Running is never going to die. This purest of sports is perhaps the simplest but most beneficial of human

endeavors. It can be done solo at the drop of the hat or as a social gathering second to none. In these dire

times, it is one of the few activities that still gives us the freedom to breath, while enhancing our

physical health. While many of our stress relieving choices have been curtailed, for now, running is

likely the most powerful coping force in many of our lives.

For most of this century, I have been involved in running with race management, running clubs, and

racing. Using the term with its original meaning, I have been dressed in running apparel virtually every single day. I would be hard pressed to find a shoe in my closet that was not designed for running.

Running shirts are de rigueur and I have hundreds to choose from. When I enter a room, people are

reading the name of a race on my shirt or hat. That evokes memories of that past race and time like a

special friend. Three seasons of the year, I can be found in running shorts. Sweatshirts, tights and

running jackets and pants keep me warm in the fourth. Virtually - there is that word again – everything I wear comes from a running store or a race.

Even while much of my interest in running in driven by racing which is on an extended hiatus, I still

need running apparel to survive. After the grocery store and the gas station, the running store is the most

important place on my shopping list. I could most likely survive on just those three entities. Remember

that small businesses are the ones that are most hard hit by the current crisis. As important as they are,

running stores are small businesses. Potomac River Running (=PR=) has long been one of the leaders in the industry. Runners have a symbiotic relationship with =PR= and its services. We need them

as much as they need us to survive and our continuing support of them is essential. We eagerly look forward to the day when racing is back in full.

    *****************

Realistically, racing is done for 2020. It will return. While optimism can be a powerful tool and runners

are loath to give-up hope, it seems unlikely that any real racing will be done. Smaller races started

cropping up on mid-June hoping to supplant the “virtual” race. Neither are truly about the competition

and are just an attempt to stay connected with racing, and with other runners. Every run you do could be

labeled a “virtual event.” Wave start races are time trials at best. Most races of any size have been

canceled through the end of the year. Others are slowly following the tides of time, rippling into

“virtual” events to help maintain their presence. We cannot let them wither and die.

The Runner Rankings have been going on since the mid-80s. However, extensive records only exist

back to 2005. With that in mind, we are creating the “Greatest of all Time” rankings (2005-2020) called

THE ERA. For now, the rankings will include the champion, as well as the fastest race for each division,

and the top ten runners in each of the divisions (top twenty-five for the Open Division), as well as, the

top ten runners in totals races (in which they were ranked) by division. Given the period of time used,

some runners will qualify in as many as four different divisions.

This ranking will be culled from the more than two hundred and thirty thousand times a ranked race was

recorded. There were 8.2 million times a runner toed the line. Women hold an edge with just fewer than

121, 000 ranked events versus men at just fewer than 110,000 ranked events. Women hold the edge is

qualifiers with 100,842 to 97,731. Both the men and women’s 60-64 divisions are the largest, just ahead

of both their Open division counterparts. For comparison, we have also listed the top five races as well

as the hundredth best for the age groups. For the open division, in addition to the top five, we have listed

    the top 100, 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000th event

The data base is static. This allows for other statistics to be developed. Over time, we will be able to go

deeper into the list. (There are thousands of runners in nearly every division). Later we can list: The age

graded best, the best race by distance in each division, and the most wins by division. These statistics

will be able to determine the most popular events as well as the fastest/most competitive events.

Be safe, be strong, knowing that racing will be back full strength.

To help explain the table, take for example the 85-89 women’s division. Twenty-nine runners (Total of Ranked Women) among themselves combined to race 551 times (Women Ranked Races of qualifiers). Two hundred and three runners (Total Women’s qualifying racers) means that 348 (551-203) women ran just one race at a ranked time and did not qualify.

