As we approach the midpoint of this year, I thought it would be appropriate and helpful to share where we are with regard to the Board’s strategic objectives for 2015 which centered on Governance, Strategic Planning, Membership and Financial Sustainability. There is a tremendous amount of positive energy and work in process engaging the Board, our committees and our staff on a wide range of programs to ensure the long-term health and vitality of our Club. Some of these programs are highly visible, such as the refurbishment of our golf courses from brutal winter conditions, but many other parts of our work are not as tangible.

Club GovernanceFor example, at the beginning of the year, the Board set out to realign the Club’s gover-nance structure, develop an updated three-year strategic plan and reexamine our mission statement. With the hiring of Steve Matlaga as our General Manager and Chief Operating Officer several years ago, the Club began the transition from a committee operating model that relied on significant member leadership and involve-ment in day to day activities to a centralized model that relies on the COO to run day-to-day operations with the Board providing over-sight, and focsing on policy and and strategic direction. We have made significant progress in this transition, and earlier this year the Board unanimously approved changes creating charters for all Board committees, the addition of Gover-nance and Compensation committees and other modifications in our governance structure that will help ensure a seamless transition in Board leadership from year to year.

Strategic PlanningIn March, the Board, along with five of our past Presidents, engaged in an all-day retreat to discuss the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing our Club, and to kick off the Strategic Planning process. With thoughtful input from many members, we adopted the following mission statement, vision and core values:

MissionTo be the premier Country Club in the Triad by providing a full range of outstanding dining,

recreational and social opportunities for our members, their Families and Guests in exceptional settings at both the Irving Park and Farm campuses.

VisionGreensboro Country Club will be a welcoming, respectful and inclusive Community of family and friends enjoying a wide range of events and activities in gracious, exceptional settings.

Core ValuesGreensboro Country Club is committed to• Excellence• Respectful and Welcoming Environment• Responsible Governance• Financial Sustainability• Open and Transparent Communication

We intend to use these statements as our guide in developing our updated Strategic Plan as well as the shaping of our Master Plan. As a reminder, the Master Plan is being developed using the extensive input from our membership survey, recommendations from the Long-Range Strategic Planning Committee and other committees at the Club as well as the expertise of industry-leading consultants we engaged to support us in this process. We are on track with our timetable to bring plans and options to the membership later this winter.

Club MembershipMaintaining a strong and vibrant membership is only possible because of the extraordinary volunteer efforts of the Membership Committee as well as our other Club committees and the many members who sponsor new members. As of mid-June, we have brought in 30 new members includ-ing seven reinstatements this year. Our objective is to have a year with positive net member-ship growth, and this can be achieved with your support. To reflect the increased value of the Club from numerous improvements that have been made in recent years, the Board increased the initiation fee to $30,000 effective May 1st. New members contribute to the financial sustainability of our Club and allow us to fund much needed capital improvements.

It is essential that you, as a member and ambassador of our Club, continue to help promote membership to your friends, neighbors and business associates. To ensure that the second half of 2015 is as strong as the first half of the year, the Board has approved a special program from June 1st through December 31st. Any member who sponsors a new member in this time period will receive a dues credit (equal to the value of the new member’s dues) for three months. Please contact Membership Director Brittany Mitchell at [email protected] for details about this program or to sponsor a new member.

Financial StrengthI am also pleased to report that the financial health of our Club is quite strong. This is largely due to the wise leadership of our previous and current boards along with our fiscally responsible COO/GM, his leadership team and staff. The current operating forecast for the Club is ahead of budget, capital expenditures are on budget and we continue to focus on controlling expenses and exercising financial discipline while creating positive experiences for you.

That said, we will make the investments that need to be made. As I referenced earlier, both of our golf courses experienced significant winter kill that damaged the courses. The repair estimate is approximately $150,000. This cost will be treated as a one-time expense outside of the operating budget, with every effort being made to mitigate the final cost as much as possible. The best way to help defray the cost of the winter kill remediation is for our members to play more golf for the balance of the year. Cart and guest fees are important revenue sources for the Club and exceeding our budget on both fronts will certainly help reduce the financial impact of the repairs.

Moving forward, the Board remains committed to executing our vision without sacrificing the quality and standards that define our Club.

