From the four public gardens, each with its unique character, to the garden events and numerous sponsored programs, Greensboro Beautiful continues to pursue its mission as “A volunteer organization working to conserve and enhance the beauty and ecology of our community through public and private cooperation.” As we complete our 46th year, I trust you will be pleased and impressed with all that has been accomplished during the past year and will enjoy the contributions to the quality of life that Greensboro Beautiful continues to offer to the Greensboro community. With my term as Chair having ended on July 31st, it is timely that I acknowledge and thank the many people who have contributed to the many successes of the past two years: to committee members and committee chairs whose work is at the heart of what we’ve accomplished; to the thousands of volunteers who contributed thousands of hours to Greensboro Beautiful projects and programs; to our gardens’ staff, whose pride in their work is very much in evidence to anyone visiting the gardens; to the many individual and corporate contributors, whose generous gifts provided the funds to make our programs possible; and lastly to our devoted office staff who have been of unending help to all of us - to all, my warmest and sincerest thanks! 2013-14 YEAR IN REVIEW Thanks to you and the support of thousands of individuals, businesses, and community organizations, our mission to conserve and enhance the beauty and ecology of our community through public and private cooperation continues to be fulfilled through work in our four key areas. PUBLIC GARDENS Garden Events Art in the Arboretum Art in the Arboretum was held on October 6th and over 5,500 visitors enjoyed seeing 49 juried artists; entertainment on three stages, Art Quest activities for children, Art Bark, and two food courts. In addition, Greensboro Beautiful unveiled its Alphabet Arch mini- sculpture designed and fabricated by renowned sculptor, Jim Gallucci. This event was sponsored in part by American Express. Groovin' in the Garden Our newest garden event was Groovin' in the Garden – Jazz at Gateway Gardens on May 4th. This event featured jazz performances by 11 different groups on two stages; an instrument “petting zoo”; instrument making using recycled items; and food vendors. This was a collaboration between Greensboro Beautiful, the Greensboro Youth Council, and the Music Center of City Arts. Over 3,300 visitors attended this premier event! This event was sponsored by the Tanger Family Foundation and 88.5 WFDD. These annual events draw thousands of visitors to our gardens on a single Sunday afternoon! And of course, we couldn't present these outstanding events if it weren't for our fabulous P&R Botanical Gardens Staff! Growing The Green Way The free environmental education Series - "Growing the Green Way" continued to be offered at the Extension Service, Bur-Mil Park's Wildlife Education Center, the Arboretum Education Center, and the Edwards Branch Library. This program is sponsored by the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department, Greensboro Beautiful, and the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Guilford County. Gateway Gardens Gateway Gardens, our fourth public garden and largest single project in our 46 year history, continued to be developed with landscaping, irrigation, building signage, and patio furniture installed at the Visitor Center. The first phase of the Visitor Center includes public restrooms, a vending area, a covered porch, outdoor reception patio, reception lobby, and staff office. The exterior shell of the second phase of the building is included, but is not finished inside, until funding is secured. The second phase of construction will include a main lobby, caterer's kitchen, multi-purpose room, and storage. From the four public gardens, each with its unique character, to the garden events and numeroussponsored programs, Greensboro Beautiful continues to pursue its mission as “A volunteer organization working to conserve and enhance the beauty and ecology of our community through public and private cooperation.” As we complete our 46th year, I trust you will be pleased and impressed with all that has been accomplished during the past year and will enjoy the contributions to the quality of life that Greensboro Beautiful continues to offer to the Greensboro community.

2Greensboro Beautiful and the City of Greensboro are proud to announce that the new Gateway Gardens Visitor Center located a 2924 E. Lee Street has been recently certified as a LEED Silver project by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. Within each of the credit categories, there are specific prerequisites projects must satisfy and a variety of credits projects can pursue to earn points. The number of points the project earns determines its level of LEED certification. There are four levels of certification -Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The number of points a project earns determines the level of LEED certification that the project receives.

Bog Garden at Benjamin ParkIn the Bog, we installed a plaque at the Teaching Circle; continued removal of invasive plants; and conducted an assessment of the sedimentation problem in the lake with City Water Resources staff.

