WINTER EDITION
2015
Message from the President
By: Heather Purnell, PresidentI can’t believe this year is coming to an end!! The GLPA
Board and members were very active and busy this year!! We
tried to increase membership by having a reception thanking
firms that pay for GLPA dues and encouraging those that don’t
to pay for dues.
The GLPA was very involved in the community and active
with the Fayette County Bar Association. We participated in
blood drives several times this year, some of which were in
conjunction with the Fayette County Bar Association. We
cooked dinner for families at the Ronald McDonald House,
collected money and items for the Lexington Humane Society
and also sent a package to the deployed National Guard Unit.
A CLE was offered monthly except July and December
with lunch and speaker. We also offered a Half Day CLE where
paralegals could earn 3 credit hours. Our November CLE was
approved with the Kentucky Bar Association for 1 Ethics Credit
for both attorneys and paralegals.
We had a Spring Social at the Roller Derby. Our Fall
Social was held in conjunction with our October CLE. Sullivan
graciously hosted this by providing lunch, a speaker and
transportation.
I hope to see you involved with the GLPA next year
either on the board, on a committee or behind the scenes. Thank
you for letting me serve as your President for the past 2 years.
It truly has been an honor.
As always, please email me with comments or suggestions.

Philanthropy SpotlightBy: Michelle Ralston
This month’s newsletter is somewhat different. I want to propose a few changes to how
philanthropy is handled. As the Philanthropy Chair, I have been responsible for choosing the philanthropy
events and facilitating donations and participation at events as needed.
I want to propose that we implement a philanthropy committee of five (5) volunteers, including
the chair. The Chair and the selected committee members will have an initial meeting to assign individual
job duties and generate a list of possible philanthropy events for the larger GLPA to vote on. Once the
committee generates this list of possible events, the larger GLPA will narrow it down to five (5) events.
Each member of the committee would be responsible for one of the events. Once these events are decided
and have a member assigned to each event, the committee will then decide the budget for each event.
In an effort to make it more streamlined and easier for people to donate, we are proposing cash
donations that the member in charge of the event can use for the event expenses, like buying donations or
supplies or just giving a portion of money to the philanthropy of choice. As always, if members of the
GLPA would like to donate their time to any event, that would be extremely appreciated and much
welcomed! At each monthly meeting there will be a container for members to provide monetary
donations that will be used to purchase items to donate or supplies for the philanthropy event for the
quarter.
Helpful Hints(Submitted by Bev Rawlings, RP)
To close out my stint as IT Chair, I thought I’d pass along a few software-relatedtips that I find very useful:
In Word, you can add a button to your toolbar that will allow you to scroll through adocument. You can vary the speed. It’ll take you a couple of tries to get the hang ofit, but it’s really useful after you do! It’s called “Auto Scroll” and you can findinstallation instructions here:http://wordribbon.tips.net/T009859_Automatic_Scrolling.html
WordTips (wordribbon.tips.net or word.tips.net, depending on your version of Word)is a useful site for clear instructions on Word functions. You can subscribe to theirnewsletter and get a weekly “lesson” on a topic of their choice.
In Adobe Acrobat, you can also scroll through a document. Press CTRL + SHIFT + H,and then press 1-9 for speed (slow to fast). Press Esc to stop.
I recently discovered a site (http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Templates-%26-Software/Software/Avery-Design--Print-Online.htm) that lets you create text to fitany Avery label or business card. You can store the text online at that site ordownload it to your computer. I find it saves me the hassle of dealing with Word’slabel function, especially if I want to print a full page of the same label.
If you type the paragraph symbol (¶), you probably get tired of clickingInsert>Symbol in Word. Or maybe, like me, you prefer to keep your hands on thekeyboard as much as possible. Try this keyboard shortcut: ALT + 0182 (using yournumber pad keys). You can search online for other ALT keyboard shortcuts; thereare lots!
Hope you find these useful! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to everyone!
SPECIAL EVENTS SURVEY
(Submitted by: Liz Boggs)
Many thanks to those of you who responded to the survey I sent out asking for input on what typesof social events members would like the GLPA to sponsor. I so appreciate you taking time to answer thequestions and get back to me. While we all dearly love our families, the overwhelming majority said theypreferred a members only social to be held either at lunch time or after work. Weekend events were not atall popular. Members also indicated a favor toward a spring social geared more toward getting to knowthe other members in our group. Since I have been re-elected to this position for next year (thank you forthat vote of confidence) I plan to implement some of your suggestions. Be on the lookout for a springsocial to be held earlier than usual so that we can meet and get to know members. Due to timeconstraints, it is difficult to socialize at the monthly CLE meetings, so if we can introduce ourselvesearlier that might help put faces to names.
Please let me know if you have any other suggestions on how to make next year better than ever.Thank you again.
NFPA NEWS TO USE ……Glenna Fugazzi, RP, NFPA Primary Representative
Mary Campbell, CKP, NFPA Secondary Representative
The NFPA Annual Convention and Policy Meeting is now history. New officers wereelected to carry this national association into 2016 and new policy was presented and votedupon by the delegates in attendance. All GLPA members should be receiving regularemails from NFPA advising of excellent (and affordable) CLEs and happenings across thecountry.
The GLPA Board agreed to submit a proposal to NFPA to host the 2017 Joint Conference. All bids were reviewed by the NFPA Board at the October Annual Conference, but we fellshort. Our bid, however, was well-written and the NFPA Board was very impressed withthe presentation – very impressed. It is the hope of the GLPA Board that we can againsubmit a proposal when the meeting is back on the East Coast! It has been an honor and a privilege to serve this year as your NFPA Representatives. Please continue to look over the NFPA website at www.paralegals.org and login as aMember. You will be surprised at all the information available. The GLPA is looking forward to 2016 and continuing our relationship with NFPA.
Student Scholarship Winner - Essay
By: Heather Purnell, Student Relations
Congratulations to Shelby Shackelford who is the recipient of a $500
scholarship and is a freshman at EKU with a double major of paralegal science
and political science. See below for her essay:
In high school, in my hometown of Lexington, I was fortunate enough to
be able to complete a six week student internship at the Human Rights
Commission. While there I was unable to directly work with any lawyers, as an
intern I spent most of the time filing papers and making copies, but in being
there I was able to observe frequently what the attorneys did to assist these
people who were being discriminated against and instantly I knew exactly what
I wanted to go to college for. As a female student who went to the high school
on the “wrong side of town” and had a bad reputation, I understand what it is
like to feel as though you are not being treated fairly in some situations and I
am extremely passionate about helping others to make this world a better and
more equal place for everyone. After being able to experience working in the
Human Rights Commission first hand, I know that I want to become a paralegal
and then ultimately an attorney and work in the field of civil rights law. I also
someday would like to go into politics once I have a bit of law experience so
that I can help people by making positive changes in the government that will
benefit others. Currently as a student at Eastern Kentucky University double
majority in Political and Paralegal Science, I definitely feel that I am on my way
toward achieving this dream.
Looking Ahead
(Submitted by Bev Rawlings, RP)
I ran across this column by Vicki Voisin, who blogs as “The Paralegal Mentor”. It wasoriginally published at the end of 2012, but I think the lessons still apply:
As you kick off the New Year, instead of “resolutions” look for “realsolutions” that will help you grow and flourish in the 12 months ahead.

