Several Greeley County 4-H and FFA Member exhibited their projects at the 2019 Kansas State Fair this past weekend in Hutchinson. As always, the Kansas State Fair is an opportunity for the “cream of the crop” from each County Fair to exhibit their current year’s work. Greeley County 4-H’ers with Arts & Crafts Exhibits on display at the Kansas State Fair are Payton Walk (Leather), Josey Schmidt (Drawing), and Annabelle Schneider (Beaded Jewelry). Greeley County also had several exhibit in the 4-H / FFA Grand Drive Livestock Shows. Kashen and Brecken Nelson exhibited Sheep and Goats. Hannah Harris and Kasen Felty exhibited Swine. Josey Schmidt exhibited Cattle. Josey was also selected to participate in the Legislative Beef Showmanship event. She met with Representative Susan Humphries from Wichita, KS. This event matches State and National Legislators with Kansas 4-H and FFA Members, giving them an opportunity to interact and showcase the 4- H and FFA Program as well as the Beef Industry here in the State of Kansas. Congratulations to all of the State Fair Exhibitors! ---Todd Schmidt, Extension Agent Greeley County Health Services will be hosting an area-wide Aging Expo event for Greeley and surrounding counties on Wednesday, October 2 nd beginning at 9am Mountain Time at the Greeley County Pavilion Ocie Room. “The goal of this event is provide some necessary education on aging topics for our communities such as Medicare, estate planning, nursing home placement, Alzheimer’s, etc. Aging is really something that families need to learn how to prepare for better, and we hope that GCHS can help provide some of that education,” Katy Reynolds, Chief Human Resources Officer said. The Aging Expo will consist of state-wide experts coming to present information on aging topics. Dixon Drug will present information on Medicare Part D plans; Clinkscales Elder Law Firm will come from Hays, KS, to educate on estate planning; the Area Agency on Aging will present information on understanding Medicare; and the Alzheimer’s Association will discuss healthy living and dementia. “As more of our population nears Medicare enrollment age or even Long Term Care placement age, it’s important for caretakers to have access to resources, information and help to navigate through the complexities of it all,” Reynolds said. Greeley County Health Services is sponsoring breakfast and lunch for attendees at the event. Community members are welcome to come and go as needed to get the information that is pertinent to them. Greeley County Health Services is passionate about helping patients understand the complexities of their health at every life stage, and utilizes different avenues to provide this education to the public. A couple of resources that GCHS makes available to all patients is Patient Financial Assistance and Prescription Assistance programs. These programs are coordinated by Connie Rupp who helps patients find resources related to health care and medication needs. Connie is located in the administrative offices next to the Greeley County Clinic, but also travels to Wallace County weekly to provide support to residents there. The Aging Expo is a free event. We will be doing it a little differently this year and hosting it on a Saturday evening, September 21 st , at 7pm in our Family Life Center! We will be serving a delicious meal and giving everyone a special gift! The newly added members will also receive a specialized Bible like the others in the former years. Everyone is Welcome! Let’s show our Local Heroes how much they are truly appreciated! J — There will be a Country Fresh Market this Thursday at 5:00 p.m. south of the library. There’s always something interesting…. **** J – This date is 9/11 – I am remembering that, on 9/11/2001, I was at home, getting ready for work, with the TV on. I glanced at it as I walked by, and then stopped and stared. The coverage of the twin towers being hit by airplanes was just beginning. I called Dan, who was already at the newspaper office, and told him I was going to stay and watch the news for a while. I remember feeling that it was unbelievable…but then I started remembering that there had been several bombings recently of various buildings, etc. When they showed the wall of dust and debris and people running to get ahead of it – it was like a disaster movie. That’s been 18 years ago now, but it still evokes unforgettable images and feelings in those of us who are old enough to remember. **** J — Between Greeley County Recreation, the Library, and the Senior Center, there are a lot of activities going on for every age! If you add the school events into that, it makes for a very full calendar! We try to keep up, but we are incredibly appreciative of those coaches who send us their information on sports games, and of coaches and parents who send us photos they take at the events. It makes it possible for us to continue to provide a local community newspaper with local news. So, if you’re at an event and have your phone, consider taking a picture or two and emailing them to us at [email protected] or newspaper@sunflowertelco. com. **** D The high school football game against Hoxie scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6 was cancelled. Tribune only has 8 players and 2 of them were unable to play on Friday. The game with St. Francis on Sept. 13 has also been cancelled. St. Francis was able to schedule another game. The Jackrabbits do plan to play at Atwood on Sept. 20. **** D — Congratulations to the Jr. High and High School volleyball girls on their recent wins. It seems that they may have stepped their game up a notch. And congratulations to the tennis girls on their continued excellence. **** D — Attitude does make a difference. It’s a lot easier to accomplish something if you believe. Can we win or are we faced with ultimate defeat. I find that the same issue is present everywhere. It’s a fractal. You can look at the team, the school, the community, the state, the nation, or the world. The view is the same. Belief does make a difference. Or course we just might have to replace some old structures in order to get there. **** D Tribune made Bloomberg news this past week. It was a story about Soloviev, his farming interest and the resurrection of the railroad west of Tribune. The railroad makes sense to me. I find it interesting that it took a Russian to have the view that it was worth saving. Attitude does make a difference. ****