We are posting in blue all the runners with National Class times (80%) and in purple for all runners with World Class times 90% based on their best time in 10K equivalence. The time standards are based on the youngest in each division except for the 19 and younger, where it becomes the eldest time, which is for the strongest time. In the past, the division champions received their age grading based on their 10K equivalent. However, each race distance has a different age grading that does not always match up with the expected 10K equivalence. Also, we are now basing on their actual age as well as the actual distance they ran. Also, runners from 2010 and before have their grading processed from the 2010 standards. Thus, it is possible for an older runner in the same division to have a better age graded event than the champion. There will be some runners who are up to the 80% level by being on the older side of the 5-year division that get missed. However, in this manner, everyone in blue will be at least 80%. The age listed for the runners is the age the runner ran their best age graded event. In some cases, their best race occurred at a different age compared to their 10K equivalence time* listed to the right. Below is the 10K equivalent time one need to race to get a National Class ranking and the 10K you need to race a World Class time. The runner’s time is based on the prevailing scale at the time they ran the race. The table refers to a 10K run by the youngest age of an age

group. For example, a 5K run by a 59-year-old will be much better than the equivalent 10K time run by a 55-yer-old.

Champion Abiyot Endale has the fourth and fifth fastest 10Ks run in Maryland when he improved on his Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 2011 at 28:19 to 28:16 the following year. That moved him up to second place in that race but THE ERA’s top racer never did win that race in four tries. His third best race there was in 2010 at 29:14 for ninth place. Third ranked Mesfin Nahom won it all at Pike’s Peek in 28:30 to nearly edge fourth ranked Tim

Young who ran Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 47:45. Five years later, Young still possessed the goods, covering the same course (minus 80 meters) in 47:40. Nahom next best race was the 45th best. Runner-up Demesse Tefera won it all at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 47:30. James Kipketer had run his 10 miler in 47:18 but fell one race short of qualifying. Tefera won nearly a third of his 62 events to an overall win (22). He produced nine events below 30:00 in 10K equivalence. He also had two sub 29:00 10Ks. Thirteenth ranked Gurmessa Megerssa was tops with more than half of 122 races as number one (66). His best race was runner-up at the Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:04:27, the 40th best race. Tesfaye Sendeku had three Army races at sub 48:00, including two wins but like Kipketer he only completed four races. In quick order at Pike’s Peek, eighth ranked Josef Tessema was fourth in a matching 28:46 with third place Kipketer. The year before, ninth ranked Tariku Boran was fourth in 28:48 to best tenth place Birhanu Alemu Feyussa (28:55)… three places back. Striding in front of these three is seventh place Wilson Komen who ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 47:58, while busting 20 sub 31:00 events. A small step in front of him comes sixth ranked Girma Gebre who cranked the two best halves. He was best at the American Family Fitness Half Marathon in 1:03:34. Fifth ranked Sean Keveren was tops in 2017 but had his best race two years earlier with the fastest 8K, the HCA in 22:41. Eleventh ranked Steve Hallinan busted the fastest 5K with a rare sub 14:00 sighting. He was second at the Baltimore United Way 5K in 13:54 losing a photo finish by one second. Chris Kwiatkowski cracks the top dozen with a fine Army 10 Miler in 48:17.

As with Belainesh Gebre for the women, Ezkyas Sisay arrived in 2007 to take over the teen division. She was 19 and moved on to the open division as champion in 2008. Sisay was 18 but saw no reason not to take over the open division in 2008 as well becoming a rare two division champion. He was in the money in all but one of his 24 events, winning 12 of them outright. His only “loser” was pacing Gebre to a win at the hilly Home Run 10K in 34:37. He finished seventh in a star studded field, the likes that race will never see again, which included three former champions, who all lost to Alene Reta’s 29:30. Sisay was a master of the half

