Cherokee County’s hot and humid summers can make going outside an unpleasant prospect for many. Fortu-nately, there are several avenues that allow visitors and residents an oppor-tunity embrace the summer heat and enjoy time outside with friends and family.

Lake Tenkiller and the Illinois River are two of these attractions.

Tenkiller is known for its fishing, marinas and beautiful scenery, while the Illinois offers kayaking and rafting down its many miles of water. While there is plenty to do for those who want more freedom in their diversions, there are also structured events staged by community organizations for enter-tainment, fundraising, and fellowship. Lake Tenkiller especially is known for

several events. The Tenkiller Poker Run has seen a

large increase in popularity over the past several years. What started as an annual event to raise money for Beta Sigma Phi Mu Omega’s “Hand Up” women’s scholarship has grown larger than the group had originally antici-pated.

“It is so exciting to know that par-ticipants plan and look forward to the Poker Run each year,’’ said Drew Ballew, member of Beta Sigma Phi Mu Omega. “The theme of our shirts each year is a big deal; people look forward to that purchase and to know that the proceeds are actually benefiting a good cause.”

The event has its contestants run-ning from marina to marina to collect chips. At the end, winners are selected and cash prizes are handed out.

The beautiful scenery at Lake Tenkiller and the Illinois River attracts visitors to Cherokee County from all over. Because of this, the community puts on several events to demonstrate hospitality and creativity.

Phi Mu Omega, believes the event does a great job bringing people to the com-munity.

“It gives the staff the opportunity to interact with the public that we serve, as well as bringing visitors to our com-munity. The staff is also committed to providing scholarships for non-tradi-tional students, who may not other-wise have any scholarship opportuni-ties to help pay for tuition,” she said.

Musical performances are also com-monplace at Tenkiller, with different local artists performing at marinas almost weekly. Dr. John Fell and his band, DocFell & Co., regularly perform at the lake. He and many other local artists love the atmosphere.

“Playing Tenkiller with DocFell & Co. has become one of my favorite gigs every year,” said Fell. “The chill lake crowd always gives us good vibes. After a long day in the sun, what better way to relax than live music and cold beer as the sun sets on the horizon?”

The Illinois River does not have as many scheduled public events, but the numerous resorts and float companies that line the water are always welcome for groups to run down the river. But there are music festivals planned for later.

Prior to the pandemic, music aficio-nados enjoyed Medicine Stone. This year, instead, Diamondhead Resort will host the Diamond Stone Festival Sept. 9-11, bringing in big names in country and Red Dirt music.

Daniel Tye, organizer, told the Tah-lequah Daily Press in April that the festival won’t replace Medicine Stone – only scratch the community’s itch for live music while it’s on hiatus.

“We’re not trying to take anything aware from Medicine Stone; we’re just trying to build on the reputation it started,” Tye said. “Medicine Stone is a special festival to a lot of Tahlequah and the community, so we just want-ed to offer regional, national, and even international independent live music.”

The lineup for the three-day event includes some familiar faces, such as RC & The Ambers, Autumn Ragland, Joe Mack, and others known for play-ing a lick or two. But also gracing the stage are performers familiar to people

throughout the country. The headliner is The Death South, a band that saw its music video for “In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company” go viral in recent years. The song was also featured in season two of the popular Netflix series “The Um-brella Academy.”

Mike McClure, an Oklahoma legend in the Red Dirt community, and Sun Volt also top the lineup’s list of bands. Other artists to perform include: Mike and The Moonpies, John Fullbright, Courtney Patton, Jason Eady, Van-doliers, Red Dirt Rangers, Ben Miller Band, Adam Hood, The Damn Quails, Olivia Jean, Savanna Chestnut & the Field Hands, BC & The Big Rig, Dylan Stewart, Dan Martin, Chris Blevins, Jacob Tovar, Paul Benjamin, Charlie Stout, The Great American Wolf, Ju-liet McConkey, Doc Fell & Co., Dar-by Sparkman, J.R. Carroll, Maddie K, Johnny Burke, and Lance Roark and The Drifters.

To purchase tickets or for more infor-mation, visit diamondstonefestival.com.

John Cooper, member of the Red Dirt Rangers, will return to Diamondhead Resort in September for this year’s Diamond Stone music festival.

Relaxing at the lake is an affordable and fun way for families to enjoy time together outdoors. At Adair Park in Stil-well, a family reunion was in progress one recent sunny Saturday.

Lawn chairs were gathered under the shady canopy of tall trees, where adults shared food and conversation. A near-by playground keeps kids happy. A few boys and a dad were fishing.

“The kids like to feed the ducks and fish,” said Jennifer Rust, from Oklaho-ma City.

Nathan Lacie was among those at the family get-together. A cousin from Philadelphia was in town.

“The park is a convenient place. I like this today; it’s overcast and not too hot. There are a variety of things to do: feed the ducks and geese, throw a ball, and

[there is a] playground for the kids,” Lacie said.

It’s really clean and kid-friendly, said Deby Lacie.

“There’s not a lot of traffic since we’re off the highway, so you don’t have to worry about the kids,” Lacie said.

Cole Kennedy, who will be 13 in three months, was fishing from a dock.

“The water is too dark here in this spot; I’m going to another spot where the bluegill are spawning,” Cole said.

He visited the park on a school trip recently.

“I catch and release and get to hang out with friends,” said Cole. “I get to hang out with family and get to know them a little better, be better friends.”

Colt Lacie, 7, likes to catch big fish.“I caught one here, a big one. It’s fun

to fish and catch them, any size,” Colt said.