Welcome, summer! We are busy, busy, busy and very thankful to be so! We deeply appreciate you making the Club part of your plans. In June we had increased pool, youth and private event activity and the Donald Ross Terrace is in full swing with members enjoying this great outdoor venue. I am hopeful that our communications (please make sure you are signed up for Club e-mails, Facebook and Instagram) convey the energy and passion the team has for driving creative new events and options for you and your family to enjoy throughout the year. It was our pleasure to see the record participation at the cardboard boat regatta, glow golf campout and most recently “The Whole World is a Doughnut.” As you look through this newsletter we hope the smiles we captured at those events take you back to the fun and inspires you to register for upcoming “new” events such as Yappy Hour, The Donald Ross Terrace Pizza Experience, All Sports Camp and more. Please do not hesitate to contact me or other staff if you have any great event or activity ideas, as we are always striving to bring you new and innovative events! Also, be sure to participate in our “Summer Photo Contest” on Facebook. Show us how you have fun around the Club and you just may win a complimentary dinner at the Club! As our President Gail Bernstein summarized, the Club is in a positive operational position and we will continue to focus on member participation growth with responsible fiscal management. The staff and I have implemented some new systems that will modernize some of our processes and will make us more efficient. We remain focused on providing quality venues, activities and services in a welcoming and friendly environ-ment while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

In concert with the Board, who worked very hard on a new Mission, Vision and Core Value statements, the Senior leadership team and I are now working on updating our “Operational Mission and Vision” statements to consistently deliver the Mission of GCC at a high level. Our daily mission continues to be to make you and your family fans of our Club so you frequent the Club consis-tently, have positive experiences and in turn have the confidence to bring guests and sponsor new members. Thank you to all the members who recently sponsored new members and congratulations to all of our new members on joining the GCC family. As a result of your efforts, GCC is trending towards a positive membership “net” this year, so we hope that you consider sponsoring new members as outlined in our new Membership Incentive Program. July brings positive exposure for our Club in the community at large as we host the “101st Carolina Amateur Championship” at the Farm Course (July 9th - 12th). During that same time frame, our Blue Dolphins will be competing in City Meet (July 9th - 11th) chasing not only a City Swim Championship, but also striving to make history for Swim for Cancer. The Blue Dolphins and our generous GCC Members and staff have worked hard this year in hopes of reaching a 27-year total donation to the American Cancer Society of $1 million. Stay tuned - this is going to be a great summer!

From the ChefWe hope you’re enjoying the summer as much as we are. We have been very active around the Club with youth activities, multiple weddings, golf events and

tournaments, tennis socials and a la carte dining. We are off and running at the Donald Ross Terrace as we head into Independence Day weekend and we look forward to providing a July 4th celebration by the pool this year.

We are continuing are efforts on keeping the menus fresh and exciting while utilizing local farms and agriculture whenever possible. Chef Alex and I make weekly trips to the Farmer’s Market and plan a farmer’s basket menu weekly in the Sunset Room. We are featuring small and large plates so there will be something for everyone. You can sample multiple small plates or settle on one large plate. Don’t forget to try one of Chef Ben’s wonderful seasonal pastries. We are also featuring dessert soufflés in the Sunset Room on Friday nights in July.

We are offering three interactive cooking class opportunities for the Membership over the next two months. Learn to utilize our brick oven at the Donald Ross Terrace to make, shape and bake homemade pizzas on July 15th. We will also work with whole wheat and gluten-free recipes. A farmers' table class called "Seasonal Creations" is being offered on July 22nd. We will buy fresh local ingredients and we will split up into groups with my sous chefs and myself to go through the brainstorming process of engineering a multi-course event on the fly. Both of these classes are hands on and include wines to match the theme. A fun-spirited cookie decorating challenge with mothers and son teams is scheduled for August 26th. We will give you jumbo GCC sugar cookies which you will decorate to outshine all the other mother and son teams in the challenge. We will then display them for

judging by your peers. Awards will be announced fol-lowing with plenty of milk and fresh cookies. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Tom CascaranoInducted into USPTA Hall of Fame

After 38 years of service to the tennis community, Tom Cascarano, GCC’s Director of Tennis, was inducted into the USPTA Southern Division Hall of Fame on Sunday, May 16th. Tom has been with GCC for 23 years, continually growing and improving the Club’s tennis program.

"Being part of the Tennis Professional Hall of Fame is a

complete joy. I am humbled and honored to receive this prestigious award,” said Tom. “To be involved with such an elite group of tennis professionals is truly special. I am in this profession because of the passion I have for tennis and the ability to touch members' lives."

The United States Professional Tennis Association is a growing group of tennis-teaching professionals and coaches that promotes a greater awareness of the sport. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, a tennis professional must have an extensive resume of accomplishments and time serving the USPTA.

Steve Matlaga said, “We could not be more proud of Tom’s induction into the USPTA Southern Division Hall of Fame. He has been an invaluable asset to our Tennis program. His passion for the game, the Club and our Members has created a tennis program that is truly ‘Best in Class’. His induction further exemplifies the extraordinary talent that the Members have available to them at our Club, and we are honored that Tom has made GCC his second home for 23 years.”

Thursday Stag night kicks off the festivities with the team flighting. Also, a new event has been added to the program this year - a Friday afternoon two-man team event at the Irving Park course that begins at 5:00 p.m.