marathon, winning in Williamsburg and Washington, DC and finishing second at the Parks race. The following spring, he ran against a world class field, finishing seventh in 1:04:38, ahead of THE ERAs champion Abiyot Endale (1:05:26). During this period there were a lot of African racers just passing through who either did not stay long enough to become local or ran too few races to qualify. Graham Bazell laid down the 20th best time and it earned him the runner-up spot by finishing the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 51:41 to crash the vaunted top 25 of that event. The next five racers all had one stupendous race that was mostly followed by much more modest outcomes. Third ranked Chase Osborne ran his first of four sub 5:00 pace 5Ks, the Coast Guard 5K to victory in 15:08. Fourth place William Jones also stayed true, finishing second at the Across the Bay 10K in 31:32 before winning it all the following year in 33:44. Parks Half Marathon 1:10:16 31:53 2010 Wardian, Michael Edmund Burke seems a lock with three of top four events, all bests at major distances. Still, Wardian was not too far back of Burke’s 30:04 at Pike’s Peek with his 30:23. Burke’s Great Allegany is a bit of an outlier as it is a point to point 660 drop off of Mount Savage. Still, Burke’s Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 50:16 is a minute faster than Wardian’s best in 2011. But remember, Wardian is a six-time champion at the National Marathon. He won that event in 2011 with 2:23:01 just a week before the 10 miler. Burke boasted four wins in his 21 events with 10 of them earning bonus points. But Wardian, he’s everywhere! He’s everywhere! Wardian piled on 23 wins with 30 of them gaining bonus points in his 74 events. Using their best five races, Wardian wins with a Moreland Racing Factor of 123 to Burke’s 74. Using their best 15 races, Wardian prevails and wins the title, 308 to 223. Third ranked Chris Sloane ran a superb Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 50:27 lodged between Burke’s best and his second best (50:46). Sloane has only one year in grade with a dozen events but already bested Girma Tola, 14:45 at the Chick Fil-A 5K, with his 14:41 at the Clarendon Day 5K. Fifth ranked Tola only ran six events but he won four times including at the Race for a Cause 8K in 24:08. Fourth ranked Will Christian also raced sparingly, so far with just nine events. While his best race, an overall win at the Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 1:07:15, his win at the Parks Half Marathon in 2018 with 1:10:06 was slower than Sloane’s win the following year in 1:08:10.

It is really tough to select a champion when eleven of the top fourteen races are run by different players. Third ranked Stephen Chantry owned four of those times. His best race was the Ntelos 8K in 27:02. Mark Malander is the champion, running the Pike’s Peek 10K in 34:01, the year after Chantry won it in 34:25. Ninth ranked Dan Lawson had run 34:29 the year before that. Runner-up Steve Kartalia was tops at the US National Road Racing Championships 12K in 41:46. He would add two second overalls at the significantly hilly Bachmann Valley Half Marathon in 1:16:23. Only fourth place half marathon specialist Doug Fernandez ran a faster half. He was top master at the flat Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:15:31. The king, Chuck Moeser, had run out of worlds to conquer and raced sparingly. He had one special event the Outback Steakhouse in 26:58 to take fifth place. Then he spent all of 2005 resting on his laurels and saving up for the next age group. Olympic class racer from the past century Dave Shafer, 2:20:28 at the 1983 Maryland Marathon, and Tom Stevens, 2:19:41 at the 1992 Trials, drifted back into the pack. It ain’t bragging if you can do it and Chuck Moeser could do it. The last Sunday in April of 2007 was the huge grandmaster showdown at the DARCAR Pike's Peek 10K. Moeser had already improved on his April Fool’s Day massacre at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 58:12 to win the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 57:35 stamping paid to the division, setting the Virginia state record. A week later, the Tidewater Region sent up its finest to challenge Pike’s Peek and their excellent times at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K. Moeser hosed the field in a stupendous 33:47. Rick Platt was next in 35:21, faster than his Ukrops 10K (35:34). He was just ahead of Maurice Pointer, then 51, in 35:33. Pointer was third in the 50-54 with Stephen Chantry, then 52, home in 34:23 and Jim Bates, then 51, in 34:59. Forty grandmasters were faster than 44:00 that morning. Runner-up Pointer was marvelous winning the Check it Out 8K in 27:27 as the second of seven runners with World Class times. Half Marathon man Doug Fernandez was a three-time winner at the Patrick Henry Half Marathon as well as three times at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K. His fastest race was the American Family Fitness Half Marathon in 1:16:56, moving him into third place in THE ERA.

