Dionysus- Who was he?
• Was the God of the Vine (the grapevine). He was also known as the God of Wine.
• He was the son of Zeus and the mortal woman Semele.
• He is the only God to have a mortal parent (who was his mother).
Dionysus-Why was he important?
• Dionysus invented wine and the art of cultivating grapes.
• Grapes were very important to the Greeks.
• The Greeks grew grapes in their rocky soil.
• The grapes were often made into wine.
Dionysus-What role did he play in the everyday life of the
Ancient Greeks?
• Dionysus was one of the most important gods in everyday Greek life.
• Many Greeks associated him with rebirth.
• For example, the grapevine dies each wither, and then is reborn each spring.
Dionysus-Are their any traces of this God still found
today?
• Many Greeks still celebrate the Festival of Dionysus.
• The Festival of Dionysus takes place during the spring, when the green leaves begin to grow on the grapevines.
