3P1006NT Table of Contents Introduction

Great Plains | 151-144B | 2019/03/14 1

IntroductionThis Material Rate Manual assists in the propersetting of seeding and fertilizer rates for the3P1006NT drill.

Independent mechanisms drive the main seed, native grass, dual seed, small seeds, and fertilizerapplications.

The rates in the charts are approximate. To assurethe most accurate seeding, it is recommended thatthe drill be calibrated for the desired seed at the timeof planting.

Some setup, operation, and adjustment material inthis manual may be repeated from the drill operatormanual. You need to be thoroughly familiar with drilloperations and adjustments before applying theinformation from this manual.

Many factors can affect rates including foreignmaterial, seed treatment, seed size, seed weight, field conditions, humidity, tire pressure, and tireslippage.

Safety InformationThe safety symbol indicates a potential safetyhazard to persons operating or near themachine and advises on how to avoid it.

The notice symbol indicates a potential formachine or property damage from operatorerror and advises on how to avoid misuse.

The information symbol indicates useful - butnot crucial - information for machineoperation, assembly, or adjustment.

Review the safety information in the operator manualbefore calibrating or making any adjustments to thedrill.

3P1006NT Table of Contents Calibration Overview

Calibration OverviewDetailed calibration steps vary with each box. Somegeneral information applies to all boxes, and isexplained here.

Calibration CrankThe calibration crank is stored at either the top frontframe for older drills, or on the inside of the left-hand3-point hitch for newer drills.

The retaining pin used for storage can also securethe crank to the jackshaft.

The following table shows what is being calibrated, serial number range, and where to locate the crankfor calibrating.

A drill with serial number A1067W and above has ashared jackshaft connecting both gearboxes, but therevolutions per area are different for the left andoptional right drive systems. ranking operates allmeters across the drill.

A drill with serial number A1066W and below hasindependent left and optional right drive systems.Cranking operates all meters on that side.

General Calibration ProcedurePerform the calibration with the drill hitched andraised. Install lift-assist cylinder lock. Calibration withthe drill lowered is not recommended, as the drivetires in contact with the ground prevent driveoperation.

Operate the crank in the tire rotation direction:

left end of drill or shaft - counterclockwise right end of drill or shaft - clockwise

A wide range of cranking speeds produce accuratecalibrations. For reference, at 10 kph (6 mph) fieldspeed, jackshaft rpm is 65 (about 1 revolution persecond).

On boxes not being calibrated, empty the boxes, setrate handles to zero, or remove a drive chain toprevent undesired meter operation.

Main and Dual SeedTo get the desired seed population requires foursteps:

1. selecting one of four drive types2. setting the seed rate handle3. positioning the seed cup door4. checking the seeding rate

The seed rate charts are based on cleaned, untreated seed of average size and test weight, andon factory-supplied tires inflated to factoryspecification.

The seed rate charts list the proper drive type andseed rate handle settings for various seeds andseeding rates.

Use the charts only as a starting point. Minoradjustments may be required. Set and check theseeding rate using the procedures beginning onpage 8, then adjust the rate as necessary.

Drive TypesThe charts list drive types as 1, 2, 3 or 4. Drive typeis set using the handle (1) on the gearbox cover:

at left front of drill for the main seed box, and at right front of drill for the dual seed and native

grass options.

Move the handle until the drive type number appearsin the handle window (2).

Each drive type corresponds to a specific gear ratio.

Seed Rate HandleThe seed rate handle controls the percentage ofengagement of the seed sprocket in each feed cup.The initial setting of the handle is given by the seedrate chart.

You can temporarily stop the main seed flow(such as for adjusting level/depth) with thehandle set to zero.

There are separate seed rate handles for thestandard main seed and the dual seed option.

To set the handle:

1. Loosen the wing nut (1) under the handle.2. Move the indicator (2) from the current setting to

about 10 higher than the new value, then back tothe new value.

3. Tighten the wing nut.

Seed Cup Door SettingsAt each main seed tube, adjust the feed cup doorhandle (1) for the seed size.