The Annual Parent-Child Championship will be played on Saturday, July 18th at the Farm course. The format will be a two-person team with a parent-child combination. Competition is gross and net overall and gross and net within the age groups of the junior golfer with 50% of the parent’s handicap.

Be sure to sign up for the Ladies and Men’s Club Championship. Ladies play Irving Park and the Farm, Friday, August 28th and Saturday, August 29th, in a stroke play scoring individual stroke play competition with flights accommodating all levels of players with established handicaps. The Men’s Club Championship is August 29th & 30th and plays the opposite sequence of Irving Park and the Farm. The format is scoring of individual stroke play with flights. The Championship will be 54 holes starting Friday, August 28th. All other flights will be 36 holes conducted on Saturday and Sunday with handicap and net scores. Entry fee includes refreshments for the weekend, team prizes and feature prizes. This is a tournament package event.

Save the date for our Folds of Honor Fundraiser on September 2nd. This is an event to provide financial assistance to spouses and children of soldiers defending our country’s freedom.

Tournament Results2015 Generation Gap TournamentThis new event was well attended and turned out to be a lot of fun. The teams consisted of one of our outstanding junior golfers paired with an adult who was not a relative in a shamble format at the Farm course.

Topping the teams were Stanhope Johnson (a recent junior in our programs) and Ben Rightsell who posted a low gross score of 64 for a tie with Mike Murray Jr. and Thomas Mayes. A tiebreaker was a chip-off between the two juniors and Ben Rightsell executed a deft pitch to snare the winners trophy.

In the net division, Bob Hudson and Andrew Plate tied at net 64 with Scott Neff and Dawson McAlhaney. Dawson represented the team for the chip-off and produced a solid chip to within eight feet to a difficult hole position for his team to win the champion trophy.

2015 Couples Member-Guest Brad and Margaret Penn teamed with their guest couple Billy and Leah Price to win low gross honors in the Couples Member-Guest played May 31st. The winning team posted an even par 72 for the first place title. In the net division, Mark and Carol Boles partnered with Jack and Marilyn Whitley to scorch the Farm course with a 12 under par 60 for the title. This is the first Couples Member-Guest for our Club, and based on the positive feedback, watch for more of these events to come!

Tournament ResultsWild, Wild West - Ladies Member-GuestThe Outlaws Had Fun!In the words of Stephen Curtis Chapman, “saddle up your horses, we’ve got a trail to blaze!” This saying took on some new meaning as the Ladies Member-Guest kicked off with our lady pro on horseback riding up the practice range to give the morning “proclamations.” The group enjoyed a great day of golf at the Farm followed by their second sur-prise - line dancing lessons! The ladies were good sports and filled the dance floor! The second day again the popular shamble format was played over the Farm layout.

Handcrafted local pottery was awarded for team prizes and feature prizes. The 2015 Ladies Member-Guest Champions were Laurie Watson, Nicole Johnson, Robin Tosco and Don-na Pratt. Net honors by one shot went to Sunny Lawson, Sally McElwee, Laura Norman and Harriet Long. Our return-ing friend, now as a guest, Mary Bee Petot, joined Buff Perry and hosts Mary Carol Danahy and Sharon Hicks for second net. The posse of Becky Campbell, Lynette Batton, Rosie and Judy Powell were third A memorable event indeed! The Summer of 2015The summer of 2015 looks to be a very busy season for the Golf Course Maintenance team both here and at most of the surrounding courses. Mother Nature has dealt golf courses in our area a bad hand, but in my business, when you play with Mother Nature over a long period of

time a few bad hands are surely to be expected.

Once the extent of the winter kill damage was clearly apparent, plans were quickly made to deal with this issue. The Board of Directors and Manage-ment have once again demonstrated their commitment to the golf program by allocating expenditures above the normal operating budget for a reasonable approach for repairing damage. What we mean by a “reasonable approach” is that repairs will not take place instantly. To implement an expedited repair program would require extremely large funding measures to allow for contractors to be brought on-site and all the repairs to be accomplished via sod. Our plan involves bringing on additional seasonal laborers to do the vast majority of repairs in-house, sodding small areas not conducive to sprigs and sprigging large areas where sod is cost prohibitive. While this plan will take longer to accomplish it is ultimately designed to have an acceptable impact on the Club’s bottom line while taking into consideration the expectations of the membership and the overall playability of our two courses.

We closed down the Irving Park course in June to plant sprigs throughout damaged areas on a large number

of the fairways. Due to a prior agreement with the Carolinas Golf Association, the Club is hosting the 2015 Carolinas Amateur in July. Our sprig date at Irving Park was

scheduled at the earliest possible time to allow for the course to be re-opened when the Farm course is shut down for the tournament. While this short period will not be near what is needed to show improvement in some areas, it should be enough time to begin drying these areas out so that they are traversable.

