The event, hosted by the Grow Greenbushes group enables local people to celebrate Australia Day without travelling out of town. Some of the contingent left early to attend the Shire of Bridge-town Greenbushes breakfast at Bridgetown Showgrounds where the 2018 awards were presented.

The year is off to a flying start already! It was great to see so many people attend our Australia Day BBQ breakfast.

A very big thank you to all the volunteers who helped set up, prepare, cook and pack up. Many hands make light work.

Thanks also to the fabulous Retrosonic for providing music for the day.

Congratulations to the members of the Grow Greenbushes Tidy Towns Committee for being awarded the Australia Day Community Group Award.

This is fitting recognition of a Committee which has worked tirelessly over 20+ years on all sorts of projects to make Greenbushes great! So to anyone who has been on that Committee past or present, or helped the Committee with projects – thank you. If you would like to be involved in any of our 2018 projects make sure you come along to our first meeting on Thursday 1

st February in the Road Board Building.

The Tidy Towns Committee meet at 6.30pm followed by Grow Greenbushes at 7.30pm. We love new ideas and suggestions and all are welcome. The Greenbushes Community Garden through Grow Greenbushes and the able assistance of Debbie Walsh have been successful in obtaining a grant from CANWA.

We are very excited that CANWA chose to fund our “Meet, Smile, Create” project and I would like to thank them in advance as this is yet another project which will see our town enhanced.

This project will bring Mike Barker, a renown graffiti artist, to town to conduct some community based workshops using spray cans to create artwork, developing themes around “belonging in Greenbushes”.

The project will culminate in a mural on the white, north facing wall of the Community Garden.

If you would like to join in the fun please contact the Community Garden Coordinator, Tracy Lansdell.

To everyone who has volunteered on Greenbushes projects.

To Tommy Turtle for collecting lots of camper’s donations! Thanks again to Mick Latimer for his creation and MSP Engineering for his installation.

Greenbushes Primary School opened its doors for 2018 with a new Principal.

Kay Kuzich, who has spent the past 10 years at the helm of the Kirup Primary School, is excited at the prospect of taking over the top job at Greenbushes and is looking forward to working with staff and the community to develop programmes to benefit students.

Mrs Kuzich says she has a special interest in raising students’ literacy and plans to cater for the differing needs of individual students.

She will be supported by Anne Giblett (Year 1-3 Teacher), Deb Penney (Year 4-6 teacher), Krystal Kraichoo & Vicki Woods (Kindy/Pre-Primary), Sue Pember (Special Needs/Education Assistant), Barb Hatswell (Education Assistant/Library Officer), Louise Rodgers (Manager Corporate Services), Natalie Aldridge (School Officer), Andrea Barker (Gardener), Peta McGhie (Gardener), Yuko Tonai-Moore (LOTE), Louise Hodge (Music), Fiona Willis (Art), Leonie Armstrong (School Chaplain) & Liz Bennett (Cleaner).

The Art programme with teacher Fiona Willis, which commenced with the junior students in 2017, will be extended to include senior students in 2018, thanks to funding from Talison Lithium, McSweeney Partners Engineering, SG Mining and Global Advanced Metals.

During her first week at the school Mrs Kuzich invited members of the school community and community groups to attend a welcome morning tea and workshop session to help develop ideas for the coming year.

Friday afternoons will be set aside for special projects including working on sustainability studies at the Bush Block and Community Garden and projects to broaden students’ skills across a range of disciplines and to promote links with the community.

Save our Camp Schools

Many thanks to the hundreds of people who wrote to the Min-ister for Education (cc’d to me) regarding the announced cuts to education, particularly the School of the Air, residential col-leges, programs for the gifted and talented, and school camps.

It has been an outstanding response and the Government back-flip shows the power of communities pulling together and fighting for what is right. Whilst the School of the Air has been saved, we still need to fight for the regional school camps - particularly Bridgetown and Pemberton in the Warren-Blackwood.

Not only do these camps provide strong educational outcomes for approximately 1800-2000 students each year, they also create employment and support local businesses through the purchase of food, products and other services.

Hands off Agricultural Trust funds

The McGowan Labor Government is still intent on annually raiding 20 percent of funds from the Agricultural Education Farm Provisions Trust. These funds, generated by the Agricultural Colleges are used to purchase farm machinery, pay for licensing, fencing and other farm developments.

This action will impact the operations of the Denmark Agricul-tural College and limit support for agricultural education pro-grams at Mt Barker, Manjimup and Margaret River.

Country people have had a partial win, but we need to sustain the pressure to ensure quality educational opportunities remain in our regional areas.

