Scripture Reading (2 Chronicles 20:5-12) | Susan Tatum5 Then Jehoshaphat stood up in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem at the temple of the Lord in the front of the new courtyard 6 and said:

"O Lord, God of our father, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you. 7 O our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend? 8 They have lived in it and have built in it a sanctuary for your Name, saying, 9 'If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.'10 "But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, whose territory you would not allow Israel to invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them. 11 See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an inheritance. 12 O our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you."

SERMONNOTES

Have you ever faced a challenge where you said, "Am I strong enough for this?" Did you wonder where you would find the strength and wisdom to overcome a great problem or obstacle?

In 2 Chronicles 20, Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah faced not just one but three armies. They felt overwhelmed, afraid, and uncertain. What did they do? They turned to God and received help. They also prayed one of the greatest prayers of the Bible.

What can we learn from this ancient leader for times when we don't know what to do?

“After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to wage war against Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 20:1, NIV).”

“Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him (2 Chronicles 20:3-4, NIV).”

“We have no power to face this vast army. We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you (2 Chronicles 20:12).”

Lesson #1: If you don’t know what to do, ________________ God.

“Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God (1 Chronicles 22:19, NIV).”

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth (Colossians 3:1–2, ESV).”

"WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO"2 CHRONICLES 20:5-12

The great obstacle to seeking the Lord is ____________________.

“All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:13, NIV).”

“You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you (2 Chronicles 20:17, NIV).”

“Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the Lord your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful (2 Chronicles 20:20, NIV).”

Lesson #2: When God shows you what to do, take _______________ as soon as possible.

“...Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: ‘Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever.’ As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir...and they were defeated (2 Chronicles 20:21-22, NIV).”

Lesson # 3: When you face your enemies, keep __________________.

“…the Lord your God is the one who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you (Deuteronomy 20:4, NASB).”

What is God saying to you today? What is your prayer?

WEEKLY FOCUS: MIRA & SASHA ZIVANOVMira and Sasha Zivanov serve among the immigrant community in and around St. Louis, Missouri, predominantly working with refugees from the former Yugoslavia, which includes the countries of Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia. Originally from Yugoslavia, Mira and Sasha are uniquely able to minister to this population that comes to St. Louis with next to nothing. Partnering with Kirkwood Baptist Church and other local churches, the Zivanovs seek to provide outreach ministries that meet the needs of refugee families that have lost much to years of violence, conflict, and hardship but have arrived in the United States with hope. The Zivanovs cultivate beloved community through a weekly food pantry. They bear witness to Jesus Christ through friendship and an enduring pastoral presence among Roma and other immigrant families. They also seek transformational development through a tutoring program that leads to changes in the lives of young Roma, other students, and their families.

PRAYER FOCUS:Thank God for Mira and Sasha as they work hard to create a community for refugees, helping them once again feel security, stability, and peace. Pray for the immigrants and refugee families to find a home in America. Help us to find ways to help others in our community feel like they have a place to belong to.

SEASON OF PRAYERFOR NORTH AMERICAN MISSIONS

SUNDAYANNOUNCEMENTSLet's Get to Know Knoxville: Downtown Demographics and DreamsBegins March 10, 6 pm | Sanctuary/VirtualJoin us for Bible study and discussion this Wednesday, March 10, either in-person or virtually, as we look at downtown demographics and consider how we can best practically care for our neighbors. This is the first discussion in a series that will also address such topics as mental health, homelessness, and racial history in the downtown area.

Can You Help With External Communications?A new short-term team is being formed to brainstorm, strategize, and recommend communication avenues for how we can best reach out to our community and invite relationships. If you have a background in communications, experience in marketing, or simply a love for your neighbors and a desire to see our church communicate more effectively, then email Vanessa Moore ([email protected]) to express your willingness to serve. Meetings (in-person/Zoom hybrid) will be conducted monthly starting in April.

Deacon NominationsThe Deacon Selection Sub-Committee, in beginning its work to select new Deacons, requests your input in nominating individuals to serve as Deacons. Please take some time to prayerfully consider who God might call to serve in one of these leadership roles or if you feel called yourself. Please fill out a Deacon Nominations Form and return it to the drop box in the Welcome Center, email your form to Pam Neal at [email protected], or snail mail the form to the church to the attention of the Deacon Selection Sub-Committee. Please consider that Deacons must be church members who attend regularly, support the church financially, and exhibit a servant’s heart. Deacons are servant leaders with demonstrable spiritual maturity.

Season of Prayer for North American MissionsDuring the pandemic, our missionaries display great courage and vision to persist – and even thrive – amid great challenges. When needs in local communities arise, these missionaries step up to bring material help and eternal hope by the grace and power of God. Lives are changed, and you are a significant part of that when you pray and give. Thank you! As our missionaries change course, innovate, and share the gospel, please continue to help them move the mission forward. WMU encourages you to use the Prayer Guides for North American Missions during your personal prayer time and to give to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering and the Offering for Global Missions. Our goal is $20,000. www.AnnieArmstrong.com or www.cbf.net