Also fishing was Devyn Kennedy, 9.

“I’ve been here a lot of times. I like to play with my family and I like to eat here. Sometimes we have small picnic,” Devyn said.

Cole added that he can be alone there with his family.

“It’s a nice place, pretty. It’s big but not always a lot of people here as you might think. You can camp here and rent for get-togethers,” he said.

Smay Lake is one name given to the body of water at Adair Park. While much of the river property in Adair County is on private land, there are public loca-tions along the Illinois River, and seven creeks: Evansville, Little Lee, Indian, Beaver, Caney, Ballard and Dripping Springs Branch.

Stilwell City Lake is a recreational area near Bunch. Within the county are portions of the Cookson Hills State Game Refuge and the Ozark Plateau National Wildlife Refuge, originally known as the Oklahoma Bat Caves Na-tional Wildlife Refuge.

Adair County is east of Tahlequah in Cherokee County next to the Arkansas border.

Whether it be on the water or on the shore, Fort Gibson Lake offers a variety activities for one person or a whole family.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages Fort Gibson Lake. The lake is located approximately 50 miles southeast of Tulsa. Fort Gibson offers a great getaway for outdoor activi-ties with 225 miles of shoreline ex-tending into Wagoner, Cherokee and Mayes counties.

“There’s kayaking, boating, wa-ter skiing,” said Darvin McClellan, a ranger at the lake. “There’s plenty to do, just depends on what you like.”

If fishing is your way to get out-doors, sportsmen will find black

bass, white bass, crappie and sev-eral varieties of catfish and panfish. It also offers an opportunity to snag paddlefish.

“We host the B.A.S.S. and the FLW tournaments,” McClellan said. “We will also be holding a national col-lege fishing tournament this year.”

The Corps manages six gated class A campgrounds, two primitive camping areas, and three day-use ar-eas with picnic sites.

An additional eight park areas are offered by the Corps with limited maintenance and services. Camping in undesignated areas is prohibited. Park attendants oversee fee collec-tion during the peak season, April 1 – Sept. 30.

the southwest end of the lake, and Sequoyah State Park on the oth-er side of the lake northeast of Se-quoyah Bay.

Both state parks offer nature trails, and an added feature at Sequoyah State Park includes riding stables and equestrian trails. Both parks also hold Fourth of July celebrations.

When spending any time spent outdoors, precautions need to be taken.

“We are advising people to use sunscreen,” McClellan said. “Be aware of shallow areas. Right now we are not having any problems with floating debris, but we still have some snags that have hung up when we got that five inches of rain a month ago.”

Kayaking is a fun way to spend an afternoon, particularly in summer-time. If smiles on the faces of kayak-ers aren’t enough to convince you just how fun this sport can be, perhaps statistics can convince you how en-joyable it is to paddle away in a kayak.

According to the Physical Activity Council, which each year conducts the largest single-source research study of sports, recreation and lei-sure activity participation in the Unit-ed States, recreational kayaking is the most popular paddlesport in the United States, attracting more than 11 million participants each year.

People who have never before been in a kayak may be intrigued by those statistics and tempted to follow the example set by millions of kayakers who take to the water every day when the weather permits. Safety should

be a top priority for all kayakers, and especially for novices. A kayaking course can be a great way for novic-es to familiarize themselves with the basics of kayaking, including the best practices in regard to staying safe on the water. Local watersports retailers and recreational organizations that take watersports enthusiasts out on the water may offer safety courses, and these courses can be great re-sources while also helping people get their feet wet before paddling away.

When kayaking for the firs time, it’s important that novices choose the right type of water for their experi-ence level. Rough, choppy waters can prove challenging to even the most skilled kayakers, and these same wa-ters can be deadly for novices. The following are some characteristics novice kayakers should look for in a body of water before pushing them-selves and their kayakers into the cur-rent.

• Size: Novices should avoid vast bodies of water, such as oceans, riv-ers or large lakes, until they gain more experience. Large ponds and small lakes can be great places to gain some experience and familiarize oneself with the nuances of paddling.

• Demeanor: Demeanor might not be a trait one normally associates with water, but looking at a body of water in this way can be a great way to determine if it’s the right place for a novice. If a body of water is raging, with choppy waters and rapid waves, then steer clear. If the water is calm, then it’s likely a safe spot for novices.

• Traffic: Novices may be intimi-dated by crowds, but other kayakers can serve as something of a safety net for novices. Kayaking is a fun group activity, and novice paddlers should never go it alone.

• Variety: Novices should steer clear of waters that allow power boats. Such vessels can alter paddling conditions

quickly, and that can put novices in potentially precarious positions. Stick to waters that allow only canoes or other boats that won’t affect water conditions.

• Access: Until they get more com-fortable in their kayaks, novice kayak-ers should stay close to shorelines so

they have quick and simple access to land should they struggle to get accli-mate to the water and being in a kay-ak.

Kayaking is a popular activity that even novices can enjoy, especially when they take certain measures to ensure their safety.

Winding through the corner of North east Oklahoma, the Illinois River and its tributaries are among our state’s most valuable natural resources. Their scenic beauty, positive economic impact and historical significance are widely recognized across the region and embraced by all those who live, work and play along the river’s edge.

The Grand River Dam Authority understands this and that is why our Scenic River Operations Team is at work, every day, to protect, enhance and preserve these waters.

Not only is that our mission, but also our passion. After all, we live, work and play here too.

For more information about the Illinois River and other waters of GRDA, visit us at www.grda.com.
