Gathang on Country Language Day On Wednesday 31st May students from Great Lakes College, Tuncurry and Forster campuses travelled to Saltwater to participate in a Gathang on Country Language Day. Jay Davis was the compere for the day and did an amazing job. We experienced a variety of fabulous cultural activities including music, sand rake art, boom-erang throwing, damper making, learning Gathang, didgeridoo/ clap stick playing and dancing. We also spoke to local Elders and heard their amazing local stories. We were treated to a delicious BBQ lunch and afterwards played some games. All students displayed excellent behaviour and we all gained better understanding and knowledge of Gathang Language. Irene Gosling Teacher and Aboriginal Team Member

Great Lakes College - Music News
Taree and District Eisteddfod
Earlier this term, students from all three campuses represented the College in the Taree and District Eisteddfod. Music staff from each campus were there to guide and support the students, having devoted many hours of time to rehearsing in preparation for the day. Held at the Manning Entertainment Centre, the eisteddfod provides a valuable performance opportunity with feedback for the many groups that participate. This year, achievements included two First Place trophies for the College Band and a Year 8 duo from Forster Campus (pictured). In addition, other ensembles received two Second Place, one Third Place and five Highly Commended awards. Many students also competed individually throughout the competition, receiving excellent results due to their consistent dedication and hard work.
Congratulations to all involved!
Education Week celebrations
Musicians, particularly those studying Music as an elective subject, are again invited to take part in our Education Week lunchtime concert at Stockland Forster early next term to help celebrate public education. All public schools in our area will combine to perform on Thursday, 3rd August (TBC). Students keen to be involved need to register their interest with a Music teacher at their campus from week 10 this term.
Grease
The lead cast from our College’s musical production, Grease, performed one of the headline songs for Tuncurry Campus students at a recent celebration assembly. It was a fantastic advertisement for the production that is showing over three nights - June 22nd, 23rd and 24th - in the Forster Campus MPH. Tickets are on sale at each campus now ($10/$15/$40) and will be available at the door each night. See advertising posters for more details.

P & C NEWS
At the time of writing this report, their P & C had not yet held its June meeting. I have received a report detailing what was discussed at the recent P & C Regional Meeting, which was held at Taree West School in late May. The main agenda focussed on canteen matters in light of the new healthy canteen policy which is to be implemented over the next three years. It will be interesting to see what these changes will mean for our campus canteens, and comments and thoughts will ultimately be gained from our wonderful canteen supervisors, Ros and Belinda. The media continues to report on grievances regarding the Governments announcement of Gonski 2.0. I have received several circulars from the P & C Federation expressing their concern about the proposed funding changes. The effect on funding for our schools will be explored, and clarification of changes will be sought, if possible. Apologies for this being a short report, but P & C meeting and Dolphin schedules have not really matched up this month. Guy Laden, P & C President

A Smashing Success Great Lakes College’s Boy’s Tennis Team have become Hunter Region Champions. The boys won the Hunter Region Final against a very strong Lambton High team on Tuesday 23rd May at District Park, in Newcastle. Their win was the culmination of a gruelling set of matches. The team consists of Nathan Monk & Blue Evans (both in Year 11) plus Sam Gibson & Eli Worldon (both in Year 10). The boy’s qualified for the Hunter Finals after a resounding win over Wallsend High, 8 sets to 0. The Hunter finals saw the top 8 teams in the Hunter play their quarter final, semi final & final all in the one day. In the morning’s quarter final Great Lakes drew Hunter Sports High. What looked like an ominous match ended in another 8 sets to 0 triumph for the Great Lakes boys. Nathan Monk’s three 6-0 wins were important in this win. The boys played Merewether High, the defending Hunter champions in the semi final at lunchtime. Our doubles wins, with particularly strong play by Blue Evans & Eli Worldon on set up a decisive 6 sets to 2 win. The already tired team then took on Lambton High in the final that same afternoon. With the result in the balance, Sam Gibson’s epic singles victory saw Great Lakes establish an unassailable lead. At 5 sets to 2 the match was called, with Great Lakes now the Hunter Region Champions. The boys all conducted themselves impeccably, with no signs of tennis tantrums & plenty of good sports-manship. The boys will now travel to the State Finals at Nelson Bay in mid-August to take on the best boy’s tennis teams in NSW. Matt Horne, Tennis Coach

Koori Girls Group
This term our Koori Girls Group have been painting animal cut outs designed by Kelly Holden. They have been enjoying this and we are so impressed with their artistic ability. The paintings are all so different, showing the girls have gained confidence in themselves by trying different techniques with the paint and tools they use. We have a large group this year and the girls have all been getting on really well. We enjoy painting to music and we are very spoilt with lovely afternoon teas from Mrs Gosling who makes the girls warm Milos and snacks. Mrs Gosling and I are really impressed with these lovely students. We are now focusing on dance practice for our NAIDOC assembly, which will be on Thursday, 29th June at 10am. We hope you will all come and celebrate with us. Karyn Pol Aboriginal Education Worker, Tuncurry Campus

