    The owl is not found on any other Cyzicenecoin.Apparently t was suggestedas a type by the Atheniancoins,though t is difficult o explainthe additionofthestars.     An Alexandrinetetradrachmof the Rhodian mint,forming variety of those describedby Mller{Num.(fAlex.,Nos. 1154 1167). Mller'scoins are of hisClassY I. (after eirc.b.c. 200), but this specimens ofearlierstyle, and appearsto belongto ClassV., b.c. 250- 200. The chief nterest f our specimenies,however,in its havingbeenutilised for currency n Crete. TheLondon coin-dealerfrom whom the British Museumobtained t was informed hat it was found in Creteand, apart from, his information, e should have nohesitationn connectingt with hat island,on accountofits bearing,as a countermark, he labyrinth, he well-knowntype of the Cretancityof Cnossus.21Beforethistetradrachm ameto light, there was alreadysomeevi-

    That the portrait s that of Pharnabazushimself, ndnot, s some writers avemaintained,n idealisedffigy fthe King of Persia, may now be regardedas certain,especiallyince the publication f M.Babelon'svaluablemonograph n Satrapalcoinage.24It seemsclearalso2othat the issuing of money by Pharnabazusand other

    satrapswas not a

    privilegeinherent n their

    ordinarygovernmentalunctions,ut an exceptionalnd occasionalincident f their position s military ommanders. '

    Dr. J. P. Six hassuggested26hatthe stater f Pharna-bazus now under considerationwas issuedby Cononnb.c. 395for hepayment f his fleet,whichwasblockadedin the portofCaunusin Caria,by Pharax, n 396 andwasdeliveredn 395byPharnabazus,whocametoConon'saidandsuppliedhimwithmoney.27 hehead ofPharnabazus,