The handle has the following settings:

(A) Smallest seeds - wheat and similar small seeds.(B) Soybeans and similar larger seeds.(C) Oversize or fragile seeds, or if experiencingcracking with setting B.(D) Used for clean-out, not planting. If set to thisposition with seed loaded, it may be difficult to resetto a normal operating position.

Row ShutoffIf alternate row spacings are desired, the unusedrows can be shut off with optional feed cup plugs.

To install feed cup plugs:

1. Clean out seed. The seed box must be emptybefore inserting the feed cup plugs.

2. Insert one plug at each row to be shut off. Verifythe seed hose path before inserting the plug assome hoses do not make a vertical drop to theirrow units.

3. Review seed rate settings before planting.Perform calibration calculations with the activerow count.

Seed Rate Chart OverviewThe rate charts are an estimate of maximumseed rates. Actual results will vary based onconditions and machine maintenance.

There are multiple chart sections for some seeds, and the rates may overlap. Use the chart where yourdesired rate is closest to 50 on the seed rate handlesetting.

If your seed is not listed, find one with similar size, shape and density. Density of the test seed used todevelop the chart appears under the right end of thehandle setting values.

1. Find the seed type and choose Metric orNon-Metric, depending on your preference.

2. Locate the number closest to your desired seedrate. Use the rate closest to the seed rate handlesetting of 50.

3. Note the drive type for the chart rate row chosen.Note the seed rate handle setting required, at thetop of the column at that seed rate. This is theinitial value set on the seed rate handle. When a target rate falls between handle settings, you can adjust the handle slightly, as in theexample, but calibration may result in furtheradjustment.

3P1006NT Table of Contents Main and Dual Seed

Seed Rate CalibrationDifferences will exist between the tested seed andfield conditions used to generate the seed ratecharts, and your seed and conditions. To moreaccurately reach your target population, calibrating isrecommended.

Due to the large number of crank revolutions perhectare (acre), a practical calibration is one-tenthhectare (acre).

How to estimate the sample sizes:

Example

Calibration ProcedureTo perform this calibration, you need a scale andthree light-weight containers, each capable ofholding the expected SamplePerRow.

Weigh the empty containers.

To calibrate use either the tire or the calibrationcrank. If using the calibration crank, see “CalibrationCrank” on page 2 for the correct crank location. Ifusing a non-standard rotating/cranking point, rely onthe acremeter to determine the area.

Crushing HazardInstall cylinder lock on a raised drill toprevent injury should hydraulic system allowdrill to lower while working around it.

1. Raise the drill so the gauge wheel does notcontact the ground. Install cylinder lock.

If the gauge wheel is in contact with theground, cranking will be difficult orimpossible.

2. For dual seed calibration on drills withS/N A1211W and above, unpin the coupler andslide out of the way to disconnect the twojackshafts (see “Calibration Preparation forS/N A1211W+” on page 3).

3. Remove the calibration crank from storage andplace the crank on the end of the appropriatejackshaft.

4. Pull the seed hoses off the top of three openersand place a hose end into each samplecontainer.

5. Set the drive type and seed rate handle.6. Set seed cup doors across the drill.7. Disconnect the drive on any optional attachments

that are loaded or set the rate to zero (unless youare calibrating multiple boxes at the same time).

8. Load seed above the rows to be sampled. Loadmore than the expected sample size.

9. Rotate the crank or gauge wheelseveral turns tomake sure the drives and seed cups areengaged, working properly, free from foreignmaterial, and that seed is flowing steadily fromthe meters.

10. Note the current reading of the acremeter if usingit for the calibration.

11. Empty the sample containers back into the seedbox. Place the containers back under the threehoses to gather the metered seed.

12. Turn the crank at a steady rate for the number ofturns specified at “Calibration CrankRevolutions” on page 3, or until one tenth of thearea is counted on the acremeter. While turning, check that cups have seed coming into them.

13. Weigh metered seed and subtract initial weight ofcontainer(s).

14. Divide the NetWeight by three. Multiply by thenumber of openers on your drill, and thenmultiply by ten, to determine the total weight perarea seeded.

