I hereby nominate Lester Bowles Pearson as the greatest canadian of the twentieth
century. He has greatly influenced international recognition of Canada, not to mentionsignificantly improving the nations own systems. Thanks to him, the Canadian identity is
widely recognized as one of peacekeeping, after helping prevent a terrible catastrophe, the
Suez Crisis. In addition, he was an extremely personable man, making friends and putting
everyone at ease.
Lester B. Pearson was born the April 23, 1897 in Toronto, Ontario, to Edwin Arthur
Pearson and Annie Sarah Bowles. He spent his early years moving to and from different small
towns in Ontario, before attending Toronto University. Then, during World War I, Pearson
enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps and later worked in the Royal Flying corps. After
the war, he returned to his studies. He was a very educated person, attending both Victoria
College at the University of Toronto and St Johns College, Oxford as post-secondaryeducation. He was also an exceptional athlete, playing everything from rugby to baseball, a lot
of the time at semipro levels.
After receiving top marks foreign service examination in 1927, Pearson started working
in the Department of External Affairs. He worked both in London and Washington through the
second world war, becoming an extremely successful diplomat with others frequently asking him
for advice. Because of his success, some historians called his times the "golden years" of
Canadian diplomacy. During this time period, Pearson helping solve the Suez Crisis.
When on July 26, 1956 Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal, France, Britain and Israel
decide to invade, for fear of losing precious oil. This leads to huge consequences, ripping apart
the Western alliance and pitting Washington against Britain. Pearson then decides to step in.
During four sleepless nights, he put together a coalition in the United Nations to propose theworlds first peacekeeping forces. These forces are sent in and arrive on November 15, 1956.
Because of his profound work on this crisis, Lester B. Pearson was awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize in December, 1957.
A few months later, Mike, as he was commonly called by family and friends, became
head of the Liberal Party. Although he never had a much wanted majority government, Pearson
introduced many new pieces of legislation, very much improving canadian life. These include
the Canada Pension Plan, Universal Medicare, a new Immigration Act, a Fund for Rural
Economic Development, the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism and even the
Canadian Flag.
Lester Bowles Pearson was an inspirational figure for Canadians and people all over theworld, promoting peace and hope for a better world. Many awards many been made in his
name, and all should try to learn a thing or two from this Prime Minister, either from his
incredible dreams or just from his easygoing and personable personality.

SpeechHi, Im Lester B. Pearson. I was born in 1897, in Toronto. I went to Hamilton and the
University of Toronto, and in 1914 I enlisted in World War I. There I worked in the Canadian
Army Medical Corps and the Royal Flying Corps.
Ah, Forget about these notes.
After the war, in 1928, I began working in the department of external affairs.
I love all sports, and have played many of them in my life. Anyways, that reminds me of
a baseball game that I once watched... Ill tell you about that later.
I spent a 30 years of my life on peacekeeping, trying to have an early ceasefire in theVietnam war, and working with others to find a solution the the Suez Crisis. I was very honoured
to have received the Nobel Peace Prize a year later for work on this subject.
One time when I really felt bad was when I was criticized by fellow canadians after
helping out in the Suez Crisis. People said I had betrayed my Motherland, even though I had
only done what I thought was right.
I later became the leader of the liberal party, and was then elected to Prime Minister
twice in a row. I didnt really like being Prime Minister because it was very stressful, but I
enjoyed helping the canadian people, creating universal medicare, the royal commission on
bilingualism and biculturalism, the auto pact, the pension plan and our canadian flag.
Of all our dreams today there is none more important - or so hard to realize - than thatof peace in the world. May we never lose our faith in it or our resolve to do everything that can
be done to convert it one day into reality
By the way, you can call me Mike.
