WORLD BOOK DAY

Ready, Steady, Read!

To celebrate World Book Day -on Thurs-day 7th March the children will be given information about the Ready, Steady, Read challenge which will be taking place next week. This will be a chance to enthuse the chil-dren about books and reading as well as raise funds to keep our fabulous library bursting at the seams with stupendous books!

YEAR 1 TRIP TO WYE

On Thursday, Year 1 walked to Wye and spent some time exploring the village, and visiting the church. The trip was part of our investigations into village life (Geography) and Christianity (RE). At Wye Church we met

Revd Holy who spoke to the children about the many different ceremonies that occur in the Christian Church. Then we had our very own wedding ceremony—celebrating the marriage of Rosalind and Jonathan, followed by a christening ceremony to baptise the baby daughter of Eryn and Oliver. HALF TERM SKIING

INTERNET SAFETY: Recent Viral Social Media Story

Following recent media stories regarding a viral story being shared on social media, I feel I should raise awareness of the importance of online safety. Having sought advice I would like to share the following information with parents. A longer version of this article is being sent out to all parents via our clarion call messaging system.

I appreciate that the story has created some anxiety amongst adults (and children who have seen the images) but it’s im-portant to recognise that most of the current concerns have been fuelled by the recent publicity. Credible reports about this issue are very rare, making it difficult for people to know precisely what is going on. Due to recent publicity it is likely that content is now being created and shared on popular social media apps to generate fear and panic.

Viral stories such as this often contain graphic or distressing imagery; we strongly recommend this is not shared with chil-dren. It is also important to recognise that by mentioning specific challenges by name, we may encourage children to ex-plore something that they were previously unaware of, either out of curiosity, or because they want to feel involved in what everyone is talking about.

Online safety is an important part of keeping children safe at Spring Grove School and is taught to all pupils. Our curriculum empowers children to become critical thinkers and to understand how they can to stay safe and behave appropriately online, but we can only be successful in keeping children safe online if we work with you.

Vigilance The governors and staff at Spring Grove regard children’s safety as our highest priority. We advise as follows: the school is playing its part by providing filters at school that prevent unwanted access to the wrong sites and also the means to identi-fy when the ‘wrong’ words are being typed into search bars. However, this should never be a substitute for vigilance being maintained at home as well as at school. All parents should be aware that children need restrictions on their computer time, that they should not be allowed unlimited online access. It may interest parents to know that a survey amongst our Reception children this week revealed that whilst they are aware that they should report things they find disturbing to an adult, more than 50% of them claim they have played on Fortnite, a game designed for children with a minimum age of 12!

Conningbrook Sailing Club are running two beginner days in the Easter holi-days on Mon-day 8th and Fri-day 12th April with 8 places each and would be keen to have children from Spring Grove School who

have never sailed before, to come along to one of those days. They also plan to run after school sailing clubs on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for the first half of the Summer term in smaller groups of 6. Once again, they are very keen to have Spring Grove Children. Registration is already open for the holiday days and Tuesday and Thurs-day clubs on the webcollect site via their website: www.cinqueportsailing.org. Children must be aged 8 and above. SPORT U10\U11 Rugby v Dover College U11 Match Reporter – Issah K-G On Wednesday, we quickly wolfed down our lunch and sprinted off the to the bus. The SG U11 B Team were playing Dover College at rugby. It was a very long journey but finally we got there. The A Team had started training for their match but our match was later. After the A Team match finished, we were ready. Everyone made some extraordinary tackles, especially Cameron and some players scored some tries. When the half time whistle blew, we were winning because they had 4 and we had an astonishing 5 tries! We had a super team talk. Just when things were looking up, they scored. Luckily, in this half we scored 4 more tries and they scored 1 more and the try I mentioned. The score was 9-6 to Spring Grove and we came back happier than when we went there. Thanks to Mr Smith for taking us and the anonymous chef who made the meal. Man of the Match was Cameron. Well played SG. U10 Match Reporter – Thomas B