Five members of the 50 Plus Club were in the top six in events raced with the top four having more than 200 events. A sixth member, Patrick Griffith combined quality with quantity to capture the number three position. Back in 2005, he set the 60-64 record at DARCAR Pike's Peek 10K in 37:06. In 2007, he lost that record to fifth ranked Mike Hazilla (37:00) and lost his 55-59 record to Chuck Moeser on the very same day. Hazilla was a shooting star, racing to four wins, twice at Pike’s Peek and twice at Cherry Blossom, and then he was gone. Griffith raced 72 times from 2005-06, sweeping nine straight seasons before retiring (from work) to Florida. He blasted the Fairfax Corner 5K in 17:51 and that course is rolling. In 82 events, he only finished second twice, Hazilla at Pike’s Peek in 2007 and later that spring at Apple Blossom to seventh ranked Jason Page. Only past National record holder ranked Tom McCormack (17:31 in 2014), who ran sub 17:40 for three straight years, and runner-up Maurice Pointer who was close at the Renie Amoss Road Race 5K in 17:40 were better than Griffith’s 5K. McCormack from neighboring Tennessee ran the Christopher Todd Richardson Memorial 10K in 37:08 and added a fine 5K at the Railroad Days 5K in 17:49, just his fifth best 5K. Still, it was at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion 5K, in a city of two states with the state line running down Main Street, that McCormack, who had just turned sixty, set his first National Record in 17:32 to win THE ERA. That is until you consider his 15th overall at the US National Road Racing Championships 12K in a record 42:55, just one second behind the women’s winner Perry Shoemaker who was a mere 18 years younger than him. The following year he reprised with an excellent 43:04. McCormack was the overall winner twice and second overall four times in his six 5K races, all

The top three racers were crazy close. Bill Joyce posted top times at Army (1:06:09) and Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M (1:06:37) in the same year. A half a dozen years later, third place Mick Slonaker was ever so close at the shortened 15.1K Cherry Blossom in 1:02:28. Slonaker boasted his best 5K at Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 19:56 and 7 bonus point races. Joyce, who was champion in 2009, picked up 11 bonus point races. Middle distant racer extraordinaire Jason Page scored his best event as the Stop the Silence 8K in 31:39. He was a bullet with the 5K, racing the DCRRC after the Women 5K 19:16 for the top 5K. He also owned 2010 and 2011 and with his record 26 bonus point events that gives him the crown for THE ERA. Page and Jim Noone would have some epic battles in the following two years with Noone prevailing to win both of those years. Noone filled the fourth slot with his best race at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:08:10. Marathoner Ronnie Wong ran 17 local marathons in his 157 events, three more events than Noone, although Wong would run scores more races. He would also run 60 more marathons all around the world and has run a marathon in every state. Lou Shapiro led the way with 199 events and was top dog in 2008. Richard Stotlar owned 2012 with four of the top six times overall. He plunked down an unbeatable Run for Your Life 5K in 19:57. Gerry Ives was probably most famous for his battle with the legend Fay Bradley at the 1996 Cherry Blossom, succumbing 59:20 to 59:28. Bradley is famous for being one of seven racers to run under their age when he ran the 1998 event in 58:58 at age 60. Ives produced the best 10 miler for the division in his 17th of 18 Cherry Blossoms in 1:11:31. Ives was the best of 2010 and 2011. Runner-up Jim Noone rushed by Ives to give him the news, winning at the National Press Club 5K in 20:20. Noone made a near sweep of the division, winning the best of the year in 2014-15 and 2017-18. Seventh ranked Ben Dyer took honors in 2016. Noone was one of four runners with more than 100 events. Chan Robbins was the most prolific racer with 163 events. Fifth place John Elliott had the fastest 5M at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 34:43. The most recent (2019) winner of the year, Jim Wright, did his damage with the fastest half marathon, winning Parks in 1:35:59 to take fourth place. With nine of these men capable of running a sub 50:00 10K and five collecting lots of bonus point races, the competition was fierce. Still, Ben Dyer had four of the top six times, including the TCRR Race for the Cause 5K in 22:58 to cap the division crown. Amiable Skip Grant owned all of 2011 and was best for 2012 as well. He did his damage at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 48:17 and 48:47 respectively. Fifth place George Yannakakis was second there in 2011 in 51:36. At age 79, he graded better than Grant and better than 12 of his own races at the front part of this division. Third place John Elliott used his age graded friendly 5Ks to take his spot, running the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 23:14. He was best of 2014. Noone was right behind him timewise, running the Run with Dad 5K in 23:18. That race helped Noone win all of 2019, snatching away Dyer’s bid for two consecutive years as champion. Bob Gurtler set the virtually unbreakable standard with 510 events ranked. That is just short of the total of the next four racers combined. As runners age into the 80s, every year the age grading becomes more severe. John Hosner displayed the best race overall at 82. While George Yannakakis was a mere eleven seconds behind that race with his Veterans Day 10K in 52:49, he holds the fifth best age graded time as he was a mere whippersnapper of 80. The others were at least a year older. Hosner offered twelve more sweet 5Ks but his second best was behind a half dozen Yannakakis events as well as three races run by John Clarke. Third place Clarke shines brightly at the five-mile race, his best being the Germantown 5 Miler in 42:32. Yannakakis commands a crushing Moreland Racing Factor more than twice as powerful as any other racer. He was best of the year five times only losing three separate seasons in that time. There is no doubt that he has earned the championship. Among his 109 events, there were ten different distances that he had the division’s fastest time. Bob Gurtler exhibited a momentous 178 races, 50 percent more than Jack McMahon (119). McMahon took fourth place with a sparkling PVTC Easter Classic 5K in 26:07. Eight of these titans ran 25 or more events led by Dixon Hemphill with 61, notwithstanding that Hemphill races many shorter track events as well. George Yannakakis waltzed through the division winning every season but one in his first three years in the division. He also owned the fastest race of six different distances. His best race was the Pike’s Peek 10K in 59:36. Twenty-five years ago we were told that there was a runner that preferred hunting but when he came out to race was unbeatable. John Hosner takes the division with five of the top eight times, all fast 5Ks. His best, the Vinton Baptist Church Dogwood 5K in 27:18 was two minutes faster than his sixth best in 29:26 that matches Yannakakis exactly.

