“Kalos oree-seteh”! That’s the Greek word for “WELCOME”. Literally, it means, “It is well that you are seen!” Taking to heart this literal meaning of the Greek word for “welcome”, we are saying that it is well for us to see you, knowing that you are healthy and happy. It’s an expression of caring LOVE in Greek. Welcome to our 2014 Greek Festival! We look forward to sharing our Greek culture with you and we hope that your visit with us is truly arewarding experience. At the same time, we hope that you take advantage of the many oppor-tunities over the course of the year and throughout the Coachella Valley to share in the cultures of the many people who have come together to make up our general community. As we live together, we here at St. George ask Christ our God for all those things that are truly beneficial to the souls and bodies of every citizen of our community at large. Our prayers must always translate into actions that are indeed good and beneficial to others. It is in this spirit that we grow to a greater understanding of the fact that we truly need one another. It is in this spirit that we treasure your attendance at our Greek Festival.

Yours in Christ’s Love,Fr. Theodore Pantels

Parish Priest, St. George Greek Orthodox Church

Dear Friends & Guests, On behalf of the Parish Council, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the St. George Greek Orthodox Church 18th Annual Greek Festival. Our annual Greek Festival allows every guest in attendance to be “Greek for a day”! We take pride in our Greek heritage and culture and want you to experience and enjoy our Greek cuisine, Greek music and dancing, and Greek fellowship. All of our food items and desserts are homemade from traditional family recipes that have their origins in Greece. We hope that you will take some time during your visit to learn

about our Orthodox faith by taking a guided tour of our beautiful church. If you have never been inside a Greek Orthodox Church please take advantage of this opportunity.

We are constantly striving to improve our annual Greek Festival based on input we receive from our guests every year. If you have any questions or suggestions, please share them with any of our many festival volunteers.

I would like to thank the many individuals and businesses that have made donations to make our festival a success. Extra thanks to our Greek Festival Chairman, George Argyros and to all of our volunteers

whose tireless efforts of time, talent, and treasure make this festival a great community event. Finally, thank you for attending our festival. We hope this is both an enjoyable and memorable occasion for you.

Ya’sou!Rhonda Latkovic, St. George Parish Council President

Best wishes for a successful

History About Orthodoxy Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism are the two old-est Christian faiths in existence. Until the year 1054, the two churches were united as the one and only Christian Faith. Both churches share the honor of true Apostolic succession: Eastern Orthodox through the Apostle Andrew and Roman Catholic by way of Apostle Peter. Worldwide, there are over 170 million members of the Orthodox faith and growing. The Orthodox liturgy practiced today has been tenaciously preserved in its original form for almost 2000 years. Here, at St. George the only difference is services are typically 80% English and 20% Greek. Many Orthodox churches are culturally different; Greek, Russian, Lebanese, Korean, Ethiopian, Japanese, Romanian..., but the faith is all identical-ly, Orthodox. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, with over 6 million members, is under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Ecumeni-cal Patriarch Bartholomew who is the 330th apostolic successor to the church founded in Constantinople by the Apostle Andrew. Church tours are offered during the Greek Festival several times a day.

Priests will be on hand to answer your questions.

We encourage everyone to take a church tour and enjoy the incredible beauty of our

award winning, Byzantine mosaic icons and experience a taste of Orthodoxy.

Wishing everyone aSuccessful 2014 Festival!

FLIPPED for FRAPPE’ (Greek iced coffee)Walking through the streets of any Grecian city, village, or sea side you often hear Greeks say, “Parakalo, Nescafé frappé me gala” (Coffee shaken with milk, please) Greece is known affectionately, as the “Frappe Nation” The Frappé (Φραπέ) is Greece’s favorite summer drink. During hot weather Athenians love to lounge at street side cafes, slowly sip a Frappé and people watch. Makes 1 glass

Ingredients• Instant coffee (preferably Nescafé®) -- 1 1/2 to 3 teaspoons• Cold water -- 2/3 cup• Sugar (optional) -- 2 to 3 teaspoons• Milk (optional) -- 1/4 cup• Ice cubes (optional) -- 2 to 3 eachMethod1. Add desired amount of coffee, sugar and 2-3 tablespoons of the water to a cocktail shaker or blender. Shake or blend until the mixture forms a thick and frothy foam.

2. Pour the foam into a tall glass and stir in the remaining water and the sugar, milk and ice cubes if desired.3. Drink with a straw and enjoy the cool, frothy, bubbly delight.

Variations: • Skétos: no sugar added. Can add Splenda• Métrios: medium-sweet (about 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar).• Glykós: sweet (2 to 3 teaspoons sugar).• Horis Gala: without milk.

Notes: The European version of Nescafé’s instant coffee is made in a way that encour-ages the formation of foam. Consequently you can’t make a Greek style Frappe from American instant coffee or fresh brewed coffee as well. In Greece, during the annual Barista Championships, we also have Frappe Free-Style Championship! It’s a bit of a Pop Culture phenomenon.

Please visit Chris at theFrappé Booth and ENJOY!

Beware: Before you know it you’ll be shouting “Opa”, breaking plates and Dancing Just like the Greeks!

