GREAT LENT SCHEDULEGREAT LENT SCHEDULE
March 1 – April 19, 2020March 1 – April 19, 2020
An annual lecture series taking place immediately after
Presanctified Liturgies.
It will last approximately 30-
40 minutes followed by an opportunity for questions and
discussion along with a Lenten meal.
WEDNESDAY MARCH 4
Why Asceticism? Many of us may not even know what the word “asceticism” means. We may have mistaken impressions or negative associations around asceticism. Yet, much of our Christian practice is ascetic, and that is a good thing. In this session, we define asceticism, and see it in its proper, positive and life transforming light.
WEDNESDAY MARCH 11
I Can’t Eat What???Fasting can be confusing and the rules can be unclear. We will break down the fasting rules of the Church, practical ways to apply them, and most importantly, get down to why we fast. Want a hint? It’s about a lot more than what we eat!
WEDNESDAY MARCH 18
Lessons from the MonasteryWe will look at some of the classic Christian texts that highlight the ascetic life, and look to the monastic setting for a stark contrast between what we want and what we need
WEDNESDAY MARCH 25
Asceticism in Icons and ArtA survey of ascetic images in the iconography of the Church and other art tradtions
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1
Asceticism in Our Day to DayWe are not monks and nuns, but members of a parish. Our lives are structured around our work and our families. How can we employ asceticism to focus and enrich our lives even amidst all of the pressures the world places on us.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8
What’s in It for Me?Ascetic practice is largely about self denial. Yet, the Church teaches that we discover our truest and best selves through prayer and fasting. We will discuss what we gain when we strive to give up the delights of this life.