Eisteddfod Debating News
On Monday the 29th of May, Miss King and her year 9 debating team - which consisted of Antonia Amato, Jesse Blake, Tara McLaughlin and Ashley Thompson - travelled to Taree to compete in the 50th annual Taree and Dis-trict Eisteddfod. We won the first round by default as the op-posing team forfeited which resulted in us moving onto the second round against St Clare's. After one hour of preparation and planning we took to the stage to debate the topic of "That we should always tell the truth" (to which we were affirmative) with Tara opening our case as first speaker - Ashley was second speaker, Antonia was third speak-er and Jesse was the brains trust as well as team leader. After a very entertaining and argumentative debate we unfortunately lost; however, we came away with third place for the year 9 and 10 debating section. We were all very proud of ourselves! Thank you Miss King for being an amazing debate coach and getting us through the Ei-steddfod! Written by Antonia Amato and Ashley Thompson.

Drama Eisteddfod News On Wednesday the 31st of May an excited group of Year 8 and 9 students took a bus to the Manning Entertainment Centre to compete in the 50th Annual Taree and District Eisteddfod. Year 9 performed first in the intermediate play building section, showing off our commedia dell'arte skills. We entered three groups into this section and came away with a 3rd. This group consisted of Emily Hartman, Ebony Cavanough ,Jacinda Povey, Zoe Degotardi, Brooklyn Paulson and Jasmine Smith. In the next section which was the intermediate unscripted drama, we entered 4 groups into this section each having 5 minutes to prepare a 2 minute piece. Some of the topics included "it's broken" , "we're running out of time" , "what if we don't make it" , and " the lights are on". The team that received the topic " it's broken " came away with a first place which we were very proud of , this group consisted of Antonia Amato, Ashley Thompson, Jemma Martin, Claire Newham and Tia Webster- Annand. Our school also achieved highly commended in this section with a great interpretation of the topic "we're running out of time". The year 8 group were up next, entering in both the unscripted and playbuilding sections. They came away with a well-deserved win and a 2nd place! All up we had an amazing experience and came away very proud of ourselves. Thanks to Mrs Donegan for being an amazing drama teacher and Mr Jensen for accompanying us on this day. Year 8 Science Excursion
On Thursday the 1st of June, eighty five excited Yr. 8 students
and five teachers left for a two day Science excursion to Syd-
ney. The two buses dropped us at Taronga Zoo, where we
had a lesson on food webs and ecology and got up close and
personal with a variety of Australian animals, including
snakes, lizards and frogs.
Other highlights at the zoo included the seal show, the bird
show, seeing the new baby elephant (6 days old) have a bath
with his mum and the baby pygmy hippo. We left the zoo and
caught the ferry over to Circular Quay, watching the sun set
behind Sydney’s iconic coathanger.
The students then had a very informative visit to the Sydney
Observatory. Having the chance to look at the moon through
the oldest telescope in the southern hemisphere and look at
Jupiter and its moons through a much more modern and
powerful telescope. We also learnt how to tell the difference
between a planet and a star when looking at the sky (hint, it’s
all in the twinkle).
We were lucky enough that our visit coincided with the Syd-
ney Vivid festival and the students loved the opportunity to
see the city skyscape, opera house and museum of contem-
porary art lit up with stunning light displays of a night.
On Friday morning we left our accommodation near Central
Station and joined the hustle and bustle of the rat race for a
walk through the city and Hyde Park to the Australian Muse-
um. The students enjoyed 3 hours of wandering around the
museum, especially the live spiders of Australia exhibition.
At lunch time we met up with our buses and were back at
school by 5pm.

Hunter Valley Zoo
We all met at school at 6:30am and hopped on the green bus.
We picked up Nathan at Nabiac
We then picked up Richard, Tyson and Kelly at Bulahdelah Golf Club.
We stopped at McDonald’s at Heatherbrae so that the teachers could
get a coffee and we could use the bathroom, we had some recess.
We arrived at the Hunter Valley Zoo about 9:30am. Mr McGill forgot
the bread for lunch so we had to send Jay and Tony back to town to
get some.
We spent the morning exploring the zoo, feeding the animals and lis-
tening to the Zookeeper talks.
Our favourite animals were the alligators, lions, dingoes, meerkats,
snakes, kangaroos and the bats. The Tapir was also very interesting.
The lion talk was amazing.
Jay cooked a nice BBQ for lunch.
We then went to cheer on Bailey run in the regional cross country final
in Cessnock.
We then came home

