From Pastor Ralph’s Desk: Being A Good Minister For Jesus Christ
I Timothy 4:1-8
Intro: This past Sunday was a great day as we did a fundraiser for
Vacation Bible School and carried our our groundbreaking cere-
mony for our new school gymnasium. I focused our message upon
the groundbreaking ceremony. The way I did this was to lead us to a
passage of Scripture in I Timothy which Paul uses to tell young
Timothy how to be a good minister for Christ. In this text, we exam-
ined three of the ways mentioned to be a good minister for Jesus
Christ. By the end of the message, it became evident why this was
and is a good text for a gymnasium groundbreaking ceremony.
I. Paul said to Timothy that a good minister for Christ will hand
out the appropriate warnings, vs 1-6. Now as we’ve studied for a
few months from the Book of Colossians, we’ve already noted that
Paul was encouraging God’s people to avoid false teachers and
false teachings. So, we understand with this repetition about warning
against false teachers and false teachings, it was obviously a serious
problem, and a good minister for Christ will go out of his way to
make sure that his people receive their warnings.
However, we need to notice that Paul is emphasizing the
false teaching of the later times. We are certainly closer to the later
times than Paul and Timothy and I personally believe that we are
specifically in the last days and clearly the false teachers and teach-
ings are rampant both then and most clearly today.
In a nutshell, Paul said that the false teachers and false
teachings came straight out of the pit of hell. He pointed that the pri-
mary way to tell if it is false teaching is to listen and tell if it empha-
sizes the works of man or the works of Christ for our salvation. Any
teachings that exalts the works of man over Christ is clearly false.
All of our righteousness comes from Christ and none from mankind.
II. Second, Paul said to Timothy that a good minister for
Christ will focus upon the authoritative Word, vs 6-7. In verse
six, Paul reminds Timothy that he had been brought up in the
truths of the faith and of the good teachings that he followed. Then
in verse seven, Paul warns Timothy to avoid godless myths and
old wives tales. What he was saying to Timothy was to keep hold-
ing on and teaching what he had been taught by Paul as well as
by his mother and grandmother. All of which came right out of
God's Holy Word. It is our source of authority for our lives.
III. Third, Paul said to Timothy that a good minister of Christ
will pursue the advantaged way, vs 7-8. This is the part that ap-
plies to our groundbreaking ceremony. In these two verses, Paul
talks to young Timothy about two forms of training. The first tyupe
of training he refers to is physical training. What is it that Paul
teaches us about physical training? Well, what Paul tells us is that
it has some value. So, there is nothing wrong with physical train-
ing because it does have some value.
However, Paul introduces us to another style of training.
Paul call it Godliness training. This is the type of training that
focuses upon God and not the flesh. It is training that seeks to
please God in all areas of our lives. It is true spiritual training.
So, today, we will be doing a groundbreaking ceremony
for a gymnasium. What we usually associate a gym with is physi-
cal training. However, Paul said to focus upon the more advanta-
geous way which is Godliness or spiritual training. So, why are
we building a gym? The answer is because we will use the build-
ing to do both. Paul said bodily exercise does have some value.
Our children need to get in good physical health. However, what
they need more than anything is the spiritual training. What we
plan on doing is to use the gym to get them in for physical training
then when we have them in, we will give them spiritual training. It
will be used as a tool to ultimately train them in Godlines. Even
while they are doing physical training, we will do it in a way that
will even make that part of their Godly training. So I am grateful
how this building is going to help our school, church and commu-
nity to have some value through physical training but more impor-
tantly how it is going to help them grow in spiritual training.

‘Tis Mother’s Day. God’s Word is clear about her standing. She is to be honored. She is to be held in respectful regard and esteem. Some of us have only memories because our mothers are no longer with us in life. Some of you can reach out and touch her in this life. Whatever the case she is to be honored and to thank ?God for her. Give thanks in prayer. E.L. Ambrose
