Greenup County Public Libraries

Memories of storming beaches, wading through

swamps and just an ordinary day in the Army are

included in the oral histories of twelve veterans.

Those histories were presented to the Greenup

County Public Library recently. The histories

were gathered as part of a pilot project to collect

the memories of the men and women serving in

the Armed Forces. Greenup and Jefferson coun-

ties were selected as the first counties to partici-

pate in the project, which is a spinoff of the Veter-

ans History Project.

Local volunteers interviewed and recorded the

veterans. The recordings will be available in the

Genealogy Room at the Greenup County Public

Library, the state Historical Society and the Li-

brary of Congress.

The late Gailihue “Buck” Hannahs, Army

World War II, gave an interview to a family

member for a class project and his interview was

read for the recordings. Each veteran received a

citation from Representative Tanya Pullin.

The initial recordings are only the start of the

project. Rep. Pullin and County Attorney Mike

Wilson are purchasing a recorder so additional

histories can be documented. Veterans interested

in sharing memories are asked to contact the

Our annual county wide Summer Reading Kick-Off will be on May 13th at the Greenup Christian Church Life Center from 6-8 pm. We are offering a “fast pass” this year so that you can skip the registration line and come early, sign up at your local Greenup County Library branch or the Bookmo-bile by May 11th to receive your “fast pass” and get in at 5:30 instead of 6:00 (no waiting in line). We will have food, games, inflatables, prizes and Greg Goode will be back to face paint again. Also WLGC will be doing a live remote for us again this year. So come and join us again for a night of “free” great family fun!

Thoroughbred Display

Starting on Friday March 19th and Monday March 22nd we will show a movie once a month for the “grown-up” crowd. All the

movies will be rated PG or PG-13 (possibly R), and they will be comedy, action and adventure movies. We are looking for a

catchy name for the Monday and Friday night movies, if you have a suggestion please give it to us, if we use yours, you will re-

ceive a free DVD. Contest will end April 1st, if you have any questions call the Flatwoods Branch and ask for Vicki or Lindsay or

call the Greenup Library and ask for Denise.

As always the movies are free to the public. Everyone gets their first

snacks free but any refills are a small charge. Also due to release

dates the movie may change so contact the library before you go to

be sure they are showing the movie that is advertised for that day.

2009 was a very active year for the Greenup County Public Libraries Genealogy Department. Here are some of the high-lights.

Volunteer Elwood Tackett has scanned 13,000 pages of family and local history material to digital format for preser-vation.

A donation of approximately 50,000 death certificates (1911-1989) from a funeral home have been alphabetized, indexed, and a master index compiled for patron use.

Daily newspaper obituaries are collected and recorded by volunteers Carl Barker and Janice Miller.

The first phase of veteran oral history interviews is finished and CDs are available. We will begin the second phase as soon as a new recorder has been purchased.

The Family History Collection has added 10 new family books. We invite visitors and patrons to visit our Family His-tory Room to begin their family’s history or to share their family’s history and stories.

The Greenup County Genealogy and Historical Society will host their first Genealogy Conference at Greenbo March 26-27. For more information and registration, Google greenupgenealogy.org. They will have six speakers and seven vendor tables.

“Keep in mind” Genealogy Volunteers are at the Greenup County Public Library each Saturday 10:00 to 2:00 with a Be-ginner’s Workshop on the last Saturday of each month.

GENEALOGY DEPARTMENT,

Looking for something free to do with your family. Well we have the answer for you at the Flatwoods Branch Library.

Family Fun Night in March will be a week earlier this month as we celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday on March 4th at 6:30. We will

be reading some favorite Dr. Seuss books, watching a movie, Dr. Seuss B-I-N-G-O and of course eating Green Eggs & Ham and

birthday cake! We do have a sign-up sheet for this fun night, but there is not a limit. Sign up until March 2nd at 8:00pm, no

late sign-ups please, we will need time to prepare. Call the library to sign up or for more info.