Girls Opens Netball
On Friday March 17th 2017, our Girls Open’s netball team took to Newcastle for the second round of the Hunter Region Open. The weather was against us on the day and after travelling we had to move to an indoor location to play against Lake Munmorah High School. The girls were determined to get through to the next round and outpaced and outplayed Lake Munmorah, defeating them 34 -21. As a result, the girls had to travel back down to Newcastle on Wednesday May 10th 2017 to play in the third round and were up against Hunter Sports High School, a familiar rival. The girls didn’t start as strongly as hoped but managed to get within two points of Hunter Sports at the third quarter mark, fighting valiantly to get so close. Unfortunately however, the game escaped us in the last quarter and the girls went down 29-22. All of the girls played extremely well and should be proud of their effort throughout the tournament. Hunter Sports went on to win the tournament and to represent the state. A big thank you to Eliza Hartman and Brooke McCar-thy who came along on both occasions to umpire – we wouldn’t be able to compete without these girls and they showed great skill in managing to success-fully umpire some really tough games. Another thank you to all of the parents who took time out from their work and busy schedules to get the girls to and from the venues, and who came along to support them (and me!). Futsal News
On Thursday May 18, nine girls from Tuncurry made their way to Port Macquarie Regional Basketball Stadium for the U16’s Hastings Futsal titles. The team consisted of Shari Lawrence, Sophia Power, Isabella Sweeney, Isabella Ragno, Taleka Giles, Tia Schubert, Jessica Henwood, Tash Johnson and Jillian Black. The girls had minimal time to ease into the day as we faced stiff opposition from the Port private school contingent in our first game. The girls were a bit disheartened as we lost the first two games by one goal but rallied to defeat a very strong Wauchope side 3-1. The girls had their mojo back big time and went on to defeat the other Anglican side comfortably. It looked as though the girls would not make the finals however a draw in the final game with Taree, who had been undefeated all day allowed the girls to sneak into fourth by one point. The semi-final had us against Taree again and unfortunately the girls ran out of steam and had a disappointing loss. Stand outs for the day were Jess Henwood who played her heart out in every game and Jillian Black who had never played futsal before and was enthusiastic and really showed why we are such a strong sporting school. Thank you to all the parents who supported the girls during the day and to the girls who were excellent in their behaviour throughout the whole day. Tom Riley, PDHPE teacher
Futsal Champions!
On May 16th the Tuncurry Campus U16 Futsal team travelled to Port Macquarie for the Hastings School Futsal titles which involved schools from the Manning and Port Macquarie areas.
The boys won every one of their first five games, conceding only one goal. They then won against St Columba Anglican College in the semi-finals before beating Taree High 4-3 in a thrilling grand final.
The boys conducted themselves admirably on and off the court and were excellent ambassadors for the college. The team will return to Port Macquarie for the Northern NSW Champion of Champions tournament in August which is a qualifier for the national tournament to be held in Queensland later on in the year.

Principal’s Report The Senior campus welcomes Mel Atkinson to our team. As a cross campus teacher from the Tuncurry Campus, Mel will be teaching Year 11 Geography at the Senior Campus. On Tuesday, June 6, we held the Year 10 Subject Information Night. We had a healthy representation of students from both College Campuses as well as students from the independent schools in Taree and students from as far away as Maitland. Next Saturday, June 17, we will hold our Open Day between the hours of 10am and 1pm for all interested potential students, family and friends. Last week we held the RYDA driver awareness day. The RYDA volunteers have assisted us in the last 2 years by holding this event on our site and this support has seen our participation rate rise. This year we had approximately 180 of our 300 Year 11 students attend. The RYDA program has the potential to save lives and the feedback from the organisers and the partici-pating students was again very positive. We held the Year 12 Parent/Teacher night on May 18 and we had a very good turnout of parents and students. The Year 11 Parent/Teacher night will be held on June 16. This year the NSW Government are funding Meningococcal vaccinations for all Year 11 and 12 students. Vaccinations will take place at the Senior Campus on June 15 and 16. At this stage, approximately 50% of our students have registered for this injection. Several of our students have been successful in the sporting arena and we congratulate:-
Our canoeing team for winning the NSWCHS and All Schools Champion school title. With special mention to Alex Fiebig and Mikayla Randall who are both the NSWCHS and All Schools canoeing champions.
The open boy’s tennis team who are the Hunter area champions and are now in the final 16 of the State knockout.
The open boys soccer team who after beating Taree 6 nil; Callaghan College Wallsend Campus 2 nil and Wingham 7 nil come up against Newcastle HS tomorrow for a spot in the top 16 of the State.
