Green Team – Work Plan

The scope of the revitalized Green Team will be to pick up where the past efforts left off. Initially, the

Green Team will work through all of the compiled information on previous efforts and develop goals. So

far a survey of previous efforts has been compiled along with a list of previously proposed projects but

each of these will be expanded as this team develops a framework for identifying projects within the

larger goals. In 2015, the Green Team will update Council on its findings and current practices as well as

make recommendations on directions forward to accomplish projects that will continue to work towards

the overarching goals.

The Team will be made up of 5 City Staff members:

Will be identified once the structure of Team is approved

The Team will also include 3 community member advisors:

Routt County Environmental Health or Facilities Representative

Building/Trades Professional

Member of the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council

All of the community members will be appointed by the City Manager and be asked to serve for at least

one year, with opportunities to continue on.

The Green Team will focus on the areas outlined in the original Council goal including; Air quality, water

quality/quantity, energy use, transportation and waste stream. The Team will also reference prior and

current planning documents that overlap with these focus areas. It will use the original adopted mission

statement of the Green Team as the guiding statement to start:

The Green Team is an organization of city staff from various departments that are committed to the

sustainable integrity of the City of Steamboat Springs day to day operations with an optimal mix of

resource efficiency, cost effectiveness, and employee wellbeing.

We will use a sustainability framework for making decisions and identifying emerging opportunities that

contribute to our goal of becoming a sustainable city. We will inspire commitment to this mission from

our employees and work with internal departments to further our common goals.

We work to reduce consumption of energy, depletion of resources, contributions to greenhouse gas

emissions, air and water pollution, and waste by identifying and sharing opportunities for change. The

Green Team encourages use of alternative transportation, sustainable purchasing, and promotes reuse

and recycling. We educate and encourage City staff to adopt green policies and practices.

The Green Team is focused on the triple bottom line which takes into account environmental and social

performance in addition to financial performance while reducing the City’s carbon footprint.

With this as the starting place, the Green Team will also spend next year beginning to develop a broader

community oriented plan for sustainability. This plan will include best practices from neighboring

communities and potentially include pursuing a STAR Community  rating. In this next phase, during the

development the plan our community partners and City Council will be updated and asked to participate

in all of the work sessions.