Charlottesville 8K in 25:34. Third ranked Keira D’Amato will be gunning for that time and has already raced an 8K in 25:59. That is the fourth fastest 8K behind seventh ranked Susanna Sullivan’s 25:57 at the HCA 8K. Tatyana Petrova ran 25:58 at Shamrock but only had three events during THE ERA. D’Amato, now a submaster, is a co-favorite with Beth Sachtleben to move up another notch. D’Amato’s Jingle All the Way 15K in 32:24 matched Sachtleben’s Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 53:40 exactly as the fastest events. D’Amato has not run that race since 2017 and can be expected to demolish her 1:04:40 time by at least ten minutes. Sachtleben had the fastest 10K save for Petrova, running the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 32:38. D’Amato ran well in 33:37. Expect her to knock about two minutes off that time. Fourth ranked Julie Culley had a sensational 15:34 at the Baltimore United Way 5K for the third fastest race. You have to go more than fifty places to the next 5K. That was a 16:09 run by D’Amato at the First Day 5K. With no races happening during the pandemic, D’Amato blasted a 15:04 time trial in mid-June, signaling that she is through with the 16s. Fifth ranked Serena Burla ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 15.1K in 50:18. Eighth ranked Claire Hallissey had four money making finishes at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M with a best (54:37) in 2012 for fifth overall. She tied Sullivan for the most overall wins with 41. Ninth ranked Samia Akbar marveled the ten-mile race with an overall win at Army (55:25) and George Washington Parkway (56:02) and a seventh place overall at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 54:46. Sixth ranked Etaferahu Temesgen out leaned Sullivan at the 2014 Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 54:30 to 54:31. Tenth ranked Kerri Gallagher raised the trophy at the heralded Army ten miler in for three straight years. She improved from 56:09 in 2012 to 54:56 in 2013 to 54:50 in 2014. Eleventh ranked Emily Ward turned in her fastest race at the American Family Fitness Half Marathon in 1:12:23 for the fastest half marathon of THE ERA. Her 16:37 at the Governor’s Land 5K at 16 age grades better than Gebre, including both her slightly faster 5Ks. Indeed, even one year different for 18-year-old Rachel Byrd makes her Westchester Shamrock 5K in 16:44 slightly higher age graded than Gebre as well. It grants her third place. Even younger racers with slower times get a huge lift by expected age grading. Fourth ranked Bonny Turnage is World Class with her 16:55 win at the Toys for Tots 5K. So too is 12-year-old Reagan Exeley with her overall win at the Melanmore 5K in 17:28.

