Bible, draw connections

to the Small Catechism, and learn the traditions of the Lutheran Church. If you have questions about

What are the 6th - 8th graders learning about? Led by Bill & Karin Crum each week, the class will

aid students in their preparation for confirmation. The class has allowed for incredible discussion and

participation by all who attend. The students WILL be in Scripture and the Catechism at EVERY

stories can both amuse and instruct. In fact, they often instruct precisely because their hearers enjoy

them. People listen better to what interests them than to what bores them. It is often the case, therefore,

that good teachers are also good storytellers, and our Lord Jesus Christ is the best of both.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY - “LUKE, PART 1” led by Jan Harris on Tuesdays 9:30-11:00 a.m. in

the fellowship hall (F202). Blessings for the reader, as you study Luke’s carefully researched account

of Jesus’s life. Consider yourself on a journey with Luke to learn more about Jesus of Nazareth, whose

body, crucified for the forgiveness of our sins, becomes the temple of the living God.

THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY led by Pastor Heckert on Thursdays 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the

conference room. We are (a bit belatedly) back in action! Join us every Thursday night as we resume our

study of Genesis! Come for the discussion and strengthening of your faith, but stay for the off-topic

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR: Life Thoughts are designed to help pastors and

congregations see the church year through the lens of the sanctity of human life; they are based on

the appointed readings from Lutheran Service Book. September 30 – “I can’t carry this alone”

(Numbers 11:14). Moses echoes the emotions of sudden pregnancy, chronic conditions, and advocating

for life among communities that ignore. “You’re not alone,” says the Lord (Numbers 11:16, Mark 9:40,

James 5:14). “Lean on my people.” Jesus Christ goes with you. The communion of saints shares your

joys and sorrows. Sometimes speaking up for life starts with approaching the lonely. Lord of the

Church, cause our fellowship to show Your love. Amen.

SUNDAY MORNING FOOD FELLOWSHIP: To help with our Sunday morning fellowship at

St. James, we encourage families to bring in breakfast food to share with our congregation. This will

allow church and school families to give back to their church family by sharing some tasty breakfast

foods. Each week we will gather sponsor families to bring in food for the Sunday school hour. St. James

has typically purchased between 6-9 dozen donuts each Sunday for this time. So instead of St. James

purchasing the donuts, each family can sign up to bring in coffee cake, sweet rolls, fruit, bagels, etc.

Please make sure your donation is in the cafeteria before the 8:00 a.m. service each week. Food items

may be dropped off in the cafeteria after school on Friday or during Saturday evening service. Please

label the food items for Sunday morning fellowship.

Questions/Answers:

1. Do the foods have to be homemade? No, you are welcome to bring in homemade food, but you

are also welcome to bring in purchased food.

2. Can an organization within St. James sponsor a week? Yes, we are strongly encouraging

organizations, classes, etc. to support a week.

3. What if we don’t get a sponsor for a week? Then we will order extra donuts for that week.

4. Will coffee and juice continue to be provided during this time? Yes, the normal coffee and

juice will continue to be provided by St. James. The sponsors are just providing the food.

We are going to do a trial run of this donut hour supplement for the months of September and October.

ALTAR GUILD MEMBERS: The next Altar Guild meeting is on Monday, October 22 staring at

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: As we get closer to the completion of the work in the sanctuary, plans

are being made to celebrate the rededication with just one worship service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday,

November 11 for the weekend. This congregational-wide service will be followed by a carry-in lunch.

Keep watching for more information that will follow as details are completed. Also, keep in mind that

there will be a celebration on Saturday the 17th for the entire Lafayette Lutheran community. We look

Marriage Is a Sign that Manifests the Gospel of Christ and His Church

Humanity is created in the image and likeness of God. “It is not good that the man should be

alone” (Gen. 2:18). For the Lord Himself is a perfect communion of three Persons — the Father,

Son and Holy Spirit — in one God. Therefore, “the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the

man, and while he slept took one of his ribs,” which “he made into a woman” and brought “to the

man” (Gen. 2:21–22). It is for this reason that “a man shall leave his father and his mother and

hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Gen. 2:24; Mark 10:7). This great mystery

of holy marriage signifies Christ Jesus, the incarnate Son of God, and His Bride, the Church.

Divorce and all manner of adultery contradict and undermine this sign, and in doing so, they

confess a false Christ and a false gospel. “What therefore God has joined together, let not man

separate” (Mark 10:9). In truth, Christ Jesus has atoned for all such sins, and He has perfected

marriage in Himself “through suffering,” that He might bring “many sons to glory” in His

resurrection (Heb. 2:8–10).

Life Chain is a peaceful gathering where participants stand

silently in prayer. We hold signs that read “Abortion hurts

women,” “Abortion kills children,” “Jesus forgives and heals,”

and “Lord, forgive us and our nation.” On the back of each sign,

there are scripture verses, songs, and suggestions for prayer.

This is an event where we are gathered as a group; yet

individually we are praying for our nation, for the unborn, and for

those who find themselves facing an unplanned pregnancy with

uncertainty. There is no shouting, no pacing/picketing or loud

protesting. However, it is still very much a “demonstration” of

our pro-life beliefs to our community.

We have a new location! We are excited to announce that the

2018 Life Chain will be along the newly renovated Sagamore

Parkway. Our hope is that the new location will provide many

benefits including much greater message exposure due to higher

traffic counts and more close parking to the event. Our hope is

to spread our message from Kossuth Street to Union Street.

Past Life Chains have certainly made a huge impact locally, as

Lafayette witnesses men and women, girls and boys of all ages

unify across many denominations for the cause of life. This is

a vital time in our community, state, and nation. This is an

excellent opportunity to stand up and make a difference!

If you are interested in being part of the 2018 Life Chain, please

add your name to the signup sheet in the cafeteria prior to

October 1 so that signs can be prepared for our St. James group.