15. To get a more accurate rate, change the seedrate handle setting. Calculate a new handlesetting using the following formula.

Example

16. Set the seed rate handle to the new setting.17. Repeat the calibration procedure at the new

setting if your results were very different from theseed rate chart, or if you must operate near theends of the seed rate handle settings (0-20 or90-100).

18. With the calibration complete, store thecalibration crank, install any removed chains orsprockets, and connect seed hoses. If necessary, connect the coupler to normal fieldoperation.

19. Check that your tires are properly inflated. Seethe operator manual.

When drilling, check seeding rate by noting the areadrilled, amount of seed added to drill, and seed levelin the drill box. If you are seeding more or less thandesired, adjust the rate slightly to compensate forfield conditions.

3P1006NT Table of Contents Native Grass

Native GrassThe native grass attachment is for seeding fluffy, native grass blends.

Native grass mixes are too variable for seed ratetables to be useful. Seeding rate for native grass isdetermined by calibration, and set by:

drive type handle (1) at the ground drive gearbox(2),

driven sprocket (3) at the native grass box, usinga sprocket from the storage tree (4), and

rate reduction kit (5), using an alternate set ofground drive gearbox output and native grassjackshaft input sprockets.

Rate reduction affects calibration crankrevolutions per hectare (acre) .

to calibrate and adjust your drill to ensurean accurate seeding rate. Fine rate adjustment isdone with the driven sprocket.

Native Grass Rate CalibrationThis native grass calibration works on any type ofnative grass no matter what seed type, weight, ordensity.

Seeding Rate RiskAll native grass mixes vary in weight, seedtype, and density. You must calibrate eachmix.

The revolutions per area of the native grass cupallows you to calibrate the output weight by cupsprocket revolution per area.

The seed charts are based on drills with 5.70-8 8-plyground drive tires. Be sure that your tires are properlyinflated (see operator manual).

Calibration ProcedureTo perform calibration, you need a scale and one ormore light-weight containers, capable of holdingseed metered from three rows of the native grassbox. Weigh the empty containers.

To calibrate use either the tire or the calibrationcrank. If using the calibration crank, see “CalibrationOverview” starting on page 2 for the correct cranklocation.

1. Know your intended field seeding rate in weightper area.

Crushing HazardInstall cylinder lock on a raised drill toprevent injury should hydraulic system allowdrill to lower while working around it.

2. Raise the drill and install the cylinder lock.3. For dual seed calibration on drills with

S/N A1211W and above, unpin the coupler andslide out of the way to disconnect the twojackshafts (see “Calibration Preparation forS/N A1211W+” on page 3).

4. Remove the calibration crank from storage andplace on the end of the appropriate shaft.

5. Fill three or more native grass compartments atleast half full of seed. Pull seed hoses off openersunder those compartments.

6. Turn gauge wheel or crank several times to fillcompartments with seed. Turn wheel or crankuntil seed falls to the ground from each cup.

7. Place empty containers under the seed tubes togather the seed as it is metered.

8. Note the drive type (1) and native grass drivensprocket (2). Also, establish whether standardtransmission or native grass rate reduction isinstalled. This information is needed for step 10and for the calculations later.

If you are planting a mix similar to mixes plantedin the past with this drill, set the drive type anddriven sprocket for the previous mix.

9. Note the current reading of the acremeter if usingit for the calibration.

10. Rotate crank for one hectare (acre). See“Calibration Crank Revolutions” on page 3.

11. Check that the three seed compartments haveplenty of seed coming into them.

12. Calculate the area rate at current drill settings.a. Weigh metered seed and subtract the initial

weight of the containers.

b. Divide this number by the number of cupsmeasured.

c. Multiply by the number of openers.

If crank revolutions is one tenth of the fullarea, multiply by 10. (See Metric example onthe following page.)

