Greenisland Stakeholder

Advisory Panel has been

meeting regularly over the

last 2 years preparing for

the replacement of the

Greenisland Residential

Home with a new

supported living scheme.

Trinity Housing Association

has been appointed to

develop the new supported living

accommodation on the Greenisland Home site.

Members of the Group met with Trinity Housing

Association in March 2013 and shared views on

the principles that must support the development

of the new services, in particular taking on board

the views of older people, their family, carers

and friends. Trinity Housing Association has

extensive experience in developing supported

living schemes and are delighted to be taking

forward this work. Funding for the new building

has been provided by the Housing Association

along with funding from the Department of

Social Development (DSD).

Issues now being considered to enable

the build programme

• A site study has identified the parts of the

existing site that can be used for

accommodation and outdoor leisure;

other parts of the site will be used as car

parking and for utilities.

• Given the location on the shore of Belfast

Lough, the risk of flooding has to be

considered as areas that can flood

cannot be used for accommodation.

• Supported Living, what does this mean?

In the new purpose built accommodation,

housing support and care tasks will be

provided by Care & Support Workers, as

well as assessed Personal Care needs

being provided to individuals.

• The Supported Living scheme will

provide individual accommodation for 36

people as well as shared facilities for use

by all tenants. The design team will make

best use of the location by maximising

views of the sea and landscaping.

• An architect leads the design team,

including mechanical and electrical

engineers.

• Regulation Quality Improvement

Authority (RQIA) will be involved in

approving the new scheme.

• A site feasibility and asbestos study will

all be part of the planning process as will

a study of the terrain and surface

features before any construction would

commence.

It has been vitally important to work closely

with each individual resident of Greenisland

Home, considering their needs and best

interests when moving from the Home as we

prepare for the new building. Great sensitivity

has been called upon when considering

individual needs and maintaining close

friendships, as well as ensuring continuity of

care. All efforts have been made to support

small groups of friends to move together, and

this has been facilitated by preparing a group

of places in other Homes that are close by,

such as Joymount Residential Home in

Carrickfergus. All residents have now moved

to alternative accommodation, and the Trust is

now in the process of redeploying staff.

Residents will have the choice to move back

into the new building when it is ready, if it best

suits their needs at that time. The new

Supported Living accommodation will provide

both care and support to those older people

who live there. The Greenisland Stakeholder

Advisory Panel, and others that they will

engage with, will continue to be involved in the

process along with residents and staff.

Meetings will continue to be held with

Greenisland staff and families.

Steps in the Process

March / April 2013 - Informal discussion with Planners (Pre

Planning Application Discussion) - Prepare and submit preplanning

application - Mini competition process to respond to a

Design Brief – seeking innovative design to make optimum use of the site

June 2013 - Select design Team – consider issues

including quality, staff views on how the building will function and be used to make best flows and connections, views of Stakeholders including older people and families

August 2013 - Submit Planning Application

October 2013 - Tender for the new building and services

on the site launched

December 2013 - Appointment of Builder Building to start on site before 31 March 2014

Considering the needs

of Residents