Baltimore Half Marathon 1:20:01 36:09 2008 Orlova, Elena Julia Roman-Duval did everything right when she aged up. When she went out of town to race, she always brought back lots of cash. Her times plummeted. She won 22 of her 23 races with 15 overall wins locally. That “loss’ at Lawyers Have Heart was only because of ten-year age groups and it was her 20th best race (35:59). She would go on to win seven seasons in a row but her time was limited. Ahead of her at Lawyers, Keira D’Amato was awakening and had run an excellent 33:53 at age 34. D’Amato was like Perry Shoemaker; she was getting better with age. When she arrived in 2013, she was running 41:00 10Ks. Five years later, she had dropped to 34:00. Now 35, she hosted the three best races to roar past Roman-Duval who is also still improving. Roman-Duval offered her best race in 2020 at the Martel Half Marathon in 1:14:58. D’Amato won the HCA 8K in 25:59. D’Amato has run the fastest submaster 5K in Virginia with her First Day 5K in 16:09 to start this year. That is after racing the fastest race of The ERA in December at the Jingle All the Way 15K in 49:50. While other make use this pandemic to rest of her laurels, D’Amato took to the track and exploded the regional universe with a mindboggling 15:04 5K time trial, the seventh fastest American submaster time…ever. Top submaster Elena Orlova edges past fifth ranked Serena Burla who on special race, the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 27:14, ran by far her best race of just three. Orlova also passes fourth ranked Maria Elena Calle with three big wins at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K with her best time in 34:19. Orlova was tops at Pike’s Peek in 34:26. Calle won 2011, while Orlova won 2008-09. Calle enjoyed 12 overall wins and Orlova produced a massive 34. Orlova was tops with Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek in 34:26, while Shoemaker was starting her dynasty with back to back to back wins at Army, best in 2015 with 57:31. She went for first age group, to masters winner, and on to second overall. Orlova always displayed

blistering 5K speed and led the way to her title with the Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in 16:37. Third ranked Peggy Yetman had done the masters win twice at Army. Then a month before her best race, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 58:47, she showed Shoemaker the ropes at the Reston 10M, winning it all, 1:00:15 to 1:00:47 to earn her second year (2013). She had leapfrogged Orlova’s 2010 to win in 2011 and Orlova climbed back up to win in 2012. Shoemaker took command for 2014-15. When Shoemaker aged up Barb Fallon Wallace took over for 2016-17. Former Olympic class in the 800M and master indoor mile record holder Alisa Harvey was suited for the middle distance, winning it all at the Inspire Victory 5K in 17:08. However, Harvey was synonymous with winning at Army as well. She also won her age group, the masters, and when she won it all at the 2006 Army 10 miler in 59:00 she also set the masters record. That race earns her fourth in the division. National Class status (80%) = 39:03 World Class status (90%) = 34:42 * Fastest race but with a lower age grade

Richmond Marathon 3:00:02 38:29 2011 McGee, Gina Ramilia Burangulova did as well as one can do with just three events. She finished first, second, and third overall at the half marathon. Her Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:16:11 was the fastest race in the division. Her Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 1:17:40 was even better as she was four years older. Yet, there is no way anybody was going to stop the Perry Shoemaker steamroller. Shoemaker gets faster every year. Of the top thirty-one races Shoemaker owned 26 of them, Burangulova three. Shoemaker won eleven of the sixteen seasons while taking time out to run a 2:43:00 marathon at the Olympic Trials. She dominated all four years in the division. Three of four best races came in 2019, including an Army 10M triumph in 57:43 that was a virtual tie with her 57:30 on the Cherry Blossom course that was eighty meters short. In 2015, she won a season in the Open division. In 2018, Jennifer Maranzano finished second behind Shoemaker at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 58:56 to 1:00:39, to take the bronze. Barb Fallon Wallace ran the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 29:19 to take fourth place. In fifth place, Alisa Harvey won four years, 2010-13, 2015 and nearly pulled off a sweep. She always did major damage at Army, winning it four times with a best of 1:01:56.

