We start with a bucolic Slavonic Dance, welcome back violinist Adele Anthony for the lyrical, dramatic Violin Concerto, and finish with the iconic “New World” Symphony, presented as part of the New York Philharmonic’s The New World Initiative. 30 th Anniversary SEASON November 6, 2016 at 3PM RUSSIAN ROMANTICS BARBARA YAHR, CONDUCTOR IMRI TALGAM, PIANO Prokofiev Romeo & Juliet (selections from Suites 1 & 2) Prokofiev Lieutenant Kijé Suite Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 With the passionate balcony scene, the masked ball, and a dramatic duel, Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet beautifully retells Shakespeare’s immortal tale of star-crossed lovers. Rachmaninoff’s beloved Second Piano Concerto is just as romantic, featuring Imri Talgam, winner of the 11th International Piano Competition of Orléans. Prokofiev’s witty, brass-powered Lieutenant Kijé Suite rounds out the program. From the love story of Daphnis and Chloé to the escapades of Don Juan, Valentine’s Day comes early this year as the GVO shares its love of music with orchestral showpieces featuring our own musicians in the solo spotlight. March 19, 2017 at 3PM BEETHOVEN 9! BARBARA YAHR, CONDUCTOR RACHEL ROSALES, SOPRANO JAN WILSON, MEZZO-SOPRANO TENOR TBA PETER STEWART, BASS Beethoven Symphony No. 9 Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is a powerful statement of joy, love, and humanity. For this iconic work, the composer’s final symphonic utterance, the GVO is joined by the Seraphim Chorus (directed by Robert Long) and acclaimed soloists. May 7, 2017 at 3PM BROADWAY DOWNTOWN BARBARA YAHR, CONDUCTOR GUEST ARTISTS TBA Selections from Broadway shows Our 30 th anniversary season finale pays tribute to two other New York City music- loving institutions: Broadway and Tin Pan Alley. Featuring classics by Gershwin, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Lerner and Loewe, and more. Tickets available at www.gvo.org or at the door.
