arrivedintheUnitedStates.ImmigrantsarrivinginNewYorkCityfirstlandedatEllis

Island,wheretheywentthroughanexaminationprocesstoenterthecountry.Thefirst

imageisa1915photographshowingimmigrantsarrivingbyshiptoNewYorkCitygazingat

theStatueofLiberty.Thesecondimageisa1920photographshowingahealthinspection

fornewimmigrantsatEllisIsland.Inspectorscheckedfortrachoma,ahighlycontagious

anddifficulttocureeyedisease.Eyelidswereinvertedorpulledoutwardtoseeif

immigrantsdisplayedsymptomsofthisdreadeddisease.
