Green National Park

Occupying roughly 6000 squared km on the Southeast coast of the United States we are

proud to be the most visited National Park in the nation. Florida has always been home to some of the most diverse and lush environments in

the Country and we are proud to be at the forefront of those environments. It is our goal to

forever preserve and protect these wonderful ecosystems. So welcome to a virtual tour of the

Green National Park!

Located in Southern Florida, Green National Park offers landscapes, wildlife, and experiences found

nowhere else on Earth.

Ignore the fact that the map says the Everglades (just a typo!)

Green National Park

We are proud to have become a National Park in 1872, making us the first National Park in the entire country. This is due to the combined efforts of then president, Emerald and Vice

President Moss. They recognized the need to protect this verdant and necessary habitat and

today we proudly continue their legacy.

The Founding Fathers of this Wonderful Place

Where as these Great Men Certainly Set the Building

Blocks for our Beautiful Park, we have an even older

presence to thank for its existence: THE GEOLOGIC

PROCESS!

A vast marshland such as we have here is due to the underlying rock formation of Florida. The

floor beneath Green National Park formed somewhere between two and twenty million

years ago. That may seem like a large gap but in Geologic time that is a mere blip on the scale. Since that bed was formed it has been flooded with seawater at least seven times, leading to

the salt heavy environment crucial to the life of this land. The heavy compression of salt on the

floor of the land has lead to a creation of predominantly limestone.

For years hunters had been picking the region clean of alligators, birds, frogs, and fish, but as the human

population of Southern Florida increased the number of hunters by extension increased. The effects were beginning to be devastating. In addition, the entire

region was pillaged for lumber, further destroying the habitat. Perhaps the most devastating of human

influences however was the construction of canals in order to divert water flow to the area In order to create a more suitable environment for human society. It was

at this point that Emerald and Moss decided to act.

The park was originally created without altruistic ideas behind it, the Nineteenth Century not

being overly concerned with Environmentalism. It was originally quarantined due to a concern of

the area’s rapidly diminishing resources. If resources were not protected and rationed then

the region would soon be of little use. Thankfully, today we have taken on a more

conservational viewpoint of the park.

Help us Protect our Creatures!

Despite the capitalistic beginnings of this amazing place we now preserve rather than exploit wildlife. Despite dedication to the protection of all wildlife and ecosystems we are particularly devoted to the absolute protection of two great and incredibly different and beautiful creatures: the Florida Panther and the Manatee. It is these two creatures that make dominate the park’s two main features and environments.

Check out our Park’s Amazing Features!

Mangrove swamps are one of the dominant features in out park. What is fascinating about

these swamps is that the mangrove is one of the only types of tree in the world to be able to live in salt water. Mangroves are truly impressive due to

their resistance to extremely harsh conditions, such as extreme wind, high temperature, muddy soil etc. These trees are often called the guardians of Florida

as they protect the coast from Hurricanes, absorbing flood waters and thus preventing

erosion.

We know what you are thinking!

You are thinking, what is so exciting about a bunch of trees, no matter how sturdy they are. Fortunately these swamps house a wide variety

of wildlife, such as:

• Birds (hawks, pelicans, terns, pigeons)

• 220 species of fish

Most Notably, the Mangrove Forest is also Home to one of Earth’s most Beautiful Creatures: The Manatee

The Manatee Forest was formed and to and continues to serve as the only manatee preservation site on Earth. These creatures are perfectly suited to the unique salt and fresh water combination of the swamps. Also called the Sea Cow, the manatee is a beautiful and curious animal that will investigate anything new to their environment. Due to their gentle and inquisitive nature we strongly encourage boating in the Manatee Forest. However, motor boats are strictly FORBIDDEN in the interest of preserving these wonderful animals.

Our beautiful mangrove forests are truly unique to us. We have the largest population of mangrove

trees in the world growing right here. The process that allows such rapid and continuous growth here

and only lies in the Florida Basin. The constant influx of hurricane storm surge brings a large

amount of salt water further inland that would otherwise be possible. It is this process that allows mangrove trees to grow in such numbers as found

nowhere else on Earth. Unable to grow in fresh water alone, without the constant flow of salt water

such an amazing ecosystem could not exist.

Look: Another feature!

Further inland, our park also has a small concentration of Pineland called Panther Land. We

only have 20,000 acres. This is five times the amount outside of the park in all Florida. This is an environment that NEEDS protecting. It is home to a

variety on animals• Birds (woodpeckers, loggerhead shrikes, eastern

meadowlarks)• Black Bears

• Florida Panthers (of which there are less than 100 left in the wild in all Florida.

Panther Land: land of the Panther

Panther Land is home to ten completely independent Florida Panthers. The rarest animal in the park, there are less than one hundred left in the wild on Earth. We are limited to ten due to the large territory that each cat commands.

To gaze on one of these majestic predators is an experience you can find nowhere else on Earth

and this park is dedicated to preserving that experience for years to come.

In addition to Protecting Wildlife, we Service many outdoor activities and

interests:

• Camping: We have over 300 campsites available to the public for use.

• Boating: Canoeing, Kayaking, and even low powered motor-boating is encouraged.

• Hiking: We have hundreds of trails just waiting to be explored by the avid adventurer.
