Riverside Community Hospital announced plans for a $315 million expansion on the facility’s campus that is needed to improve access to healthcare for a growing population. Over the next few weeks, the Chamber will be surveying member businesses in an effort to gather ideas and suggestions to help us improve. I encourage members to participate in the survey and help us to become even more effective in 2013. For more than a century the Chamber has demonstrated the value we bring to the community and it is your support and your input enables us to continually get better.

Finally, I’d like to remind residents to do their part to support local businesses and

the community by shopping locally. Shopping in Riverside keeps your dollars in your community. We wish every-one very warm, wonderful, safe and happy holiday season.

Chamber Continues to Help Build Economy by Building PartnershipsThere were many tight election races, with many important measures on the ballot this year and the Chamber thanks all of our members who cast their ballots and made their voices heard. The Chamber also thanks all of the candidates for their willingness to be of service to their community. With our newly elected officials in place and the holiday season upon us, now is the perfect time to renew our commitment and advocacy efforts towards building a stronger local economy. The political season has ended in Riverside, but the work of building partner-ships and carrying out the work necessary to move our region forward continues.

Comprehensive improvement and regional advancement takes collective effort, and it all begins with the mutual support, respect, and cooperative partnerships like those that the Chamber has become known for. The accreditation of the UCR School of Medi-cine and the expansion plans of Riverside Community Hospital are examples of what can be accomplished when people work together. Both of these successes are major

victories for Riverside in terms of economic impact and improved healthcare access.

There are still several key issues that will require the continued advocacy and collective effort of all of our members and I am confi-dent that our Chamber will be able to effec-tively address these issues and continue to positively effect change for businesses, and our community.

“ The political season has ended in Riverside, but the work of building partnerships and carry-ing out the work neces-sary to move our region forward continues.”

60th and 61st Assembly DistrictsTwo State Assembly Districts that effectively bisect the City of Riverside also split their results as local business owner Eric Linder successfully campaigned to represent the 60th Assembly District covering western Riverside, Corona, Norco, Eastvale, and Jurupa Valley. For almost 20 years working in small business, Linder has worked in the real estate industry, founded an online communications firm, eMotiv Marketing, and owned an aircraft rental and chartering company.

In the 61st Assembly District including eastern Riverside, Moreno Valley, and Perris, educator Jose Medina successfully prevailed to elected office. In 1974, Medina graduated from the University of California, Riverside, earned his bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies, and later earned a master’s degree in History from UCR. Prior to the election, Medina was a teacher with the Riverside Unified School District.

31st Senate District

In one of the most closely-watched and expensive state legislative races in California,

small business owner Richard Roth succeeded at the ballot booth to become to the State Senator for the 31st Senate District. Roth graduated from law school at Emory Univer-sity in 1974 and entered the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps. After retiring from the service, Roth served as a managing partner for several local law firms before eventually starting his own practice.

41st Congressional District

In another high profile and contentious race in the region, educator Mark Takano succeeded to become the representative to the U.S. House of Representatives for the 41st Congressional District. Takano attended Harvard College and received his bachelor’s degree in Government in 1983. He began teaching in the Rialto Unified School District in 1988 and was eventually elected to the Riverside Community College District Board of Trustees in 1990.

Looking to the future, this new group of elected leaders will create much opportunity for the Chamber and the local business community to advocate for the critical issues that impact the local economy.

Several floors of the patient tower will be shelled space available for future growth and expansion. In addition to the tower, the project will include several major components including:

• A new 4-level, 861-space Parking Garage• A new 3-floor, 60,000 square-foot

upgrades to an existing patient tower

“The Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce is proud to be a collaborative partner with Riverside Community Hospital in supporting this exciting hospital expansion project,” says Cindy Roth, President and CEO of the Greater Riverside Chamber of Commerce. “The new tower will be a tremendous addition to the community as it helps to ensure the improvement of access to healthcare. In addition, the project offers new jobs and more opportunity for our local economy.”

Make a Difference in Your Business CommunityThe Chamber is now accepting nominations for those interested in serving on the Board of Directors for 2013-2014. This year will embark new opportunities to make a difference in the business community as we take on the issues to help strengthen the local economy. Serving on the boards is a great leadership experience and offers the opportunity to help shape the direction and actions of the Chamber.

Ballots for those serving a three year term on the Greater Riverside and Area Business Council Boards will be mailed out to the general membership in January.

The Chamber’s bylaws state the following:

Article V, Section 4 c, ballots shall be mailed to all members in good standing at least ten (10) days prior to the election. The ballot will contain a list of all of the nominees certified and recommended by the Nominating committees. Nominees shall be placed on the ballot by the Nominating committee. members joining after ballots have been mailed out shall not be entitled to a vote.

would likely be passed on to consumers. Proposition 38 would have temporarily raised income taxes on individuals and small busi-nesses to fund K-12 education without any similar funding for higher education systems. On the other side, the passage of Chamber-supported Proposition 40 confirmed the work of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission to develop State Senate Districts that reflect the state’s growing population.