Changes to HACC

A few people have contacted my office concerned about HACC services (Home and Community Care) finishing in mid 2018.

My initial enquiries have assured me there will not be a reduc-tion in services, as home care services are transitioned from State to Federal responsibility. The replacement program will be known as Commonwealth Home Support Program for peo-ple over the age of 65 years. Adding to the confusion is the rolling out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which will cater for younger people and those with disabilities.

It is my understanding more information will be provided over the next few months, there will be no change to the level of care provided to existing clients and the State will fill any gaps. I will continue to monitor this issue to ensure our seniors, and those living with a disability, are able to safely and comfortably remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

Pat’s Patch...Cr Pat Scallan MINE NEWS with Steve Green

First of all a happy Australia Day to those I missed on the day.

We had a great turnout at the Greenbushes breakfast with more than 160 people attending and we were blessed with great weather and good food.

Thanks to all those who helped with the setting up, cooking and cleaning up. Thanks to the band “Retrosonic” who once again entertained us during the morning.

Also a big thanks to Tony Pratico who donated and cooked the lamb chops to make the breaky even more Australian!

The Tidy Towns committee received a Citizenship award for community group / event from the Shire. Congratulations to you all and anyone wanting to join a great community group that has a pretty good record of achievement this may be the one for you!

Congratulations also to our local youth award recipient Douglas Sumner-McGhie and to Barbara Johnson (Citizen of the Year) and Rita Baldock (Senior Citizen of the Year).

The Shire’s Municipal Heritage Register is currently out for community consultation and if you wish to review or contribute please have a look on the Shire’s website or pop in at the CRC to review the register.

The Shire has decided to close the current informal green waste dumping site and will not provide another location.

The town has managed without one for many years since the town tip closed in 1998 and only in recent times has this unofficial site been used. It is proving to be hard to manage with general rubbish, not just green waste, being dumped in this location from time to time.

The Shire has provided a weekly rubbish truck and once per month this truck collects white goods/green waste over and above the curb side collection for those who find it inconvenient to use the shire tip in Hester.

The costs and time involved in trying to manage a separate green waste facility in Greenbushes is unjustified.

The annual Shire Electors Meeting is scheduled for the 8

th February 2018 at the Council Chambers and all

electors are invited to attend.

Unfortunately the Greenbushes St Barnabas Opportunity Shop has been having a lot of electrical goods left outside the shop. Legally, the Op Shop is not permitted to sell electrical goods and has great difficulty disposing of the items. We thank you for goods left for us, but sadly many of the clothes are dirty, which also means they cannot be sold in this state. Please ensure clothing and other items that are donated are in good condition and clean. Thank You

2018 has commenced with us welcoming a number of new employees.

This included our 2018 trainees and an apprentice as mentioned in last month’s newsletter.

Ian McGuire has joined the team as Project Development Manager to progress future development plans to meet our shareholder requirements.

We also welcomed Paulette Pearce in Reception, Jasmin Eardley Wilmot and Casey Rae as Casual Laboratory staff.

The first stage of the Old Mill Camp is now open and housing 100 construction workers on the CGP2 project. The second stage of the plant is scheduled to come on line with the ramp-up of construction activity over the next few months.

Work is progressing well on the establishment of a new ore feed system for the CGP1 plant. This will enable us to feed material from a contract crushing plant which will be commissioned in March.

GREENBUSHES COMMUNITY SHED

School Holiday Program - January 2018

Our CRC school holiday program this year included a Bus trip to Gravity, thanks to a community service agreement provided by the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes and help from local volunteers. The children enjoyed a morning filled with bouncing on trampolines, playing trampoline dodge (favoured by the boys), challenging partners on balance beams, then struggling out of the foamy pit, trampoline basketball and general acrobatics for those game enough.

After a lunch at Big Swamp Park and a larger than average choice of playground equipment to discover we made our way back to Greenbushes and Bridgetown for drop-offs. Thank you to the volunteers who helped with lunch, supervised, ran around and generally helped deliver a great outcome for the group. Our group eagerly awaiting their 11am start time in the party room at Gravity. Eugenie, Tilly, Lynus, Emily and Edyn all had a fun-filled morning under the tuition of Karen, learning how to mould icing into shapes and putting their imagination to good use in designing and decorating cup cakes which they took home.

Our workshops, sponsored by Greenbushes CWA Belles, are now fully booked. Over the coming months the CRC, in collaboration with the Community Shed, are looking at running some beginner workshops for Men. This will give anyone over the age of 18, the opportunity to come along and learn some of the basic woodworking skills in a casual, friendly atmosphere.

