A lifeguard who teaches refugees how to swim, two blind people communicating through sculp-ture at the NPO “Lighthouse for the blind”, the preparation of the front page of a big coopera-tive newspaper, a Syrian cantor and musician, a Congolese feast at Lesvos. What do they all have in common? All these and many more are the pieces of the mosaic depicting a version of the contemporary Greek society characterized by solidarity, by the need to enhance coopera-tion and reflection on our lives in order to claim a more spiritual everyday life. However, at the same time, one can discern the loneliness of those who crave to find a life partner or a friend while fantasizing about an elsewhere. A whole world struggling to look onwards to the future.

The subject matter of the documentary is an ar-chaeological excavation in a mountainous village in the Peloponnese. Focusing on this excavation and the international team of archaeologists, the film addresses issues concerning the ways the past is intertwined with the present of a local community. Placed in the residential area of the village, the ex-cavation reveals a distant ancient past, while at the same time provides an eloquent example of a past being always present in the daily life of Gerakiotes. “1000m2 of time” is a documentary about our rela-tionship with the past.
