A campus population of approximately 20,000 (16,500 students, 3500 faculty and staff).

ENERGY STAR language has been recently added to the following RFPs and tenders:
3 & 4. Sustainable Concepts in Procurement Policy and Design Guidelines
ENERGY STAR language and other sustainability considerations have been provided to the Director of Procurement for inclusion in a revision of Dalhousie’s Purchasing Policy to be released in Summer 2011.Targeting: Policy, RFPs, tenders, design guidelines.
Examples in PolicyTo the greatest extent possible, purchase:
Energy efficient equipment, supplies, and appliances that meet ENERGY STAR guidelines and recommendations
In all areas for which ENERGY STAR criteria exist, the products that Duke purchases will be ENERGY STAR qualified or meet the performance requirements for ENERGY STAR specifications. In areas for which guidelines are not available, Duke will seek energy efficient products.
Barriers and Opportunities
Many purchasers – Over 800 people have a purchasing card.
Target: specific departments that do bulk of purchasing.Ensure ENERGY STAR language is in policy, RFPs, tenders, design guidelines.
Decentralized purchasingPromoting and organizing movement to more standing offers: electronics as an example.
Conclusion and Next StepsPositive feedback received. Departments posting ENERGY STAR posters, tips sheets, and prompts electronically and at key locations. Dalhousie has recently added ENERGY STAR in RFPs and tenders such as MFDs, natural gas furnaces, AV equipment, and vending machines. Revisions have and are being made to plan to policies and design standards that should be approved in the summer. Refrigerator project.