On Wednesday 27 February, SG went face to face with Dover College. Sadly, we had to play tag rugby and we were quite rusty at it after we hadn’t played it for a while. So after all the changing at break time, the big game kicked off. We got to a bit of a nervy start and conceded a try. It was a major breakthrough when Sam, Felipe and Finn each scored a try. Then, Dover sadly got through our defence and scored a try. Half time at 3-2 we were determined to win. Mr Curnow gave us a quick team talk and we got un-derway. After Daniel scored a prolific try, we got back into our defensive line but straight after that, Dover scored another try. But James quickly got through the de-fence and scored a good try. It was like a ping-pong game no matter how quickly it

went!!! Dover scored another quick 2 tries but that didn’t stop Daniel from scoring again!!!! And what a shame it was when Dover scored once again. The Dover coach wanted a last minute team talk with his players and the game got underway again. 1 second left and Felipe played a lovely pass out to the wing to me… and I was so close to scoring a great try but the corner where I tried to score, there were Dover players all around me and I accidentally dropped the ball into touch and…. The whistle blew. I’ll be honest with you I was very disappointed that I didn’t have the match-winning try. The final score was 6-6 to nobody. Thank you to Mr Curnow for coach-ing us and Mr Curtis for preparing the match tea. Better luck next year SG. U8\U9 Rugby v Dover College Match Reporter – Freddie L

On Wednesday 27th February, SG U8s took on the Dover College team who had just finished a game against the U9s. Early on Dover College showed they were warmed up and had learned from their first game, but they still struggled to stop our direct runs. Shaysha, Osten and Ferdie scored great tries but Dover College matched us each time. The game was very tight running into half time but unbelievably it appeared that their half-time talk was better than ours! Dover College came out throwing wide passes that found our defence wanting. Ferdie did score another 2 tries but we just couldn’t stop our opponents building a score.

The final score was 8-5 to Dover College. The man of the match was Ferdie for his impressive hatrick. Thank you Mr Curnow for refereeing and for coaching us. Better luck next time SG!

SPORT U9 Netball v Ashford Match Reporter - Emilia N

On Thursday the U9s went to Ashford School for a netball match. We lost the toss and the game began. In the first quarter, Ashford scored one goal but we were unable to score. Miss Spicer gave us a great team talk about snatching the ball. In the second quar-ter we still didn’t score and Ashford scored again. In the third quarter - guess what? May scored a goal! Our chances were looking up. In the final quarter, Ashford scored again and we were unable to, even though we were trying as hard as we could - well, that’s what Miss Spicer said! The final score was 4:1 to Ashford. Thank you Ashford for the deli-

cious hot dogs and apples. Thank you Miss Spicer for coaching us and for driving us to the match. Better luck next time SG. U9 Netball v Ashford Match Reporter - Sophie B-S Let’s just say that… it was a… brave loss…, okay? I guess I’ll have to tell you all about it... Ashford scored two goals in the first quarter. That’s because we were SCARED, ok? our guard was down, and it was very cold. Ash-

ford wore hoodies which was a bit of a disadvantage for us. The next quarter was about the same with Ashford dominating most of the game and scoring two more goals. The team talks were good, anyway, third quarter, ACTION! So, our defence was thicker. However hard we tried, the ball just wouldn’t go in and we were just a bit unlucky, and Ashford scored one more goal. Unfortunately, Ashford managed to score another point in the final quarter. The match ended six nil to Ash-ford. We did become feistier and fiercer. We all had our moments, and we all had fun! We were strong in attack and feisty in defence and improved from the first half. After-

wards, we had a lovely match tea of a hotdog. The player of the match was, drumroll please…. Isobel Jones! Congratulations Isobel. Even though Ashford were a good team, we held our ground and it was the first match for most of our girls. Thank you to Miss Spicer for taking us and Miss Drury for her great coaching.
