A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

    LARGE CATECHISMPART II, APOSTLES CREED

    SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Condensed from CONCORDIA: THE LUTHERAN CONFESSIONS, copyright2005,2006 by Concordia Publishing House. Used by permission. All rights reserved. Topurchase a copy of CONCORDIA, call 800-325-3040.

The little word Lord means simply the same as redeemer. Itmeans the One who has brought us from Satan to God, from

death to life, from sin to righteousness, and who preserves usin the same. All the points that follow in this article serve to

explain and express this redemption. They explain how and by

whom it was accomplished. They explain how much it cost Himand what He spent and risked so that He might win us and

bring us under His dominion. It explains that He became man,was conceived and born without sin, from the Holy Spirit and

from the virgin Mary, so that He might overcome sin. Further,it explains that He suffered, died, and was buried so that He

might make satisfaction for me and pay what I owe, not withsilver or gold, but with His own precious blood. And He did all

this in order to become my Lord. He did none of these thingsfor Himself, nor did He have any need for redemption. After

that He rose again from the dead, swallowed up and devoured

death, and finally ascended into heaven and assumed the gov-ernment at the Father's right hand. He did these things so that

the devil and all powers must be subject to Him and lie at Hisfeet.

To explain all these points belongs to sermons, especially at

those times that are appointed for the purpose of treating eacharticle at length-for Christ's birth, sufferings, resurrection, as-

cension, and so on. (paragraphs 31-32)

    Prayer and Study

    Date: May 24 - May 30

Luther Quote: No clearer book has been written on earth than

the Holy Scripture. It compares with other books as the sun with

other lights...It is a horrible shame and crime against Holy Scrip-

ture and all Christendom to say that Holy Scripture is dark and

not so clear that everybody may understand it in order to teach

and prove his faith...If faith only hears Scripture, it is clear and

plain enough to enable it to say without the comments of all fa-

thers and teachers: That is right. I, too, believe it.

    Bible readings for the week:

    The Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synods history.

    Daily Prayers:

Sunday: For those who suffer from battle stress, which leaves lastingpsychological damage. The term now used to describe ailments is PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Both military base communities and

the VA healthcare system offer care programs for returning soldiers.Pray that our returning veterans might find healing and renewal so thatthey can reintegrate their lives, renew their marriages and family ties, and get back to their jobs successfully.