Greensboro ArboretumAt the Greensboro Arboretum, we completely renovated the Ashland Drive Entrance, with the assistance of numerous in-kind contributions from local business partners. Steve Windham orchestrated the design and construction of this project; and the crowning jewel is the custom designed archway, created by Jim Gallucci. A thank you luncheon for project contributors was held in May. The “Right Plant, Right Place Collection” was developed and installed in cooperation with Duke Energy. This area showcases plants that should be used under power lines. A sign was developed to provide educational information, with a QR code link to the GBI website for additional information. We completed design for renovation of the Groundcover Collection/Chimes area; and implementation will begin in this fiscal year. Enhancement plantings were installed in the Butterfly Garden, Sequence of Bloom and Conifer Collections, Shade Garden, Bouquet Garden, and Perennial Border. The J. Wesley Van Dorn Memorial Woodland Classroom was designed and a $10,000 gift from the family was received. Construction is now underway.

Tanger Family Bicentennial GardenIn the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden, more plants were added on the Wildflower Trail and an interpretive sign was developed and installed. The Rock Garden was completely renovated, and the Camellia and Azalea area was given a facelift as well.

URBAN FORESTRYNEIGHBORWOODS

In the Urban Forestry program area, we continued and expanded our NeighborWoods Community tree plantings. Saturday, November 2nd dawned clear and mild as dozens of Greensboro Beautiful volunteers donned gloves and shovels to plant trees in the Holts Chapel Road area. Trees were planted in both the Poplar Ridge and Fox Trail

neighborhoods. This year's NeighborWoods Community Tree Planting was a tremendous success thanks to a generous grant from UPS and the support of the City of Greensboro's Planning & Community Development, Field Operations, and Parks & Recreation Departments; and the Guilford County Master Gardeners. This was the 11th year that Greensboro Beautiful's Urban Forestry Committee has planned and implemented the NeighborWoods program, designed to restore the tree canopy in our community.

NEIGHBORWOODS RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE PILOT PROGRAM

To further expand our tree planting efforts, Greensboro Beautiful and the City created the new NeighborWoods “Right Plant, Right Place” pilot program. The kick-off was held at the Arbor Day celebration on March 22nd at Blandwood Mansion. Following Mayor Nancy Vaughan's Arbor Day proclamation and a commemorative planting of a 10-foot Norway Spruce, the “Right Plant, Right Place” pilot program for the Westerwood and Southside neighborhoods was unveiled. This program is designed to help residents plant trees on public rights of way where trees have been removed as part of Duke Energy's ongoing vegetation management work, and where they are needed on public property. The tree planting was held on April 12th in each of the neighborhoods. 198 volunteers planted 103 trees in just a couple of hours.

MEMORIAL HONOR TREE PROGRAMGreensboro Beautiful's Memorial and Honor Tree Program continues to offer citizens the opportunity to plant a tree to honor and remember special occasions and loved ones.

CLEAN COMMUNITYBIG SWEEP

In the Clean Community program area, Big Sweep was held on September 21st as our fall community waterway cleanup. 700 volunteers collected nearly 2 tons of trash, tires, mattresses, metal debris, and recyclables! Big Sweep was sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Greensboro with support from the Greensboro Field Operations Department.

GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUPThe Great American Cleanup was held on April 5th. 677 volunteers collected 1.5 tons of litter and debris. The spring cleanup was sponsored by the Greensboro Regional Realtors' Association with support from the Greensboro Field Operations Department. We also conducted the Community Appearance Index; which includes a visual assessment of litter in all City Council Districts. This assessment is used to identify problem areas where cleanup is needed.

MED TOSSOn October 26th, Greensboro held its fourth annual Med Toss Safe Medicine Disposal program at area Walgreens and other locations. Greensboro Beautiful helped to

COMMUNITY LANDSCAPINGNEIGHBORHOOD INITIATIVE GRANTS PROGRAM

The Community Landscaping area offered the Neighborhood Initiative Grants Program providing funding assistance to neighborhoods for beautification and ecology projects that enhance and/or restore city property. The 2013 grant was awarded to the Cone Health Cancer Center Healing Garden project for the Wendover Avenue Treescape. 62 trees were planted along Wendover near the Lake Daniel Greenway.

We provided new promotional kiosks and a tent at public events; continued to produce our newsletter, “The Seed”; and designed and printed a new organizational and Memorial/Honor Tree program brochure. We continued to maintain and update our website; distributed regular email blasts; and maintained our Facebook and Twitter pages. Our Speaker's Bureau conducted programs for a number of civic organizations and we offered Garden Tours to numerous groups and clubs from all over the state. We hope you'll visit us regularly at www.GreensboroBeautiful.org to see what’s new and upcoming.
