03The Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival 2012
Welcome
After the sell-out success of last year, we havedecided to make this year the biggest and bestyet with more real ales and ciders than everbefore. We have increased the amount of eachbeer we order as well so we will be able to keepup the range of everyone’s favourites.
Over the past year we have seen somemomentous changes to the brewing scene inWales – all of them for the better. First off lastyear's Champion Beer of Wales winner RhymneyBrewery moved to a purpose-built visitor centreand brewery in Blaenavon, close to the NationalMuseum at Big Pit, we wish them all the successat this new place and don't forget to visit themthere. Next, Wales’ biggest real ale brewers SABrain have installed a ‘craft brewery’ in their existing Victorian tower brewery, allowing them todo short runs of beers utilising different ingredientssuch as unusual hop varieties. We are verypleased to see these new beers on the bar alongside their old favourites such as SA.
Celt Experience and Otley breweries have bothexpanded into larger premises and Tomas Watkinbrewery purchased a brand-new state-of-the-artbottling line. Meanwhile in Newport, new kids onthe block Tiny Rebel are taking the Welsh brewingindustry by storm with their innovative new beers, definitely a favourite for all hop-heads out there. We now have around 45 breweries in Wales, more than we have had for almost a century, wehave not been able to bring them all to this festi-val, as much as we would have liked to, but ourbars team and wholesalers have tried to bring as
many as are possible. We also have a selection ofbeers from Yorkshire this year with some award-winning brews that are not usually seen in Wales.
Then there is our cider and perry, the best rangein the whole of Wales with makers from acrossthe UK represented. The foreign bar this year features beers from the Budvar Brewery of theCzech Republic, with a very rare outing for their‘Yeast’ beer, the unpasteurised version of theirOriginal lager.
We hope you enjoy the festival and don’t forgetto tweet about it using #GWBCF, I’ll be tweetingabout the festival myself from my personalaccount of @ArfurD and other staff members willbe using the @GWBCF account, so we will tryand respond to your comments straight away, time permitting.
Please remember that all staff here at the GreatWelsh Beer & Cider Festival are volunteers andwe have given up our free time to run this festivalfor your enjoyment.
Finally, this year the festival charity is a local,Cardiff-based one, Woodlands High School, whichspecialises in teaching children with learning difficulties. We hope you will donate any unusedbeer tokens to this worthy charity.

Czech Beers
For GWBCF 2012 we will be bringing you a rangeof beers from the Budvar Brewery all the wayfrom the Czech Republic.
ORIGINAL 5%Brewed in a 100 day cycle (90 spent in second-ary fermentation) from a source of natural springwater, Moravian barley malt, whole hops and astrain of yeast resident at the brewery since 1895Budvar Original is deservedly regarded as one ofthe world’s great lager conditioned beers.
DARK 4.7%Budvar Dark has been designed to familiarise thebeer lover with how all Bohemian and Bavarianlagers tasted before mass produced pale maltmade golden lager commercially possible in themid nineteenth century. This is because it hasbeen designed to come as close as possible tohow all Bohemian and Bavarian lagers tastedbefore bottom fermented golden lager stole theshow in the mid nineteenth century.
Now, thanks to Budweiser Budvar, the Darksideis moving centre stage again. Enjoying the samebrewing cycle as Original, Dark gets its deliciousroasted flavour from being brewed from threetypes of malt; Munich, caramel and roasted.
YEAST 5%Budvar Yeast Beer is the unpasteurised version ofBudvar Original, encapsulating all the same tastecues and as fresh as if it were being drunk at thebrewery tap.
It’s brewed with the same care and patience asORIGINAL, has the same ABV of 5% and usesthe same ingredients in a 100 day brewing cycle. The big difference is that being unpasteurisedwith extra yeast cells being added by hand at the
last stage of the brewing process, Budvar Yeast isa brew of almost other worldly freshness andpurity.

