RECOMMENDED BY OUR STAFF Curated Reading A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman Ove is a grumpy middle-aged widower who lives by himself in a house that reminds him of all he has lost. You will laugh your way through the pages as Ove works through his loneliness and unsettled life. His candid observations of the world around him and everyone he encounters will engage you as will the story of his life both past and present. And then you will cheer and you will cry because this is a book to enjoy and cherish. As a side note, it is ironic to me that this 59-year-old point of view (grumpy) is alarmingly close to mine. As is his age. This is a debut novel is already a bestselling book in Backman’s native Sweden. – Terry An August Fantastic First pick from Atria Books, $25.00. I See You Made an Effort: Compliments, Indignities, and Survival Stories from the Edge of 50 by Annabelle Gurwitch Comedian and actress Annabelle’s collection of 16 essays on hitting the half-century mark hold humor and resonance whether dealing with the universal concepts of issues like those pillow lines that used to immediately disappear in the morning and now linger into one’s day, or the more specialized issues facing a woman working in Hollywood. Reading I See You Made an Effort is like having a refreshing gab session with one’s girlfriends. Don’t miss Annabelle at the July 20 Smart Summer Reads event in Redondo Beach! – Maryelizabeth Blue Rider Press, $25.95. Carter fights against pressure from government officials, police, suspicious locals, and his newspaper bosses as he pulls up some cold cases that reveal the murder as the work of a serial killer. An unlikely ally helps him along, with information that only a criminal would know. In the end he gets his man – or does he? Tucker delivers a shocking finale. – Bunny Viking, $27.95. My friend Molly helped me coin the term “Darklinghosen” to describe Ruin & Rising – meaning “so good and with just the right amount of tragedy and sacrifice.” – Maryelizabeth Henry Holt & Co, $18.99.