13. If the measured rate is within 3% of your desiredfield rate, no further adjustment is necessary.Skip to step 21.

14. Look up the number of revolutions per area forthe current drive type, driven sprocket, andtransmission configuration at “Native GrassMeter Shaft Rates” on page 25.

15. Calculate the revolutions needed for the targetrate. Divide the target rate by the sample rate andmultiply by the calibrated revolution rate.

16. Find this number (or the closest number to this)in the shaft rates chart. If the setting needed isbelow 126 revs/ha (50 revs/acre), the ratereduction kit is required.

17. If needed, set the new drive type with thegearbox lever.

18. If necessary, remove the access panel at theright end of the native grass box, and exchangethe current driven sprocket for the new one fromthe storage tree. To change sprockets, loosen thechain idler and remove chain. Replace with thedesired sprocket.

19. If necessary, exchange installed sprockets at thegearbox with those from the rate reduction kit(see instructions in the rate reduction kit).

20. Repeat the calibration procedure if your resultsvary greatly from the charts.

21. Remove the crank from the shaft and store. If necessary, connect the coupler to normal fieldoperation.

When drilling, check the amount of seed you areusing by noting the area drilled, amount of seedadded to drill, and the level of seed in the box. If youare drilling more or less seed than desired, and youhave accurately calibrated the drill to your seed, youmay need to change your sprocket arrangement toadjust for field conditions.

3P1006NT Table of Contents Native Grass

The native grass attachment includes an agitator asstandard equipment.

Equipment Damage RiskDo not transport with seed loaded in thenative grass box. Transporting with seedloaded compacts the seed at the meterinlets and can easily clog agitators andmeters. Drive system operation in the fieldcan then damage the agitator and drivecomponents.

Seed LubricantAdd graphite seed lubricant after loading seed in thenative grass box. For humid planting environments, double or triple graphite as needed. Use 80 mL(1/3 cup) across the top of the seed mix.

See the operator manual for seed lubricantinformation.

Brome Grass SeedingWhen the seeding material is strictly brome grass, set an initial rate based on the brome rate charts, andthen calibrate.

1. Find the desired weight per area on the “BromeRate Charts” on page 28. Determine which drivetype and driven sprocket are required, and, forlow rates, if seed rate reduction is needed.

2. Set the drive type with the gearbox handle.3. Install the sprocket from storage on the

right-hand side of the native grass box. Tochange sprockets, loosen the chain idler andremove chain. Replace with the desired sprocket.

4. Fill three compartments at least half full of seedat the outboard end of the box. Pull seed tubesoff the openers at rows to be sampled.

5. To perform this calibration, you need a scale andthree light-weight containers, each capable ofholding the expected SamplePerRow. Weigh theempty containers.

6. Estimate the sample sizes.

Crushing HazardInstall cylinder lock on a raised drill toprevent injury should hydraulic system allowdrill to lower while working around it.

7. Raise the drill so the gauge wheel does notcontact the ground. Install the cylinder lock.

8. For dual seed calibration on drills withS/N A1211W and above, unpin the coupler andslide out of the way to disconnect the twojackshafts (see “Calibration Preparation forS/N A1211W+” on page 3).

9. Remove the calibration crank from storage andplace on the end of the appropriate shaft. See“Calibration Crank” on page 2 for the correctcrank location.

10. If the main or small seeds option are loaded, disconnect those drives or set their rates to zero(unless calibrating multiple boxes at the sametime).

11. Rotate the crank several turns to make sure thedrives and seed cups are engaged, workingproperly, free from foreign material, and that seedis flowing steadily from the meters.

12. Note the current reading of the acremeter if usingit for the calibration.

13. Empty the sample containers into the seed box,and place them back under the three hoses togather metered seed.

14. Turn the crank at a steady rate for the number ofturns specified at “Calibration Crank” onpage 2, or until one hectare (acre) is counted onthe acremeter. While turning, check that cupshave ample seed coming into them.

15. Weigh metered seed. Subtract initial weight ofcontainer(s).

16. Divide the net seed weight by three to get weightper cup. Multiply by number of openers on yourdrill to determine the total weight per areaseeded.