Cider and PerryCider-tastic!
Once again at the Great Welsh Beer &Cider Festival we aim to bring you thebest real ciders and perries that are
available. As well as our own fantastic producersfrom Wales we are featuring ciders from as faraway as Lancashire and even Scotland as well asold favourites from Somerset and Herefordshire. Some of our producers are very small, producingonly a few hundred gallons a year, others startedsmall and are now large makers but the sameamount of care and consideration is shown inmaking the large amounts as is in the smallamounts.
We should have ciders to everyone's taste andpalette here; from sweet to extra dry but remem-ber one makers medium could be another mak-ers sweet so at the Festival we will be using ascoring system marked on the labels with 1 forextra sweet and 12 for extra dry.
Don't forget to try our perries as well, madefrom pears in the same way cider is made fromapples. Perry pear trees take a long time to growand can live for hundreds of years, also theflavours are a lot more subtle than you wouldfind in cider.

20 The Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival 2012
As well as visiting the beer festival, there arealso some brilliant pubs to visit in the CityCentre. No journey to Cardiff is complete
without a visit to the current Cardiff CAMRA Pubof the Year, the City Arms on Quay Street. Thisold pub was reinvented as a speciality ale house
by owners SA Brain in late 2010 and has established itself as the premier beer pub of theCity. As well as beers from Brains, the City Armsserves beer from other Welsh breweries as wellas brews from further afield. American andGerman beer festivals have been held along witha cider festival and there is always a wide choiceof beer available, on handpump or straight fromthe barrel. The pub is also a rare outlet for BudvarDark and there is an excellent selection of bottledbeers from around the world. ‘Meet the Brewer’nights, featuring Welsh brewers have also been afeature since the reopening.
A short distance away,on Westgate Street, isthe state-of-the-artZerodegrees micro-brewery, housed in aformer garage, built inthe art-deco style. A
range of regular beers, including Pale Ale, BlackLager, Pilsner are matched with monthly specialssuch as an Elderflower Beer and the stunningOktoberfest Lager available at the same time asthe small beer festival held in Munich inSeptember. Pizzas are also available at this pub.
Towards the castle, at thetop end of High Street, isthe Goat Major, whichserves Brains beers andguest ales. Amid thegleaming brasswork andtiles the menu is worthperusing as this pub spe-cialises in pies and has evenwon ‘Pie of the Year’ fortheir creations. As well asthe fixed menu, chalkboardsannounce the weekly special pie which could beanything, from venison to cheese.
Nearby on DukeStreet, opposite theSouth-East end of thecastle wall is the timber-fronted RummerTavern which opensout to a cavernous inte-rior. The Rummer is arare local outlet for WyeValley HPA and featuresregularly-changing guestbeers and a cider onhandpump.
Just around the corner, in the shadow of the spireof St John’s Church is the Owain Glyndwr, a pubthat has been renamed more times than almostany other Cardiff pub and was once the brewerytap for the long-defunct Nell’s Brewery. Previousnames include the Tennis Courts, the Buccaneer, the Mably Arms and the Kemys-Tynte Arms. Todaythis busy pub is a rare local outlet for beers fromthe Vale of Glamorgan Brewery.
Nearby in Church Street is the famous OldArcade which features in the CAMRA book ‘Real

Heritage Pubs of Wales’and the Brains beers arealways in top form in thisearly Victorian pub. At thelower end of the Hayes isthe Duke of
Wellington, an imposing red-brick building builtin 1892 and named in honour of the Duke tocommemorate his death 50 years earlier. ThisBrains serves guest beers and opens early if any-one wants a coffee.
Finally a mention has to be made of everyone’sfavourite Cardiff boozer the Vulcan, the pub isnow shut but luckily it has been saved for thenation and will be rebuilt at the National Museumin St Fagans. A long campaign has been fought tosave this pub which dates back to 1853 andalthough many of us would have liked to see itremain where it was, this was the only realisticoption in the end.
