HISTORYGreenwich began as a temporary trading post founded by Captain Adrian Block in 1614. The land was eventually purchased from the Native Americans and became a settlement in 1640. Greenwich remained a small community until the 1920s when it doubled in size and land values soared as people realized the potential of this charm-ing town. The next significant rise in popula-tion occurred between 1940 and 1960 as more residents began to commute into New York. Today, Greenwich is a well-established, professional and residential community within easy reach of New York City. The town prides itself on its natural beauty, highlighted by breathtaking coastline and pastoral woodlands, as well as its excellent facilities ranging from elegant country golf courses to local yacht clubs. All new development is carefully controlled to ensure that it comple-ments this delightful town.
