We have just had the most incredible two weeks at JMR!

Before heading south to round two of the V8SuperTourers in Christchurch, we decided to conduct a quick test at the Taupo Motorsport Park with the #47 Falcon. After going through all of the information available to us since Round 1 at Hampton Downs we had made some minor but significant changes to the car’s set-up. On Thursday 29 March we headed out in the afternoon and completed around 15 laps of the circuit. After that test we knew we were heading to Christchurch with good reason to be confi-dent of the car’s performance.

Then with the two-car transporter and merchandise trailer all packed up, we set off on our promotional tour which took us via Napier and Nelson then Christchurch. In Napier on Friday 31 March, we enjoyed a fantastic sponsor evening at City Collision Repairs with 150 guests. It was an excellent night, getting to meet the many people who support JMR and show everyone our two V8SuperTourers. The next day CCR opened their doors to the public as we showed off our full JMR set-up. With a sausage sizzle, the kids’ colouring-in competition and an amazing collection of rare cars and motor bikes including a genuine Ferrari F40, it was an awesome day. We were swamped by families keen to see the cars and bikes and we had heaps of children submitting their entries for the “Macspeed” colouring competition.

Our transporter then headed south via Blenheim where its tractor unit was refreshed courtesy of Talley’s who let us use their new Freightliner for our South Island leg. I met the transporter in Nelson as we all got ready for Tuesday afternoon’s kids’ promo and then the sponsor evening, both held at the world-class World of Wearable Arts Centre and Classic Cars Museum. The Nelson public loved seeing the 7-litre V8SuperTourers up close, and again we had lots of children rushing to see us after school. That evening it was wonderful to welcome sponsors and supporters from around the region and thanks to everyone to helped us have another very successful function inside the Classic Cars Museum. Our cars looked right at home amongst the many and varied array of classics on display. When you visit Nelson next time be sure to visit the WOW Centre!

The new truck and transporter unit headed south to Christchurch on Wednesday, receiving plenty of waves and in-terested looks from public along the way, arriving in very settled weather - we were in for a brilliant Easter weekend! On Thursday we started early with a visit to Ideal Electrical in Sydenham, then onto Amcor’s two sites in Hornby. Next stop was at lunch time at Blackwoods Protector with a big crowd coming through for lunch and the chance to win prizes. Our final promo for the day was at Avon City Ford with two other Ford teams of drivers Eddie Bell and Craig Baird. The fans really enjoyed seeing the cars and transporters and hearing the sound of the 7-litre engines - we knew a big crowd was building for the weekend!

Round 2 wrap-up - Powerbuilt Tools Raceway 6-8 AprilWe had a quick bit of work to do on Friday morning, as we fitted some recently-arrived updates to the cars at Avon City Ford. Steve Richards, the team and I then headed off to the official V8SuperTourers pre-event scrutineering and autograph signing session at Bush Inn Riccarton. The crowd that had gathered to get their favourite drivers’ autographs was as big as I have ever seen in New Zealand – it was right up there in sheer numbers with similar promotions at Bathurst. Our cars and transporter drew plenty of attention and the post-ers were flying out the door. Then we whipped out to the circuit to set up our pit areas, catering and mer-chandise sites. We had an excellent set-up with three garages for the two cars and two portable buildings for merchandise and catering, thanks to Portabuild of Christchurch.

On Saturday we only had one one-hour practice session to get Steve and I dialled in with the cars. Steve was driving at Ruapuna for the first time, but he was instantly on the pace. I was also comfortable on the first session and we thought our 7th place was respectable considering we did not use any new tyres. I recorded 1m 24.603 with Steve just behind on 1m 24.855. The conditions were hotter and windier for 30 minutes of qualifying early in the afternoon and, in the early stages, our times were quite slow. I was fastest until the last five minutes when Fabian Coulthard put in two flying laps to grab pole with a time of 1m 23.764, Jonny Reid was second and then me in third with 1m 24.362. Steve was only 0.4s behind but due to the intense nature of the series would grid up 12th with his best time of 1m 24.786.

Come race one at 4pm - 15 laps with incredible weather and a massive crowd - I had a great start to come out of the first corner in second place. I had some pace in the first two laps then the car wasn’t handling right. We later found out that we had broken a suspension component. So I did all I could to hold off Jonny Reid for second place for the entire race and grabbed my second podium finish of the series. Steve worked away to 11th place but later that night we had found an issue with the front splitter on his car that caused him a lot of understeer. The team set about preparing the cars that night for Sunday’s two longer races.

Round 2 wrap-up cont...Sunday’s crowd was the biggest we’ve seen at Ruapuna for over a decade. Our merchandise sales set a record for any event we have sold at over the past six years and we’ve signed and given away 2,500 posters in just two rounds! Before race two – 20 laps - we made slight adjustments to both cars. Steve was happy with his car and moved forward again to place 9th. I started on the front row of the grid for the first time in V8SuperTourers and predictably at Ruapuna, that was the worst place to be going into the first turn. Reid and Craig Baird both passed me by turn three, and although I had better pace than the race before, I still needed more. I figured that if I stayed in fourth I would be able to start in third for the final race on the inside of the track. That’s where I finished.

The feature race for each V8SuperTourer round carries more points than the two preliminary races. The team made small changes to #47 and #556 cars for the final race, as we both looked for a little more speed. Fabian Coulthard had dominated the weekend’s racing with two wins from the front. I knew if I could get past him at the start that I could hold him off. The start was hectic; we were four-wide at the first corner with me on the inside of Coulthard, Baird and Reid. I came out of the first corner with the lead and then drove some of the most intense laps of my driving career to win our first ever V8SuperTourers race! The changes we made to our car had worked and we were able to hold off Fabian when the pressure was on. I would rate that as the best-ever sprint race victory of my career and the team, fans and sponsors at the track were naturally delighted to see our car win (except the Murphy and Coulthard fans...). This win was the direct result of team work and perseverance. Steve also made some great gains with his car speed and finished seventh with a fastest lap just 0.2s behind mine.

So, we now also have the series’ lead and that has given us all a big lift. The CRC #556 Car is ninth in the points and, with a little bit of lady luck on its side, will soon score podium finishes. On Sunday night V8SuperTourers’ technical team judged that a suspension arm on the #47 car was an incorrect length. They deducted 50 points from my total, but I still lead the champi-onship from Jonny Reid by 19 points. We are appealing the decision and will know next week if we can get the points back.

At each and every round of this inaugural season of V8SuperTourers we face uncharted waters, so the team that makes the least mistakes over the whole season will win the title. We are building a fantastic team spirit and, now that we have the pack chasing us, our attention to detail will naturally continue to improve.

See you all at “mighty Manfeild” in just a fortnight’s time.
