Panayiota, a 37-year-old illiterate housewife, leads a quiet life with her hus-band and their children in a modest neighborhood in Athens, Greece. To cope with the recession that has been affecting her family for some time, Panayiota for the first time in her life, finds a job as a cleaner in a shopping mall. Despite the ruthlessness of her work-environment, Panayiota breaks free from domestic monotony and gradually gains the respect she never had from her family. In 1955 a couple of prominent Greek Istanbulites adopt an orphan Greek girl from the town of their origin. They offer her a powerful family name and ensure her devotion. Iris, a teacher in her early forties who works at a Fine Arts School, assigns to her students an exercise on a Free Subject. It is a time when social behaviors and values are being called into question. The 20-year-old students are thrilled at the idea of being free to choose their own subjects. They create an “imagination fac-tory” that has no limits. After finding Iris’ lost cell phone, provocative Yorgos, bases his Free Sub-ject on his fictitious recreation of his teacher’s life.

The subject matter of the documentary is an ar-chaeological excavation in a mountainous village in the Peloponnese. Focusing on this excavation and the international team of archaeologists, the film addresses issues concerning the ways the past is intertwined with the present of a local community. Placed in the residential area of the village, the ex-cavation reveals a distant ancient past, while at the same time provides an eloquent example of a past being always present in the daily life of Gerakiotes. “1000m2 of time” is a documentary about our rela-tionship with the past.