17. If the calibration sample is more than a fewpercent different than the desired rate, find a newrate based on the following.

18. Change the driven sprocket and drive type asneeded. If the correction went off the standardchart to the low side, consider installing the ratereduction kit.

19. Repeat the calibration procedure at the new rateif your results varied greatly from the brome ratecharts.

When drilling, check the amount of seed you areusing by noting the area drilled, amount of seedadded to the drill, and the level of seed in the box. Ifyou are drilling more or less seed than desired, andyou have accurately calibrated the drill to your seed, you may need to change your sprocket arrangementto adjust for field conditions.

Small SeedsSeeding rate from the small seeds option iscontrolled entirely by the seed rate handle on thesmall seeds box. No sprocket changes are required, and small seeds rate is unaffected by settings for themain seed or other options.

To set the small seeds rate, loosen the wing nut (1) atthe handle (2). Move the handle until the indicator isabout 10 higher than the intended setting, then returnit to that setting. Tighten the wing nut.

Set the initial rate based on the charts on page 31and page 32.

Small Seeds Rate CalibrationDifferences will exist between the tested seed andfield conditions used to generate the small seeds ratecharts, and your seed and conditions. To accuratelyachieve your target population, calibrating isrecommended.

Due to the large number of crank revolutions perhectare (acre), a practical calibration is one tenthhectare (acre.

How to estimate the sample sizes.

Example

Calibration ProcedureTo perform this calibration, you need a scale andthree light weight containers, each capable of holdingthe expected SamplePerRow. Weigh the emptycontainers.

2. Remove the calibration crank from storage andplace on the end of the left-hand drive shaft (see“Calibration Crank” on page 2).

3. Pull the small seed hoses off the top of threeopeners. Place the hose ends into each samplecontainer.

4. Set the small seeds cup handle to the initialhandle setting.

5. Load seed above the rows to be sampled. Loadwell more than the expected sample size.

6. Rotate the crank several turns to make sure thedrives and seed cups are engaged, workingproperly, free from foreign material, and that seedis flowing steadily from the meters.

7. Note the current reading of the acremeter if usingit for the calibration.

8. Empty the sample containers into the seed box,and place them back under the three hoses togather metered seed.

9. Turn the crank at a steady rate for the number ofturns specified at “Calibration CrankRevolutions” on page 3, or until one tenth thearea is counted on the acremeter. While turning, check that cups have ample seed coming intothem.

10. Weigh metered material. Subtract initial weight ofcontainer(s).

11. Divide the net material weight by three. Multiplyby number of openers on your drill, and then byten, to determine the total of weight per areaapplied.

12. Multiply the initial handle setting times thecorrection factor to obtain the new handle setting.

13. Set the small seeds cup handle to the newsetting.

14. You may want to repeat the calibration procedureat the new setting if your results varied greatlyfrom the seed rate chart, or if you must operatenear the ends of the small seeds cup handlesetting (0-20 or 90-100).

15. With calibration complete, store the calibrationcrank, install any removed chains or sprockets, and connect seed hoses.

16. Check that your tires are properly inflated. Seethe operator manual.

When drilling, check seeding rate by noting the areadrilled, amount of seed added to the drill and seedlevel in the drill box. If you are seeding more or lessthan desired, adjust the rate slightly to compensatefor field conditions.

Example

Small Seeds Row Shut-Off

If alternate row spacing is required for small seeds, optional plugs are available to block the flow insidethe seed tray.

1. Clean out the seed. The seed box must be emptybefore inserting plugs. See the operator manualfor clean-out instructions.

2. Before installing plugs, inspect the seed boxes forexisting factory-installed plugs which are blockingextra unused seed ports. Identify these plugswith an indelible marker.

3. Insert one plug at each row to shut off. Verify theseed hose path before inserting the plug, assome hoses do not make a vertical drop to theirrow units.

4. Review seed rate settings before planting.Perform calibration calculations with the actualactive row count.

When removing plugs to restore rows to operation,be sure to not disturb a factory-installed plug.

