  • On behalf of the La Crosse Area Sports Commission I would like to thank all the schools, athletic directors, coaches and athletes who participated in our first at-tempt at producing the Gridiron Special edition to our sports magazine. Unfortunately were not able to put every schools full profile in our magazine due to space issues. Please encourage your favorite school to par-ticipate in future similar issues, and as always, please contact me with any question or comments.

We are undergoing some exciting changes at the sports commission, including the launching of our new web site. We will be featuring guest sports writ-ers on a weekly basis, and if you or your organization is hosting a sports or recreation based event, you can submit the event to be hosted on our web site for FREE! We will also link every sports organizations web site to ours, also free. The new web site is sched-uled to launch in early September.

Enjoy the newest issue of the Greater La Crosse Sports Connection Magazine!

Sincerely,Brian MeeterExecutive DirectorLa Crosse Area Sports Commission

  • When you are not 100%, neither is your team. Being prepared to play one game is not the most difficult thing to do, but to play eight, nine, and ten games can be down right next to impossible. To maintain your physi-cal skills throughout a long season, you must train both your mind and your body. This weeks game is the most important. Train for it like its your last and listen to the practice and training directions given by your coaching staff!

Strength training does more than just make you bigger and stronger. The training program should be focused on making you a better athlete. Beware: squatting more weight does not always correlate to improve-ment in athleticism. When doing a back squat the first thing that comes to mind is training heavy and taking the motto that which does not kill you makes you stronger to heart. When in fact just doing a back squat at a low to medium intensity can identify a change in flexibility or a possible loss of strength. So not all sessions need to show how hard the athlete is willing to work, in fact that in most cases its counterproductive. An all out session may leave you about 90% of your best for 10-14 days, that could be two games. Practice is most important and the speed and inten-sity at which you practice will lead to the best results come game day and being 90% will lead to inaccurate coach assumptions about your ability and poor team coordination. The balance is to practice at your best while multi-task-training your athletic ability training and listen to what your coaching has to say.

So the question is how do I decide what exercises to do and what the pur-pose should be? The answer is to incorporate periodic checks for bal-ance, flexibility, and/or stabilization. These can be insightful to a healthy season. These activities, seen below, can easily be rotated into the daily dynamic warm-up, to self-assess your current status. The activities are modified slightly from their original Bunkie Test. The modifications were done in order to perform them without any need for equipment.

When performing these exercises the athlete should be able to hold each position for the allotted time. The key is to pay attention to how your body feels when performing the exercise. If there are any sore or painful areas please report what the problem was and the exercise that caused it to your coach and/or athletic trainer. They in turn will be able to provide useful exercises that should attack the weak or less than optimal areas. This will help for numerous reasons, the most beneficial would be hav-ing an athlete at or near 100% for their upcoming game. Next would be a reduction in practice time as activities can be individualized rather than programmed as a series.

  • I recently interviewed Bobby at the Boober Parizek American Legion Tournament.

Q: Your going to play baseball for the University of Minne-sota. They have a rich tradition, have won 3 NCAA national championships. Why did you choose Minnesota?A: I like the school and the classes I will be taking. Also, the coaching staff teaches and plays a style of baseball that I like.

Q: Who is your favorite Major League Baseball player? A: I am a left handed batter and I like Prince Fielder because he is also left handed with power.

Q: Do you have any words of wisdom for the little leaguers out there?A: Keep practicing. Baseball is a fun game, so have fun while you are playing it.

Q: Tell me a little about your commitment to volunteering in our community.A: I have been a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and our basketball team helped teach the fundamentals of the game to the Special Olympics Team. Volunteering forces you out of your element and it has personally helped me to develop as a person.

Q: What is your favorite food?A: I like Italian food and my favorite is Fettuccini Alfredo. Q: What are your future goals?A: I would like to be an athletic trainer or a coach.
