A glass beaker is filled with water and covered with a film specimen, as shown in the images below. The temperature of water and
environment may vary depending on the specific requirements (hot/cold fog). Water starts condensing at the bottom side of the
film and the time-dependent antifogging grade is evaluated visually according to reference images shown below. Images 1-4 show
the formation of fog. In images 5-8, water droplets are agglomerating and form bigger drops. Images 9-12 show the formation of a
transparent layer of water. Antifogging grades as shown in images 10-11 are considered acceptable, and image12 excellent.

LOXIOL® release agents are used for
calendering and injection molding of rigid
and flexible PVC. They are also used for
paste processing, and they can improve the
extrusion behavior, since release agents also
work as external lubricants. However, external
lubricants do not necessarily work as release
agents.
LOXIOL® release agents migrate to the interface
of polymer and processing machine, depending
on the particular level of compatibility with the
polymer matrix. Often LOXIOL® release agents
for PVC are based on complex esters, which are
lubricants with a polymeric structure and a high
molecular weight.

The slip performance of a plastics material is
determined by its coefficient of friction (ASTM
D1894), while the antiblocking performance is
measured via the blocking load (ASTM D3354).
A typical application for a slip agent is in
sealants for screw caps, i.e. to allow an easy
slip of the cap when opening a glass of canned
food. A typical application for an anti-block
agent is in unwinding a film roll or in denesting
of plastic cups, when adhesion of single plastic
layers needs to be minimized.

Fogging is the undesired formation of small
water droplets on the surface of films that are
used in food packaging and for greenhouses.
In both cases, there is a rather high difference
in temperature and relative humidity between
both sides of the film. This leads to condensati-
on of water, which becomes visible as fogging.
Fogging becomes a problem because it redu-
ces the transparency of the film. Packed food
is less visible, and plants in greenhouses have
less access to sunlight. In food packaging,
water can damage sensitive goods such as
mushrooms. Plants in greenhouses can be
damaged by bundled light, as water droplets
work as a lens.
Antifogging agents solve these issues by al-
tering the surface energy of plastics and/or
water. They inhibit the formation of water dro-
plets to create a homogeneous, transparent
water layer.
Our solutions address common issues with
traditional agricultural films by enabling light-
transmission and limiting the onset of water
droplets, therefore avoiding damage to plants
in growing tunnels.

Internal vs. External Antifogging Agents
While the internal application is standard, Emery Oleochemicals' Green Polymer Additives product portfolio includes antifogging
agents for internal and external application.
LOXIOL® external antifogging agents are applied to the ready film as an aqueous or aqueous/alcoholic solution by spraying or dipping.
This method is highly flexible compared to internal antifogging agents as small lots of film can be equipped with an antifogging agent
without changing anything in the upstream processes of the film production. Furthermore, the amount of antifogging agent that is
needed for a proper effect is much lower compared to internal application.
The crucial advantage of internal antifogging agents over external ones is that internal antifogging agents provide a self-healing effect.
That means, an antifogging agent that has been removed from the film surface can be restored by additive migration from the reservoir
in the film. This is not the case for externals.
All above mentioned products are primarily internal antifogging agents. However, they are also suitable for external application.

LOXIOL® lubricants improve the flow of the
polymer melt by reducing the friction of the
polymer molecules both to each other and
to the surface of the processing machine.
The shares of both factors determining the
overall friction depend on the compatibility of
polymer and lubricant and on the dosage. The
differentiation from a release agent is often
blurred, as the higher the dosage is, the more
lubricant accumulates at the contact area to
the processing machine.
The table represents proven technology. In
case a lubricant-polymer combination is not
marked, the lubricant still can provide a benefit
depending on the respective application.
LOXIOL® release agents improve the injection
molding and calendering process by reducing
friction and allowing more efficient processing.
Our release agents help to minimize cycle
times and support continuous production.
Advantages of LOXIOL® release agents
include:
 Improved surface finish
Prevention of surface defects caused by the
separation process
 Reduced machine wear and cleaning
frequency
 Minimized scrap

Pentaerythritol Esters
Pentaerythritol esters with long chain
fatty acids such as stearic acid, also called
pentaerythritol tetrastearate or simply PETS,
are a class of polymer additives with a strong
release effect. They are typically used in
polycarbonate and ABS polymers, but also in
PET, PA and other plastics. These release agents
have extremely low volatility, a minimum
influence on the transparency of the finished
article and excellent thermostability.

The different grades of LOXIOL®
pentaerythritol esters produced by Emery
Oleochemicals offer similar benefits.
When feeding an injection molding machine
or an extruder using plastics compounds
that contain LOXIOL® pentaerythritol esters,
improved feed behavior are achieved and
granules are prevented from melting in
the feed zone (bridge formation). LOXIOL®
pentaerythritol esters also have a favorable
influence on the tool filling speed by lowering
friction.
As release agents, these additives prevent the
polymer melt from sticking to the hot machine
parts and facilitate mold release at higher
temperatures. Even in a mold with a complex
geometry, parts can be demolded easily.
LOXIOL® pentaerythritol esters also improve
the surface properties of the finished articles.

Powder Injection Molding (PIM) is an ideal
method to form complex metal (MIM) or
ceramic (CIM) parts in large quantities.
Emery Oleochemicals can supply a polyamide
based binder system as a ready-to-use solution
to be compounded with the powder to make
the feedstock. We can also supply the single
ingredients for customers who want to tailor
the binder composition to their specific
requirements.
LOXIOL® 2472 lowers the melting temperature
and improves the flowability of selected
polyamides, while LOXIOL® G 20 works as a
release agent for the feedstock.
After the forming process, solvent debinding
is done with acetone before going into thermal
debinding and sintering. Polyamides as binder
backbone provide a much better strength
both of green and brown parts compared to
polyolefines used in most catalyst or water
debinding systems.

55
VAZELAIC ACID
56
Polymeric Building Blocks
EMEROX® azelaic acid is produced via Emery
Oleochemicals’ proprietary ozonolysis
technology which uses the powerful reactivity
of ozone to cleave oleic acid into azelaic and
pelargonic acid. EMEROX® 1144 azelaic acid
was developed specifically for the preparation
and modification of high molecular weight
polymers. The unique characteristics make it
an excellent choice for linear polyamides that
are formed by the reaction of EMEROX® azelaic
acid with diamines. These polyamides use
either EMEROX® 1144 as the principal dibasic
acid component (e.g. PA 6,9 Nylon) or as a
dibasic acid modifier.
The introduction of EMEROX® 1144, a linear
nine-carbon structure, improves the polymer
low-temperature impact strength without
sacrificing high temperature performance
of linear polyamides. Furthermore, linear
polyamides utilizing EMEROX® 1144 enable
products that possess excellent abrasion
resistance, low water absorption and high
impact resistance.
Functional esters of EMEROX® 1144 can be
used as components in urethane and as a
source of soft segments in co-polyester fibers,
imparting good low temperature performance
with hydrolytic resistance.
