Talks

Last summer we asked you to fill in a survey about Greenbelt. When we looked at the results, we noticed that most of you come to the Festival for its unique atmosphere and for our mix of speakers. So we’ll start with news about this year’s speakers, and end with an exciting new way to round off your weekend. And if you usually come because of the music, visual arts, comedy or any other part of our full-to-the-brim programme, don’t worry, there’s information on that too…

Margaret Barker, Old Testament scholar and green theologian, has been called one of the most inspiring Christian teachers of our time by the Bishop of London.

One-time priest Mark Vernon, argues that ‘passionate agnosticism’ is vital for the future of our planet and our souls.

Elsewhere, there’s another exciting and varied line-up of music, performing arts, worship, visual arts, literature and more.

We’re pleased to announce the sixth-ever world performance of Sir John Tavener’s The Veil of the Temple, conducted by Steve Stroman. An eight-hour long, spectacular conception played all night and culminating in a procession through the Festival at sunrise, this is sure to be a highlight of the weekend.

We’ve also got an acoustic performance from Delirious?’s Stu G, Shlomo & The Vocal Orchestra, thebandwithnoname, the Love & Joy Gospel Choir, LZ7 and yFriday, with many more headliners still to come.

Worship styles are, as ever, wide-ranging, from goth to Quaker, rock to Taize.

Greenbelt’s Self-Portrait makes its return, alongside See Me, an exhibition created by children in the care system. Visual Arts and Literature will again make their home in The Hub, and other highlights to be found there will include novelist Jasper Fforde, and the innovative Living Library. This is an exclusive for Greenbelt – it’ll be their only UK festival this year – and offers festivalgoers the chance to ‘loan’ a person for an hour to hear their individual story and ask questions. Visual Arts will also be giving away a limited edition artwork from artist, author, poet and songwriter Billy Childish.

Phoenix Nights’ Janice Connolly is one of the comedians who have been lined up, alongside Four Monks and a Nun and Mundo Jazz, the world’s funniest protest band.

The Youth programme has been expanded and will take a different shape in 2009. Many of last year’s favourites are

returning to our all-new youth village The Shed, such as the skate park, podules and Fresh Talent Stage (booking forms on the website now), and live bands returning to the Underground. This summer there’ll be much more, including The Shack, a late-night café and The Showreel, a late-night cinema, plus an improved youth guide. We’re taking young people out of the familiar youth venues and helping them to explore the whole Festival; get ready...

For children, Fischy Music and Tom Elliott will return, alongside Doug Horley and award-winning children’s author Sally Nicholls; and for kids and their parents, we’ve got two shows from CBBC’s Big Howard and Little Howard.

And, in association with our partners Christian Aid, Stan’s Café will be bringing their fantastic and thought-provoking exhibition, Of All The People In All The World, which brings a whole host of human statistics to life, using grains of rice.

Poor old Monday sometimes gets a bit overlooked. It’s the day when some Greenbelters are thinking more about packing away the tent than what’s on Mainstage. We felt a bit sorry for Monday, so this year we have decided to Keep Monday Special. So make sure you book Tuesday off work and come to the Grand Ball on Monday night, a joyous celebration with dance, cabaret and live music. You can show off those moves you’ve learnt in the tango workshops over the weekend, or