Third place Leisa Villani raced 13 half marathons successfully but her best race that helped win her the title for 2008 was the Yorktown Battlefield 10 Mile in 1:04:50. Fourth ranked Deedee Loughran was the winner all five years at the Leesburg 20K but she had her best race at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 2013 in 39:19 behind Conant’s 38:45. National Class status (80%) = 45:33 World Class status (90%) = 40:29 Cindy Conant tried the downhill Great Allegany 15K twice, breaking an hour both times. Still, her Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:04:09 between the two 15Ks was just as fast. She was the overall winner in 26 of 70 of her races. She finished in the top three overall 22 more times and never lost her age group. The top six runners all ran World class times. Runner-up Deedee Loughran excels at the longer distances, racing 21 of her 51 events 10 mile or longer. She owned the fastest 20K, half, and full marathon. Her best race was the Leesburg 20K in 1:22:38. The following year she returned to win it all there. Third ranked Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico tied fourth place Kendall Tata with the second most overall wins (14). Castillo-D'Amico produced the second fastest 5K at the Crapolfest 5K in 19:21, behind Conant’s 19:05 at the Capitol for a Day 5K but ahead of Loughran’s Reston Firecracker 5K in 19:25. That was the only time in the top twenty-five not owned by the top two titans. After that, Tata produced a fine second overall finish at the Fall Foliage 10K in 40:50.

All fifteen of these great runners had similar age grade numbers. However, the shorter distances are easier to get those times, especially the 5K. That makes Deedee Loughran’s win even more impressive because she is the master of the half marathon. She performed the top race, the Leesburg 20K, in 1:32:56. Her best half in 1:39:57 matched her blazing Run for the Parks 10K in 45:49. Four years earlier on that very same course, runner-up Chris Craun had the division’s fastest 10K, winning the Veterans Day race in 45:02. On an even faster course, Naomi Stanford captured third place with her Clarendon Day 10K in 45:16. However, the Run! Geek! Run! 8K produced back in West Potomac Park in 35:45 produced an even better age grading. In this fullest of divisions, these ladies like to race. Carolyn Harrison was tied for tenth with 82 events. Besides a swift Fort Eustis race equivalent to a 45:30 10K, she was crowned at the Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:40:46, less than a minute behind Loughran’s best time. Another of Harrison’s claims to fame was three overall wins. Next in line, Betty Blank was sixth in races just short of 100. Only one of the top five runners by event made the top twenty-five. Blank won her position, fifth, with her 1:16:06 Army 10 miler triumph.

Six of these ladies submitted times fast enough for a division twenty years younger. Division winner Alice Franks could have leapfrogged up five divisions. Fifty-six of her 120 races earned bonus points for speed, the most of any runner in any division. Lucy McCausland joined the division last fall and though her two races were the fastest, she fell one short in qualifiers. After that, Franks exploded with the next twenty races, including the Veterans Day 10K in 45:55. That and her Purple Strides 5K in 22:07 gave her the only World Class races for the qualifiers. The next four racers are all extremely close. Runner-up Mathewson ran the CKHD Love Run 5K in 23:06 to edge Dee Nelson’s 23:08 at the Alzheimer's Association Brain Health 5K. At the 10K, Mathewson ran her fifth best race, the VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 49:04. Nelson ran her second-best race the Pike's Peek 10K in 49:27. Bet Glover had the fastest Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:20:31 to take fourth place. Peggy Vail was a whisper behind that running the Down’s Park 5M in 38:24. At age seventy, Betty Brothers flashed her fastest race, running Yorktown Battlefield 10 Mile in 1:22:59. That is one second slower than legendary Hedy Marque, 73, ran the Cherry Blossom in 1991. Brothers ratcheted up her best age grade at the VAB Turkey Trot 10K the next year in 50:02. She owns the five best events. Both Brothers and third ranked Joan Coven boasted multiple sub 25:00s at the 5K. Coven was tops at 24:49 at the Crapolfest squeaking past Brothers’ two tries at the Eggleston OK 5K with 24:50 and 24:54. Two years older runner-up Mary Kate Berglund ran a credible 25:04 at the Boxer Brief Battle 5K to match Coven’s time at the Governor’s Land 5K. Three years earlier Berglund capped her spot running the Homelessness Takes a Hike 5K in 24:34. Fourth place Dee Nelson has a career average of sixty events a year. After leading the 65-69 division with 155 races, she dropped to sixth in this division with 90 events. However, she was first in 89 of them. Five women accrued more than 100 events, including Jeanette Novak’s massive 386 races. Nelson was best at the Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:27:29.
