The Greek history can be traced back to the Stone Age Hunters

There were only a few historians in the time of Ancient Greece

Examples:• Herodotus• Thucydides• Xenophon The Greek Civilization was divided into many periods.Examples:• Neolithic Period (6000 - 2900 BC) • Early Bronze Age (2900 – 2000 BC)• Minoan Age(2000 - 1400 BC )• The Dark Ages(1100-750 BC)• Archaic(750-500 BC)• Classical(500-336 BC)• Hellenistic(336-146 BC) In short, the chronology for the Greek Civilization is from

Two well known city states named Athens and Sparta, these two famous city states were rivals.

The strengths of these two cities brought these ancient civilization to its height in art, culture and with the defeat of the Persians, warfare and many other wars, which they most won.

The Athenian politics which is called The Tyrants consist of three main groups called Men of the Shore, the Men of the Plain and the Men from Beyond the Hills.

Athens was found by Theseus and Sparta was found by Lycurgus.

Divided into many small areas called city-states Each city-state has its own government with

Athens as the largest city state It was ruled by a few wealthy men, as time

progressed, they moved towards democracy(ruled by the people-vote on who wants to be the leaders)

In Athens, People were divided into three groups: Upper class, middle class and lower class

Only men who were born in Athens were allowed to vote. They did this at public assemblies where upper class citizens discussed laws that might benefit Athens. These assembly meetings often got very noisy and led to many arguments between the men who were there

AS far back as the stone age, many Greeks were sailors and sailed all over the Eastern Mediterranean

They found lots of way to make a living from sailing

Some of them were fishermen, and ate some fish and sold some in markets

Other Greeks were traders, who bought things at one port and sold them at another port, and made some profit for themselves along the way

Other Greeks were soldiers for their city-state, who conquered other cities and forced them to pay tribute

Many Greek sailors worked as mercenaries, hiring out themselves and their ships to fight for other countries like Egypt

Other Greeks were pirates, who simply raided wherever they could and took whatever they could get

Mainly broken up between Free people and Slaves Owned by the free people. Slaves were used as servants and

labourers, without any legal rights. Sometimes the slaves were prisoners of war or bought from foreign slave traders. Although many slaves lived closely with their owners, few were skilled craftsmen and even fewer were paid

Free men were divided between Citizens and Metics. A citizen borned with Athenian parents is the most powerful group, that could take part in the government of the Polis. After compulsory service in the army they were expected to be government officials and take part in Jury Service. A metic is a person of foreign birth that had migrated to Athens, to either trade or practice a craft

Metic had to pay taxes and sometimes required to serve in the army, could never achieve full rights of a Citizen, neither could they own houses or land and were not allowed to speak in law courts

The social classes applied to men only, as women all took their social and legal status from their husband or their male partner. Women in ancient Greece were not permitted to take part in public life

Second half of the 5th century BC, signs of weakening of the Greek society appeared, due to the slave exploit, the pauperization of the small producers etc.

Another grave phenomena was the Peloponnesian war. It’s called like this because it was organized by the states of the Peloponnesian League, led by Sparta, against Athens

Main cause was the old rivalry between Sparta and Athens. Another cause was the fight for the road to Sicily, one of the granaries of the old world, road controlled by the states of the Peloponnesian League

Page 10: Greek Civilization Power Point

Another cause was the wish of the states from the Maritime League-that supported the Peloponnesian League- to escape from the hegemony of Athens, that became. This wish was supported by Sparta.

The war took 27 years, but the fights lasted until 4 BC. Athens capitulated and was forced to give up its hegemony, its fleet and to tear down the "long walls", in the sound of Spartan music, to have the same friends and enemies like Sparta.

fights for hegemony and for the formation of big political organizations proved that state-cities no longer could face the historical necessities. Of this situation, of general decay of Greece, will profit the young slave state Macedonia.