The driving range and chipping fairway at the Farm will also be closed down for similar sprigging repairs on the Monday following the Carolinas Amateur (July 13th). We would expect this area to be closed for a similar three to four week period while we try and establish the new Bermudagrass. All the areas at both the Irving Park course and the Farm range will be sprigged with the newest and most cold hardy variety of Bermudagrass, which goes by the name of Latitude 36. This grass has been in the marketplace for several years and performed better than 419 Bermuda this past winter at courses as far north as the Mid-Atlantic.

While the winter kill of 2014-15 will dominate much of the discussion this year and it will be a measuring point for how well superintendents can turn around their properties, it will be important not to lose focus on all the other day-to-day work that will be required of the team to make sure the course is in the best possible condition despite all the repair work that will be going on. We sincerely thank all of the members for their patience while we are making repairs to the courses and experience closures from time-to-time. The recovery of the course, the safety issues and overall experience of the members will be worth it once we are finished.

Fitness Update

The summer season has officially arrived and because our members love the great outdoors this time of year, GCC Fitness has headed outdoors with Aqua Fitness, Couples Boot Camp and Fitness Events Training!

Aqua Fitness is a low-impact class, however, don’t let that fool you. In Aqua Fit you can get an intense work-out or slow down to your own pace if you’re a begin-ner or rehabilitating an injury.

Want to spend some quality time with your significant other? Ask them out on a date to one of three summer fitness series date night! Afterwards you can enjoy craft beer and pizza from GCC’s very own brick oven. Don’t worry about the calories, you will certainly burn plenty of them in the Date Night Boot Camp.

The new trend in fitness is endurance run events loaded with obstacles, inflatables and mud. Some runs include being drenched with a color substance throughout the race. These races are fun, can be laid back or challeng-ing as well as team-oriented. Join our GCC trainers and let them get you ready for your first, or next, fitness event!

From the Pool DeckCan you believe July is already here? Many thanks to all the kids and parents who came out Memorial Day Weekend, and participated in our 3rd Annual Card-board Boat Regatta. In case you missed it, the “SS Trainor,” crewed by Lily Jones and Caroline Garrison, blew away the competition with a winning time of 21.81 seconds! This was by far our biggest race, with 18 cardboard boats and a total of 50 crew members. We had teams that were all about team spirit, matching uniforms and theme boats. Of course we had several boats that could not quite make it across the pool, but “Candy Canoe” powered by Anne Kaplan and Reagan Neff took home the “Titanic” award for the most spectacular sinking. Their boat sunk immediately to the bottom of the pool before they ever shoved off. We hope to see even more duct tape, bigger and crazier designs, and outrageous costumes in 2016.

Looking ahead to the last few months of the season, we hope for continued safety and success at both pools.

Swim LessonsWhether you're learning to swim or perfecting your racing skills, GCC can help with private swim lessons. Private lessons are customized for each swimmer depending on their skill level (beginner – advanced). 30-Minute Class | $25 per Lesson or $80 for Four Lessons

GCC also offers semi-private lessons. Semi-private lessons are designed for two swimmers and are ideal for siblings or friends of equivalent skill level. 30-Minute Class | $40 per lesson ($20 per swimmer)

The Blue Dolphin FamilyThe GCC Blue Dolphins are in the midst of another exciting swim team season under new Head Coach Katie McNerney. Coach Katie has had a positive experience as head coach, and would like to thank our families and swimmers for helping make the transition an easy one. Throughout the season, our swim team family has come together to face the competitive challenges of the sport, and embrace the camaraderie of all the swimmers and parents that come together to carry on the Blue Dolphin tradition. Coach Katie has been welcomed into the Blue Dolphin Family, and as a team, we will continue to strive for success both in and out of the water, create positive experiences, better ourselves as swimmers, and build bonds with fellow teammates that will last a lifetime.

Championship TimeThe Blue Dolphins are preparing for another City Meet Championship on July 9th, 10th and 11th which will be held at the venerable Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Blue Dolphin family will bring a phenomenal season to a close, and once again give performances in the pool that are worthy of any championship final. Blue Dolphins, this is our season, let’s have fun and make it the best yet!

Immediately following the closing ceremonies on the final day of City Meet Championships, all Blue Dolphin swim-mers and families are invited to the Irving Park Pool for our traditional Blue Dolphin Championship Night Swim! The pool will be open to Blue Dolphin Swimmers only starting at 8:00 p.m. All coaches will be on deck to celebrate our season, with food, fun, night swimming and much more!

Support Your GCC Blue DolphinsAs we wrap up a successful fundraising campaign, please continue to support our Blue Dolphin’s in their efforts to reach the one million dollar mark, in total money raised for the American Cancer Society’s Swim for Cancer fundraiser.