In the other tax decision before voters, Cham-ber-opposed Proposition 30 was largely turned down by Riverside County voters but results across the state ended in an ultimate passage of the initiative. Proposed by Governor Brown, Proposition 30 temporarily increases rates on sales tax and income taxes for higher-income earners to fund K-12 and higher

education. Another contentious fight centered on Proposition 32, an initiative that would limit the capabilities for special interests like unions and corporations to use funds auto-matically debited from their members and employees to influence elections. In contrast to Proposition 30, narrow support for Propo-sition 32 in Riverside County could not over-come significant opposition across California.

Despite Chamber concerns regarding impacts to state and the business community, voters across the state passed Proposition 39, which raises taxes on multi-state businesses that have operations in California, and opposed Proposition 31, which proposed significant reforms to the state’s budget process in an effort to improve stability and avoid future ballot-box tax initiatives.

Chamber Urges Local Supportfor New Perris Valley Line StationAs part of its broader support for the Perris Valley Line Metrolink Extension, the Chamber urges the Riverside City Council to approve the final design and construction of the line’s Hunter Park station. The new station will not only create new jobs through construction, but will also move the entire extension project one step closer to opening commuter rail travel to employment centers across Inland Southern California.

When completed, the Perris Valley Line will serve four stations in Riverside, at March Air Reserve Base and the City of Perris, providing a commute alternative to the highly congested I-215 freeway. Perris Valley Line will also create additional train trips on the 91 Line, which parallels SR-91 into L.A. Union Station, serving as a major release valve for congestion in the region.

The Perris Valley Line will provide commuters with a convenient, safe and traffic free alternative to the I-215, one of the fastest growing corridors in the county. The project will also provide communities such as Hemet, San Jacinto, Murrieta, Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Wildomar and Temecula closer access to the Southern California commuter rail network.

This project is a significant step towards expanding public transportation in Riverside County while providing access to major eco-nomic development centers. On opening

day, the proposed Metrolink extension through the Perris Valley is projected to serve 4,350 riders daily, eliminating thousands of vehicle trips per day on the 215 and 60 free-ways. Without any unforeseen delays in the project schedule, the Perris Valley Line is expected to open for service by late 2013 or early 2014.

Proposed Perris Valley Line

Throughout its construction and com pletion, the project will spur job creation in Riverside and Perris, the Hunter Park business center, and new development at March Air Reserve Base.

10 Ways the Chamber Helped Your Business

The Chamber and the community celebrated the recent accreditation of the UCR School of Medicine. The School will address the region’s severe physician shortage and help to improve the local economy.

The Chamber hosted City of Riverside Mayoral candidates Ed Adkison (left) and William “Rusty” Bailey , encourag-ing active engagement in the selection of business-friendly legislators.

The Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee helped organize more than 350 volunteers to serve over 3,200 military personnel and their families at the 40th Annual Military Apprecia-tion Picnic.

The Chamber is committed to building a stronger local economy by being an advocate for our members and voice for business. Here are 10 ways your investment in the Chamber helped us to improve the Riverside business community.

Successfully Supported the Accreditation of the UCR School of Medicine

After more than four years of hard work by the Chamber and other community partners, the UCR School of Medicine received accreditation, marking a major step forward in improving health care access and bolstering the region’s economy.

Successfully Supported ADA Reform Legislation Curbing Predatory Lawsuits

With the passage of Chamber-supported legislation SB 1186 authored by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and Senator Bob Dutton, fines for small businesses with access violations were significantly reduced with greater avenues added for business and property owners to ensure that their facilities are compliant.

Hosted Riverside Mayoral Candidates for Forum Discussion of the City’s Economic Future

In an effort to engage government and business, the Chamber hosted Riverside City mayoral candidates Ed Adkison and William “Rusty” Bailey. Candidates Adkison and Bailey discussed their views and ideas on the challenges facing the City. The forum provided members with the opportunity to meet the candidates and to become better informed for the elections.

2

Advocated for the Reduction of Utility Rates for Businesses

The Chamber has supported efforts to retain local businesses and attract new businesses to the area by backing the Temporary Economic Development (TED) Rate on electricity. Implementation of the rates, which will offer reductions of up to 30-percent, will help spur economic growth and give those businesses looking to relocate even more reason to come to Riverside.

Provided Members with Resources to Help Their Businesses Grow and Improve

The Chamber’s “Marketing Through Mobile Phones and Tablet Devices” Business Seminar provided members with the strategies and proven techniques that drive a successful marketing campaign.