3P1006NT Table of Contents Fertilizer

Great Plains | 151-144B | 2019/03/14 33

FertilizerThe fertilizer meters are driven by a chain systemindependent of the seed meter drives, and areunaffected by drive type. Fertilizer rate is adjustedwith the rate adjuster at the fertilizer box.

Fertilizer application rates vary with fertilizer type, density and particle size. Relative humidity and fieldconditions can also affect application rates. Initiallyset the rate according to the charts, then calibrate thedrill to your material.

Accurately obtaining the desired application raterequires three steps:

1. adjusting the target rate for large differencesbetween material and chart density,

2. setting the rate adjuster (1) to the scale (2) valuefrom the chart, and

3. calibration - checking the predicted applicationrate, and setting the rate adjuster as needed.

Adjusting for DensityThe fertilizer meter rate charts are based on fertilizerwith a density of 1.04 kg/liter (65 lbs/ft3). If yourfertilizer density is within a few percent of that, youcan skip this step and rely on calibration to determinethe final rate adjuster setup.

For larger differences, particularly with very lowdensities, an adjustment can make the calibrationsimpler by choosing a different target chart value forthe application rate.

Density Conversion Chart

Adjustment ProcedureThe actual material density is normally on thecontainer. If not, weigh a known volume andcalculate it.

1. Find your material density in the table and theconversion factor.

2. Adjust your target application rate beforeconsulting the fertilizer rate chart.

3. Find the adjusted rate on the fertilizer rate chart.4. Calibrate using the rate adjuster for the adjusted

rate.

Fertilizer Rate CalibrationDifferences will exist between the tested fertilizer andfield conditions used to generate the rate chart, andyour fertilizer and conditions. To accurately achieveyour target application, calibrating is recommended.

Due to the large number of crank revolutions perhectare (acre), a practical calibration is one tenthhectare (acre).

How to estimate the sample sizes.

Example

Calibration ProcedureTo perform this calibration, you need a scale andthree light-weight containers, each capable ofholding the expected row sample.

Crushing HazardInstall cylinder lock on a raised drill toprevent injury should hydraulic system allowdrill to lower while working around it.

1. Raise the drill so the gauge wheel does notcontact the ground. Install cylinder lock.

2. Remove the calibration crank from storage andplace on the end of the left-hand drive shaft (see“Calibration Crank” on page 2).

3. Pull the fertilizer hoses off the top of threeopeners. Place the hose ends into each samplecontainer.

4. Make any density correction. Then using thechart for the target rate, set the rate adjuster. Ifseed is loaded, remove the drive chain for theseed box (unless you are calibrating seed rate atthe same time).

Chemical HazardFollow material supplier recommendationsfor safety precautions in handling fertilizer.

5. Load fertilizer above the rows to be sampled.Load well more than the expected sample size.

6. Rotate the crank several turns counter-clockwiseto make sure the drive and meters are engaged, working properly, free from foreign material, andthat material is flowing steadily from the meters.

7. Note the current reading of the acremeter if youwill be using it for the calibration.

8. Empty the sample containers back into thefertilizer box, and place the containers backunder the three hoses to gather meteredmaterial.

9. Turn the crank at a steady rate until one tenth thearea is tallied on acremeter or for the number ofturns see “Calibration Crank” on page 2.

10. Weigh metered material. Subtract initial weight ofcontainers.

11. Divide the net material weight by three. Multiplyby number of openers on your drill to determinethe total of weight per area applied.

12. For an accurate rate, recalculate the rate settingusing the following formula.

13. Reset the rate adjuster as needed.14. You may want to repeat the calibration procedure

at this setting if your results varied greatly fromthe desired field rate.

15. With calibration complete, store the calibrationcrank, install any seed chain removed andconnect fertilizer hoses.

16. Check that your tires are properly inflated. Seethe operator manual.

When drilling, check application rate by noting thearea drilled, amount of fertilizer added to the drill, andfertilizer level in the box. If you are applying more orless than desired, adjust the rate slightly tocompensate for field conditions.
