Dr. Stephen AlltopMusic Director, Choral Conductor, &Collaborative Pianist

Stephen Alltop enjoys a multi-faceted career as a conductor of choruses and orchestras and as a keyboard soloist. As Music Director of the Apollo Chorus of Chicago, Dr. Alltop has led the Chorus in numerous masterworks and prepared collaborations with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Ravinia Festival, Chicago Opera Theater, and the Oprah Winfrey Show. Alltop is Music Director of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra and Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra and serves on the conducting faculty at Northwestern University. He has guest conducted ensembles across the US and in Europe and performed with many of the leading artists and composers of our time.

Dr. John HughesHost & Assistant Conductor

John Hughes is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Ripon College in Ripon, WI. In addition to conducting the college’s choirs, Dr. Hughes teaches conducting, choral methods, and private voice lessons. He is passionate about choral literature and scholarship and is in demand as a clinician and honor choir conductor. He is a frequent reviewer of new choral music, books, and recordings in the Choral Journal, and he also edits the Repertoire Forum column for the bi-monthly publication Choral Director. He also serves on the editorial board of Melisma, the newsletter of the north-central division of the American Choral Directors Association.

Since 1982, singers from around the country have attended the Green Lake Choral Institute and returned year after year. Sir David Willcocks led the choir for the first 20 years. His rich tradition continues with Dr. Stephen Alltop, who leads the choir in learning and performing all kinds of choral music — with orchestra! You’ll make life-long friends and enjoy exquisite performances by members of the Chicago Symphony, the Apollo, and the Grant Park Choruses. As a bonus, you get to spend free time in beautiful Green Lake, Wisconsin’s vacation paradise.

EligibilityWe welcome individuals 18 years of age and older with recent choral experience. Exceptional students under the age of 18 may be accepted by audition. Scholarships available based on need.

Housing & MealsDouble and single occupancy campus dorms at Ripon College are available from Thursday through Sunday morning. Please reserve as early as possible. Rooms with a queen and two singles at the Green Lake Conference Center are $128/night for two. Participants staying at the GLCC may purchase meal tickets for Bauer Dining Hall. Housing reservations must be made directly with Ripon College at 920-748-8164 and/or the Green Lake Conference Center at 920-294-3323. Meals are on your own, and a list of local restaurant options will be provided at registration.
