Green GroundsEnvironmental awareness has continued to rise significantly among architects, developers and institutions, and so has the number of the so-called ‘green’ proposals. Two Dutch studios – MVRDV and NL–, and two Danish ones – BIG and JDS – deploy formal and material strategies to make the most of the natural resources avai-lable in four ecologically sustainable projects: a 550-hectare remodelation in the old industrial and harbor area of Caen, in France; a supermar-ket buried beneath a vast landscaped roof on the Chinese island of Hainan; a residential block in Stockholm’s Gärdet Park; and an office building in Istanbul with green terraces that imitate the undulating forms of the surroundings.

MVRDV + NL + BIG + JDSLa creciente preocupación de arquitectos, pro-motores e instituciones por el medio ambiente ha hecho proliferar las llamadas propuestas ‘ver-des’. Con estrategias basadas en el aprovecha-miento de los recursos naturales, dos estudios holandeses —MVRDV y NL— y otros dos dane-ses —BIG y JDS— resuelven cuatro proyectos de carácter sostenible: una remodelación de 550 hectáreas en la antigua zona industrial y portuaria francesa de Caen, un supermercado enterrado bajo una gran cubierta ajardinada en la isla china de Hainan, un bloque residencial en el parque de Gärdet en Estocolmo y un edificio de oficinas en Estambul con terrazas vegetales que imitan las formas ondulantes del entorno.

Chipperfield / TAAUNuevo Polanco is an old industrial area in Mexico City, where several refurbishment and conversion projects are currently in progress. Aside from the Jumex Museum, there are other noteworthy buildings in the area such as the Cervantes Theater, by the Madrid-based office Ensamble Studio, and Plaza Carso, an urban redevelopment proposal that combines com-mercial, residential and cultural programs, with works like the Soumaya Museum. Designed to house the Jumex collection of contemporary art, the new museum is organized in two parts: a sculptural main volume, which includes exhibi-tion spaces and social programs; and an under-ground base for services and parking.

Museo JumexNuevo Polanco es una antigua zona industrial en Ciudad de México, actualmente en proceso de reconversión y transformación de usos, que alberga, además del Jumex, el enterrado Teatro Cervantes, obra de los madrileños Ensamble Studio, y la Plaza Carso, un desarrollo urbano que integra oficinas y usos comercial, residen-cial y también cultural —el Museo Soumaya—. Concebido para acoger la colección Jumex de arte contemporáneo, el museo se organiza en dos partes: un escultórico volumen principal, que evoca las construcciones indígenas, desti-nado a exposiciones y a programas sociales; y una base enterrada con la forma triangular de la parcela, para servicios y aparcamiento.

Los suizos Herzog y de Meuron junto con el estudio Hassell han sido seleccionados para remodelar la histórica estación de Flinders Street en Melbourne, en un concurso internacional en el que también fueron finalistas Hadid y Grimshaw.

UNStudio ha ganado el concurso para el desarrollo del Yongjia World Trade Center con una propuesta de cinco torres, de entre 146 y 287 metros, situadas en el barrio financiero de Wenzhou, formando un eje verde junto al río Nanxi.

El holandés Rem Koolhaas ha sido elegido para diseñar una intervención sobre 87 hectáreas de superficie que ampliará la ciudad con tres nuevos distritos destinados a instituciones gubernamentales, oficinas y un nuevo campus.

La propuesta de Richard Rogers ha sido seleccionada para ampliar la terminal del aeropuerto de Lyon-Saint Exupéry. El nuevo edificio circular, de 70.000 metros cuadrados, estará situado junto a la estación TGV construida por Santiago Calatrava.

Con una propuesta de volúmenes cúbicos translúcidos, SANAA, con Ricky Liu, se ha impuesto a otros cuatro equipos —Stucheli, MASS, Eisenman y Jean-Loup Baldacci— en el concurso para un centro cultural en la isla de Taiwán.

Tras haber quedado finalista hace un año con Frank Gehry y Zaha Hadid, Jean Nouvel —en colaboración con el Beijing Institute of Architecture Design—, será el encargado de construir el Museo de Arte Nacional de China en Pekín.

Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and the firm Hassel have been chosen among five finalists to remodel Flinders Street station in Melbourne, after an international competition in which Zaha Hadid and Nicholas Grimshaw also participated.

SANAA and local architect Ricky Liu have been selected as winners among four other teams – Stucheli, MASS, Eisenman and Jean-Loup Baldacci – to build the Taichung City Cultural Center with a proposal of translucid cubic volumes.

UNStudio has won the competition for the development of the Yongjia World Trade Center in the Wenzhou financial district with a proposal that comprises five towers, from 146 to 287 meters, and generates a green corridor along Nanxi River.

El británico construirá en la ciudad marroquí el nuevo MMPVA: el mayor museo del mundo dedicado a la fotografía, que albergará un colección permanente y exposiciones temporales en una superficie de 6.000 metros cuadrados. The British architect will build the new MMPVA: the world’s largest museum (6,000 square meters) dedicated to photography, and which will house a permanent collection with works from the 19th century onwards as well as temporary exhibitions.

El Estadio Nacional de Japón, construido en 1964, será remodelado por Zaha Hadid y se convertirá de nuevo en sede olímpica para Tokio 2020. La nueva ampliación del centro deportivo podrá albergar hasta 80.000 espectadores.

Los sevillanos Cruz y Ortiz construirán en Lugano —donde recientemente ganaron el concurso para la remodelación del Estadio Cornaredo—, un campus universitario sobre una parcela estrecha y alargada junto a la estación de tren.

La propuesta ‘Veil’, de los madrileños Nieto Sobejano, ha sido seleccionada entre tres finalistas para transformar la fachada del hospital universitario Bristol Royal Infirmary dentro de un plan que prevé añadirle también un pequeño jardín.

‘Learning from Vernacular’, en la cúpula de Buckminster Fuller del Vitra Campus, muestra la colección de maquetas de la EPFL y recoge ejemplos de arquitectura tradicional y diseños contemporáneos derivados de esas tipologías vernáculas.

Hasta el 9 de noviembre se puede visitar, en la galería madrileña Ivorypress, la muestra dedicada al artista israelí Ron Arad, que expone los resultados de su experimentación con materiales como el polietileno o el aluminio.

Hasta el próximo 1 de diciembre, la exposición ‘Cut ‘n’ Paste’ repasa, desde un punto de vista tanto estético como cultural, la evolución de la técnica del collage desde los primeros trabajos hasta los experimentos más recientes.

Como resultado de un concurso internacional, el estudio de Henning Larsen construirá un nuevo centro de exposiciones y conferencias como peculiar acceso al edificio protegido del parlamento de Baden-Württemberg en Stuttgart.

The Madrid-based architects Nieto Sobejano have been selected among three other entrants with their proposal ‘Veil’ to transform the facade of the Bristol Royal Infirmary, within a plan that also foresees adding a small open garden.

Both from an aesthetic point of view and from a cultural one, the exhibition ‘Cut ‘n’ Paste’ goes over the evolution of collage techniques, from the first photocollages up to the more recent experiments. The show is on view until 1 December 2013.

The exhibition, held at the Dome of the Vitra Campus, gathers the EPFL collection of models and shows examples of traditional architecture and contemporary designs derived from these vernacular typologies.

The exhibition devoted to the Israeli artist Ron Arad displays the results of his expressive investigation with materials such as polyethylene or aluminum, and will be on view until 9 November 2013 at Ivorypress in Madrid.

As a result of an international competition, Henning Larsen’s office will build a new center with exhibition and conference rooms as a unique access to the listed Parliament building of Baden-Württemberg in the city of Stuttgart.

Built in 1964, the National Olympic Stadium of Japan will be refurbished by Zaha Hadid to become the centerpiece of Tokyo 2020. The new extension of the sports complex will accommodate up to 80.000 spectators.

The Sevillian architects Cruz & Ortiz will develop their second project in Lugano, where they recently won the commission to remodel Cornaredo Stadium. The new project is a university campus of 25,000 square meters on a plot by the train station.