Membership for 2018 will be due at the end of February at a cost of $10 for a social membership and $54 full membership. Please call into the CRC and speak to the staff for additional information or to make a payment.

Over the next few weeks an undercover/storage area will be constructed to help extend the usable area for the shed. See details in our advertisement in this edition.

Members of Narrogin & Williams Men sheds joined some of our committee members for lunch and a look round the shed during January.

FAREWELL After 2 1/2 years as Coordinator of the Greenbushes Community

Resource Centre it is time for a change and I will be saying

farewell to the CRC over the coming weeks.

It has been a busy and challenging time with changes to our

funding, changes in government, requirements for updating our

constitution, updating of policies and procedures and acquiring

grant funding, to mention a few of the many tasks. Then there

are the fun components: Bus trips with the seniors, school

holiday programs, art and craft workshops, information sessions,

croquet and many more events and workshops I have had the

pleasure of being involved with or participating in.

Since commencing at the CRC we now offer a health and

wellness room for hire, thanks to the Shire of Bridgetown-

Greenbushes funding for an examination table. The Greenbushes

Community Shed which included renovation of an old shed at the

rear of the CRC, thanks to the support of Talison Lithium Pty Ltd,

and equipment for the shed thanks to Lotterywest. The CRC has

also, through funding from the South West Development

Commission, produced a computer package aimed at matching

volunteer skills with seniors and those in need, within our

community, to help with small home and garden handyman type

jobs.

I would like to thank the many community groups , Grow

Greenbushes and primary school , with whom I have been involved

and wish them all well with their endeavours.

Thank you to the residents of Greenbushes for welcoming me

into their community and allowing me to be involved in their

many activities; it has been a pleasure and I hope to receive

invitations to future events.

Finally thank you to the friendly and efficient staff and

volunteers at the CRC. You have all been a pleasure to work with

and will be sorely missed.

Please call in to the CRC to say goodbye and introduce yourself to

the new Coordinator.

Since the Shed opening in November last year, I have been asked questions about our Shed which I hope will en-courage YOU to come along, join, participate and be a part of your community and what it has to offer. What is a Men’s Shed? A Men’s shed is established for a variety of reasons; to offer a space where men only may meet, provide a space for activities - which in our case at the moment is a woodwork space, a place to make new friends, socialise or something to be a part of as an alternative activity. What do they do? At present our Shed is designed for woodworking activities, with the option of some metalwork. Why does Greenbushes have a Community Shed? When we called our first community meeting there was a strong outcry from local women to join the Shed. This is why we have diversified and provided a space which is inclusive. Do I need to join? For insurance purposes membership is essential. We also have the option of a social member-ship at $10 per annum. Full membership is $54 per annum. This fee entitles you to use the equipment, insurance, the use of wood and other consumables for projects, tea & coffee. Do I need to attend weekly? No, you may attend for one day a week, any day we are open or once a month, the choice is yours. What does the Shed have to offer me? We have a great variety of equipment available and several of our commit-tee members have the knowledge to teach you, from the beginning, how to create a project. Imagination and practice are the only barriers. Start with a bread board, bird box, make signs and gifts for family members, help with community projects, ask those with experience to help you. Please call the CRC for further information on 97464 3575, we look forward to seeing you there!

WE NEED YOU! The Greenbushes Community Resource Centre is seeking additional Management Committee members to join their team. If you have a few hours to spare once a month and are interested in your community please call the CRC on 9764 3575 to nominate, or for additional information.

Food Bank

The CRC has a small Food Bank service available for members of the community who may find themselves in need of food items.

Plant of the Month with Felicity Littleton

Photo: Terry Somerton

This month’s plant is the very special Billardiera variifolia. No common name that I can discover, however it is closely related to the Native Bluebell (B.heterophylla). There are 3 species of Billardieras flowering in the forest at present: B. variifolia, B.heterophylla and the very gorgeous B.florabunda – a lovely white variety. All Billardieras belong to the PITTOSPORACEAE family. A family renowned for its toughness. Billardieras are all climbing plants with alternate leaves, clusters of 5-petalled flowers and fleshy fruits. Regarding the Native Bluebell, it is still often marketed in some nurseries as its old name “Sollya heterophylla” The old Genus Sollya is named after Richard Solly, an 18

th Century English Botanist, whereas, the

Genus name Billardiera is named after Jacques Julien Houton de le Billardiere (1755-1834) French botanist on d’Entrecasteaux’s voyage to Western Australia and Tasmania. Note the deep blue to purple flowers of this

captivating species. The plant flowers from

December to March.