Promoted the Community Through the Festival of Lights

The Chamber supported and promoted the community by helping to plan and execute the 2012 Festival of Lights Switch-on Ceremony. The Switch-on ceremony brings tens of thousands of visitors to Riverside allowing them the opportunity to explore the unique history and beauty of the City. Each year the Festival of Lights provides an economic impact of more than $20 million to the local economy through shopping, dining, and hotel revenue.

Supported Local Military at Annual Appreciation Picnic

The Chambers Military Affairs Committee and the greater community thanked Team March at the 40th Annual Military Appreciation Picnic. Local elected officials and enthusiastic volunteers served more than 3,200 military personnel and their families during a relaxing day with great music and fun filled games for kids.

Championed Plans to Attract New Businesses and Jobs

The Chamber has actively supported the City’s Economic Development Action Plan/Business Attraction Plan for focusing atten-tion on creating jobs for our community and region. In the last fiscal year 1,396 jobs were attracted or retained and an additional 9,631 construction jobs have been created.

Endorsed Business-Friendly Ballot Measures

In order to create a stronger local economy, the Chamber took the responsibility of analyzing and promoting local and state measures that help the business community.

Provided Connection Opportunities for Over 150 Businesses at Golf Classic

The Chamber hosted the 27th Annual Golf Classic at Jurupa Hills Country Club bringing together area business and community leaders from all types of industries to meet potential clients, build community relationships and open the door to new business opportunities.

The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, the Chamber, and the City of Riverside partnered together to make the switch-on ceremony a huge suc-cess. Don’t miss out on the festivities this year.

With over 3 million lights illuminating the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, the 20th Annual Riverside Festival of Lights brought in more than 65,000 people from around Southern California and beyond to witness the switch-on of the colorful cascade of lights and an assortment of over 400 animatronic charac-ters and sculptures that decorate the entire façade of the historic Inn. The same night visitors experienced a spectacular fireworks show that celebrated the beginning of the holiday season.

A tradition since 1992 bringing millions of

dollars in economic activity to local businesses in Riverside, the “Switch-on Ceremony” took place at the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa and is presented by “Keeper of the Inn,” Duane Roberts. Every night until January 5, 2013, festival-goers can enjoy the lights, an outdoor ice skating rink, reindeer, live holiday entertainment, a variety of dining options and unique shopping along the Main Street Mall. Horse Drawn carriages fill the streets for the remainder of the event and don’t forget to pay Santa Claus a visit and give him your wish list. Parking will be free on weekends and free after 5 PM during weekdays.

For more information, contact Project Coor-dinator Nick Psomas at 951-683-7100 ext. 218 or at [email protected].

Next month, the Mega Mixer & Trade Show is moving to the Galleria at Tyler on Thursday, January 31, 2013 and with the new venue, participants will experience additional value. The Galle-ria at Tyler offers plenty of free parking with multiple ways to access the event. The venue is open to the business and local commu-nity, reaching a whole new audience. The Mega Mixer & Trade Show will also fea-ture a “Taste of the Galleria” highlighting the dining experiences throughout the center.

Businesses need to register now to be a part of the Chamber’s largest annual networking event. Over 100 exhibitors from various

industries are slated to display their latest products, information and exclusive deals for potential customers, clients, and partners.

General Spaces are $250, while only four limited Premier Spaces that include electricity and a larger display space are available for $500.

All exhibitors must be members of the Chamber and spaces are selling fast.

To register your business for the 2013 Mega Mixer & Trade Show, learn more about con-necting with other businesses or to donate a door prize, contact Special Events Manager Kelly Straine at [email protected] or 951-683-7100 ext. 211.

Tiana Sanchez is chamber Ambassador of the monthThe Chamber congrat-ulates Tiana Sanchez, Performance Consultant for The Employers Edge, as Ambassador of the Month. The Employers Edge is a team of dedicated experienced professionals who are long-term trusted partners of their clients, with a mission to provide improved employee performance management solutions in employee selection, training, and coaching.

Looking to serve the community she worked in, connect with Chamber members, meet business owners and familiarize herself with Riverside, Sanchez joined the Ambassador Committee just over three months ago. Since then, she has been able to connect with members one-on-one and has grown awareness about The Employers Edge.

Though Sanchez takes great pride in representing the Chamber as an Ambassador at events like the Afterhours Business Mixers and being updated at monthly committee meetings, she also invests time with organi-zations like PIHRA (Professionals in Human Resource Assn.) and EmpowHer Institute, an organization dedicated to the empower-ment of young girls. For more information on the Ambassador Committee, please contact Kelly Straine at 951-683-7100 ext. 211 or [email protected].