Whether you choose to eat indoors or outdoors in our village center “Plaka”, or on the lawn in the “Taverna” courtyard, at the 18th Annual Palm Desert Greek Festival, hosted by Saint George Greek Orthodox church community; you’ll be sure to “Fall in Love with Greece.” Rain or Shine, the Festival is serving up the best food this side of the Aegean! Walk around and you’ll discover old Greek favorites with new tastes and lots of delicious “Mezedes” appetizers, Greek Salads, Spanakopita, Gyros and an expanded array of delicious grill items. All our dishes are made with loving hands, well prepared and priced to please you and your family. So as you start your food odyssey today, remember you’ll find lots of our “Philoxenia” hospitality everywhere. We hope to spoil you and help you discover the “Greek way of Loving Life”, all weekend long.

CALAMARI, served with a bit of “OPA!”Nothing more exemplifies the Greek Life than the Greek - Chicken of the Sea, Squid. A typical night out in Greece starts with good friends and crunchy, crisp, fried Calamari quenched with fresh, tart lemon. For the full effect, take a shot of Metaxa brandy and add some lively, Greek music. A must try item!

Start in the COURTYARD with Appetizers! Come experience the Greek tradition of the “Taverna”, known as a casual meeting place of Parea (friends) in every village. Famous for “Mezedes”(appetizers) like no other. Enjoy Spanakopita (Fillo layered with rich cheeses and fresh spinach), or Tyropita (triangular shaped cheese filled pastry puff), or Dolmathes (Grape leaves stuffed with delicately flavored meat & rice filling). All best enjoyed with Ouzo or Imported Greek Beer.

*Greek Style LAMB Chops*, Our St. George Signature, Dish.

We’re offering our Signature Lamb Chops. They’re tender, flavorful, and by far the best you’ll find anywhere this side of the Parthe-non. You’re not to be disappointed. Add Greek fries to your fare, served hot with Greek Seasonings, & feta. To be sure, you’ll LOVE ‘em! We guarantee these are the best, East of the Parthenon. So line up early, bring your date and prepare to wait a bit. It’s well worth it. You’ll LOVE ‘em!

GYROS, oh those GYROS! EVERYONE LOVES GYROS! By far, the most popular eatery! Be prepared to wait a few minutes for this one. Greeks proudly stake their claim for introduc-ing to the culinary world, GYROS, the savory lamb & beef strips wrapped in a pita. It’s served warm with juicy tomatoes, onions and

refreshing “Tzatziki” Greek yogurt, garlic & cucumber sauce. So you see, the Greeks invented wraps & rollups way before they became mainstream on menus. Come see George and his team and be sure to shout out, Yassous!

Courtyard GRILL- LOUKANICO and SOUVLAKI

This place is packed with its’ own long-standing fans. Our “Pistaria” grill has the absolute best “Loukanico” Greek sausage, and Souvlaki plates, this side of the Acropolis. Back by popu-lar demand, the crew is cooking up sizzling portions with your choice of Greek Style, Loukaniko or Souvlaki in either savory Chicken, Beef or Pork, served in a fresh pita with Kalamata ol-ives, feta cheese and a lemon wedge. Kali Orexi! (Good Eating!)

“KOUZINA” Dinner Platters

Always a crowd pleaser, try our authentic Greek Dinner Plat-ters or mix, match & share with our Ala Carte menu choices and

sides. It’s a variable feast, not to be missed. We are offering a heaping entrees of our Greek style chicken, Lamb, sizzling Sou-

vlaki in either Chicken, Beef or Pork, Pastitsio (baked maca-roni w/ beef filing and Romano cheese, topped with béchamel

sauce), Mousaka (layered and baked eggplant w/ beef filing and cheese, topped with béchamel sauce), Athenian Rice Pilaf, tender “Fassolakia”(Greek Style Green Beans simmered in Tomato/on-ions and oregano) Dolmathes (beef and rice filled grape leaves),

“Salata” a Greek Salad and a dinner Roll. Don’t forget to dance a little and make room for those heavenly Greek Pastries and Ouzo

later. PASTRIES

Oh, those heavenly pastries only the Greeks can make. That world famous Baklava layered fillo with Honey & walnuts. The rich smooth custard baked Galatobouriko, or the Kourabiethes, those melt in your mouth butter cookies dusted with powdered

sugar. The Melomakarona, honey cookies with a hint of orange and topped with chopped walnuts. The traditional Koulourakia

And people lose more weight and feel more satisfied on this type of diet, which is rich in healthy fats, than on a traditional low-fat diet, another Harvard study suggests. This cuisine also ranks high because of how it’s eaten, The Greeks often share small plates of food called mezes, having just a bite of meat along with low-cal, healthy Greek staples like fresh seafood, slowly digested carbs (beans, eggplant, or whole-grain breads), and small portions of olives and nuts. If you’re eating out, order grilled fish and spinach or other greens sautéed with olive oil and garlic. This dish gives you the anti-inflammatory combo of olive oil and greens with the blood-pressure-lowering effects of garlic.

**Disclaimer: Greek bououki is intended for ultimate

musical pleasure, and not for the faint of bouzouki heart. Bouzouki scales, bouzouki

smoke, bouzouki energy, ouzo, feta, tzatziki, skiladika and the bouzouki instrument itself,

in combination, have been known to cause manic bouzouki obsessive behavior.

Please treat the bouzouki with the respect it deserves.
