Fraternity & Sorority Life Awards On May 12, the Drexel fraternity and sorority community gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of our community over the past year. This year the awards look a little bit different. The three governing councils worked together to streamline the recognition process across the entire community and implemented community-wide awards, presented to the best of the best through the entire Greek community. In addition, some new awards were introduced, including the Order of Omega Award for Academic Excellence, the Khushbu Kheti Greek Week Spirit Award, Greek Advocate Award, Award for Excellence in programming, Greek Unity, and the Commitment to Community Service Award. Overall, the evening highlighted the growth of individuals, chapters and the community over the past year and challenged many to continue to strive for excellence in the upcoming year.

Twelve teams participated in the tournament and many other came to cheer on their friends. In the end, they raised $600 for their charities. Iota Nu Delta also hosted a volleyball tourna-ment. Greek FIRE participants honored at FSL Awards

Panhellenic Council to Bring New Sorority to Campus

MGC Spring BBQ Held on June 2, the Multicultural Greek Council BBQ included lots of food and snacks as well as fun activities sponsored by each chapter, such as a balloon toss, tie-dying, and other fun games. The event also featured tables for each chapter to share information about themselves to fellow Greeks and potential members.

T h e P a n h e l l e n i c Council voted in April to open for extension. This means that the campus is now open to allow a new PHC sorority to come to campus. The process of bringing a new sorority to campus is much different than the way fraternities and multicultural groups come to Drexel in the past few years. It is a specific process created by the National Panhellenic Confer-ence and followed by all NPC sororities and the campuses they are on. Below are the details of the how the process will be carried out at Drexel.

Two weeks ago, the official announcement of extension was posted in the NPC extension bulletin. From now until the end of Septem-ber, sororities can schedule exploratory visits to tour the campus, will review statistics and information provided by FSL, and will submit applications expressing their interest in coming to Drexel. The PHC Extension Committee comprised of an FSL staff member, the PHC president, and one alumni or undergraduate representative from each sorority will review the applications and select

three to come to campus to present during the winter 2011 term. Feedback from those presentations will be reviewed to select the group who will be asked to come to campus. The selected group will be announced during the spring term. The group would then colonized in the fall, winter or spring terms following the fall 2011 formal recruitment. For more information and to follow the progress of Drexel extension, please visit the FSL website at: http://www.drexel.edu/studentlife/fsl/extension.html

Greek FIRE: First-year Initiates Reaching Excellence is a programming series created for new members to compliment chapter new member education and prepare new initiates for success as Drexel students and as leaders in the fraternity and sorority community. Each participant at-tended a number of events and programs in the following areas: Greek community, health & risk management, sexual assault education, scholar-ship, service & philanthropy, culture & diversity, and campus community. The following newly-initiated sorority mem-bers were recognized for their completion of the program during this year’s FSL Awards:

• Pelin Kansu – Delta Zeta • Sandra Maerere – Delta Zeta • Diana Mitchell – Delta Zeta • Amanda Moser – Delta Zeta • Katie Porter – Delta Zeta • Samantha Wishart – Delta Zeta

Eleven members of the Drexel Community participated in an Alternative Spring Break trip lead by Adam Zahn of Sigma Phi Epsilon and sponsored by the fraternity. The group, along with faculty advisor Jay Tifone of Residential Living worked with Habitat for Humanity in Oak Ridge in the Smoky Mountain region of Tennessee. The group spent time rehabbing and renovat-ing the homes of families in need around different areas of Oak Ridge. The group learned about Habitat for Humanity's work in Tennessee and problems of inadequate, poverty housing in the US. While in Oak Ridge, the group had time to sight see in Knoxville, sample local barbecue favorites, and interact with one another during various reflection activities. The trip was a fantastic success, with much of the group acknowledging that seeing the smiling faces of the homeowners and getting to build relation-ships with other Drexel students were the highlights of the trip. Other fraternity and sorority members on the trip included: Chris Kasian, Ken Caccavale, Steven Squibb, Michael Sharkansky, Susannah Schoolman, Chelsea Murphy, Colleen Fitzsimmons, Jordan Gorcynzski, and Jaclyn Greenbaum.

This past spring break, the Interfraternity Council sponsored a trip to Atlanta, Georgia for a week of community service revolving around the historic 100 year flood of Atlanta. Our ASB trip was not your typical week of community service, as we worked with six different non-profit organizations and community groups on a number of different projects. Projects taken on during the week included laying down fresh pine and mulch at the Martin Luther King Jr. Park, organizing and filling orders for a local tool bank, painting rooms at a local church and foster home, putting together and delivering orders of furniture at a local furniture bank, renovating a local community garden, and working with a local Head Start program to hold activities for children at the grand

BY SHAMS NAIM opening of their center. Outside of service, participants also had an opportunity to learn about the community they were directly influencing during the various projects. Each project coordinator, as well as local politicians and Americorps personnel spoke daily to the students about the value of the service being done, the goal behind the work being conducted, and the progress thus far. When reflecting on the week, the group's biggest takeaway was the friendships and teamwork built throughout the week. An-drew Cebulski of Alpha Pi Lambda, a trip participant, commented "ASB Atlanta was filled with many diverse opportunities to help the community complemented by our diverse group of volunteers. Our group became a family with a lasting trust and friendship." Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity also sponsored an ASB trip to Tennessee.