7. Always ask, “What can I learn from this situation?”
8. Do not be a follower. Instead, find the courage to be your uniqueself.

FALL SOCIAL(Submitted by: Liz Boggs)
The fall social was held in conjunction with the October CLE at Sullivan University. Our good friends at Sullivan sent their bus downtown to pick up about 20 members thatwere attending. My attempt at getting everyone to sing camp songs did not go over verywell, but needless to say, it was very enjoyable having our own personal chauffeur. Theculinary students prepared delicious soups and sandwiches for lunch, a brief get to knowyou activity was held at the beginning and two $25.00 door prizes were given away. Thanks, as always, to Helen Bongard and the good people at Sullivan University for theircontinued support of the GLPA.

DECEMBER LUNCH(Submitted by: Liz Boggs)
Wow!!! I don’t know about everyone else, but I had an absolutely wonderful timeat the lunch held on Dec. 3rd at the Hilary J. Boone Alumni Center on the UK campus. The facility was perfect, the food was perfect, and the people were perfect. Certainly putme in the holiday mood. An absolutely fantastic way to start off December and all theactivities associated with the holiday season. We had 51 people register to attend, andalmost everyone came. Many door prizes were given away as well as awards andrecognitions for the past year. I have to say our members are what make these “special”events and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your support, participation and kindwords.
Also, I would be remiss to not thank each and every one of you who voted for mefor the Don Eppler award. Everyone on the board donates countless hours during thecourse of the year and does so selflessly and with enthusiasm. Winning the award was avery proud moment for me and all I can say again is thank you.