April’s Family Fun Night will be a week earlier, April 1st, also so that we can decorate Easter Eggs again this year, last year

was so much fun that we decided to do it again this year! We will have the sign-up sheet ready after the March Family Fun

Night and sign-up is required. We have a limit of 15 families for this night and the deadline to register will be March 30th. We

will read some Easter stories and each family will decorate a dozen eggs to take home at the end of the evening, refreshments

will be served. Call the library to sign up or for more info. Family Fun Night in May will be the Summer Reading Kick-Off.

Sharyn lives and writes in the Blue Ridge area of Virginia

and is writer-in-residence at King College (TN.) and Shep-

herd College (WV). She will also be signing books. Don’t

miss this opportunity to meet and greet a popular author.

We are pleased to announce that on April 17th at

11:00, the nationally known mystery writer Sharyn

McCrumb will be at the Flatwoods Branch, giving a

talk on Appalachian culture. She has written over 20

novels, most notably the Appalachian Ballad series.

She has been cited for “Outstanding Contribution to

Appalachian Literature” and phrases used to describe

“I’ve always thought saints must be like that,” Knight recalls a friend telling him, and Sarah adds, “Never knew the

worth of him until he died.” - Quote from Sharyn McCrumb’s novel “St. Dale”.

It’s that time once again to do those dreaded taxes. If you are confused about what to file or you want someone to do them for you

then we have the answer for you. The AARP is offering free federal and state tax preparation assistance for those that need it. The

free tax preparation is now underway and will continue through April 15th.

If you wish to use this service they will be at the following locations. In the city of Flatwoods they will be at the Flatwoods City

Building on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 2pm and Mondays at the Flatwoods Branch from 10 am to 3 pm. They will

also be at the other branches of the Greenup County Library System on the following days: Greenup Library on Mondays and Tues-

days from 9 am to 2 pm, and at the McKell Branch from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm on Wednesdays.

If you are in need of just tax forms they are available at each location. State tax forms can be printed from the internet and you can

request that they be sent to you in the mail. The website to get Kentucky State Tax forms is http://revenue.ky.gov/forms/.

THOROUGHBRED DISPLAY AT THE FLATWOODS BRANCH KET will premier their latest high-definition production “Thoroughbred” March 8 at 8:00pm. Di-rected by Academy Award winning filmmaker Paul Wagner, “Thoroughbred” captures the beauty of the breed, meets the people whose lives revolve around the animal, and its history and tradition.

Visit the library display and sign up to win a limited edition “Thoroughbred” poster. Pickup informa-tion on the movie and on the other great KET programming.

MCKELL BOOK CLUB The McKell Branch Library book club continues to meet on the third Thursday from 11:00 to 12:00pm. The March book club selection is “Light on Snow” by Anita Shreve. The April tentative book selection “Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven” by Fannie Flagg. The May selection had not been scheduled.

LIBRARY INFORMATION

All of the libraries are closed on Sunday. The libraries will be closed on Monday May 31st for Memorial Day.

The Greenup County Public Library System is the best value for your money during these hard economic times. Read the latest best sellers in large print, regular print, or audio CD’s. You can also check out movies or place a hold for a book on our website or call one of the library locations to place a hold. A call to the patron will be placed to inform them of the arrived hold. Each location in the system, except for the bookmo-bile, has public access computers. You must have your library card with you to be able to check items out or to use the computers. Wi-Fi (wireless internet) is also available. Anyone needing internet service can stop by the library. These services are all FREE!!

The libraries also have a notary, color copier and faxing services. These are offered for a small fee. If you have any questions about these services please contact your local library.

There are community meeting rooms available by reservation at all locations for clubs and organizations but not for private parties.

Cancellations and Schedules Changes: due to the inclement weather some programs and meetings have been cancelled or postponed. So please check with your local library to see if the meeting you are interested in is still meeting.

30TH ANNIVERSARY OF “ THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK”

The Kentucky Star Wars Collectors Club will host the 30th Anniversary of “The Empire Strikes Back” on May 8th at the Flatwoods Branch Library. There will be a costume contest for the kids, build your own lightsabers and a Star Wars Scavenger hunt. Collectibles will be displayed and we will finish up the day showing “The Empire Strikes Back” with free refreshments. All the fun will begin at 12:00. May the Force be with you.
