Rivera’s Rants ...Greetings Illustrious Compeers! I

hope you all are having a great summer! There has been a lot happening in the magic world lately. Probably the most shocking story of the month is the Pendragon incident. Who invented the pay toilet? I’m sure most of you have heard by now, but Jonathan Pendragon was arrested for apparently trying to shoot his wife! The couple got into an argument and he shot a bullet into the fl oor of their home. Charlotte quickly ran outside and called 911. He was arrested on charges of: assault with a deadly weapon, spousal abuse, terrorist threats, and fi ring a weapon into an inhabited dwelling. The handgun was taken by deputies along with four other handguns, a shotgun and a rifl e.

Now on to some good news: with Lance Burton’s contract expiring, he just announced that he is renewing his contract for another six years! Who discovered an optical principle to produce transparent ghosts on a theatre stage and what was the name of the effect? However, he will be taking it easy from now on. He will only be doing one show a day fi ve days a week. His new contract begins on July 7th and the mayor of Las Vegas proclaimed July 7th “Lance Burton Day.”

There were rumors going around that David Copperfi eld was supposed to create some new illusions for the (no longer) Michael Jackson concert series. Where was the Society of American Magicians founded? The rumors also said that David wanted

$1 million per show and Michael turned him down and instead hired Criss Angel and later dropping him, too. David just gave an interview the other day and said that none of those rumors were true and that the two have not discussed any business since the early 1990s. What is the name of the Michael Jackson music video that David Copperfi eld is in and what is Copperfi eld doing?

Congratulations again to Chris Kenner who just got married on July 4th. He and his wife are expecting a child later this year.

Jim Steinmeyer is the illusion director of the new and improved Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Baileys Circus. They kicked off their tour in Los Angeles and are headed to Canada after that. The Circus will be in KC on September 17th through the 19th.

Now, as some of you know, Guy Hollingworth is one of my favorite performers. My all-time favorite effect is his “Reformation.” Name all of the honorary members of the national S.A.M. It doesn’t matter what he does, it looks like pure magic in his hands. He performs some of the most diffi cult sleights and makes it look so easy and fl awless. There is one thing about him that I think is very interesting. Every time he practices, he always gets dressed up as if he were actually performing a show. Not just when he is rehearsing, but every time he

practices anything, he “puts on a coat and tie, then slips into a pair of sharply creased trousers and leather shoes. Then and only then he would begin working.” He says that the clothes make him feel like he was at work, and they serve as a constant reminder of the task at hand. I think that is one of the reasons he is so successful because he takes it very seriously. Who created the Mercury Card Fold? So, the next time you are practicing something, not just rehearsing, because there is a difference, get all suited up and see how much better you feel about yourself.

I am going to include the answers of the previous quizzes for your information. For those of you who already know everything, feel free to skip this part….1) Before Phil Goldstein was Max Maven, he

10) Who was the first female magician to win the Magician of the Year award? Charlotte

Does he know the editor?” Actually, he does, but that’s beside the point! “But how am I going to get myself into the newsletter?” That’s easy. Send me a good quality, high resolution photo of you performing, and I’ll get it into the newsletter. Got a gig coming up that you’d like to promote, or let everyone know about a successful gig that you’d like to brag about, drop me a note, and remember the Five Ws: who, what, where, when and why. The Lost Lecture Notes of Frank Zak

Frank had a most uncommon Zak-Attack! Quite some time ago, he misplaced a set of lecture notes for a Brand New Lecture he was going to present … and then went into semi-retirement to pursue his career as a World Class Entertainment and Session Photographer… He found those notes, and is going to present his Lost Lecture exclusively at this years’ Magi~Que! Lecture notes will be available for $20, only at the Que!

Frank Zak (Yes, the Great Bar Magician from Las Vegas) is also an award-winning photographer. Frank has done my promo shots for the last 23 years, among other magic and entertainment professionals who are just as happy with his work! You can see some of Frank’s work at: www.fzphoto.com. Include your name and contact information in the body of the reply! Frank will need a check before Magi~Que 2009, and we will ask that you send those directly to him in Las Vegas.
