Science Extension at the Shine Dome 2019
Our eight science extension students at the Senior Campus were recently invited to apply
to attend the prestigious 2019 Science at the Shine Dome event in Canberra. The
three-day event hosts Australia’s most influential scientists to celebrate and to honour
outstanding achievements in science. Only 10 students from across the state are to be
selected from a panel of Australian Academy of Science experts including Fellows of the
Academy. Three of our Senior Campus students, Eva Morris, Abby Stephens and Ella
Stephens, passed through the preliminary phase of the process, and Ella has now been
shortlisted to attend the valuable networking and academic event. Ella will have the
opportunity to meet Australia’s most distinguished scientists, participate in workshops and
attend the Gala Dinner at the National Museum of Australia.

On Thursday, 2 May, a small group of Tuncurry Campus
students from Years 9 and 10, travelled to Taree for the day
to compete in the annual Mid North Coast Science and
Engineering Challenge Day.
This event is held annually and is organised by The
University of Newcastle. Due to the small size of our team,
we joined with a group of students from Taree Christian
College to form a complete team. Our team competed
against six other high schools from the area.
At the end of the day after all the events had been
completed, and the points tallied, our team was victorious!
This gives us the opportunity to compete in the state titles
to be held in Newcastle later in the year.
To win the events, the students had to employ their
creative thinking skills, be able to work in a team and think
outside the box. There was a strong focus on career
avenues, with each of the eight events showcasing the skills
you will need for a large number of different Science based
careers.

Forster Campus Year 7 Camp
From the 20_22 March 2019, 117 Year 7 students and their
fearless peer leaders embarked on their first major
excursion as Great Lakes College Forster Campus students to
Adventureland. This annual camp builds on a long-held
tradition at Great Lakes College of building strong
relationships between students within year groups.
Over the three days, students partook in a variety of fun and
challenging group activities, with many focusing on
teamwork and team building. These activities were carefully
selected by staff and students to ensure that each day was
filled with opportunities to have fun and to work together as
a team. In addition, the camp was also a fantastic
opportunity for members of Forster Campus staff including
the Year Advisers, the SSO, the Head Teacher Wellbeing
and stage deputies to engage with the year group and begin
to develop rapport with all students.
Issue 3—Term 2—Week 4 Page 6
On camp, Forster Campus’ Year 10 peer leaders also had
the opportunity to further develop their leadership skills
and partake in activities with Year 7 students over the three
days. These students were an excellent resource and
upheld the school’s core expectations at all times. They
displayed true character and consistently proved
themselves to be excellent role models for our Year 7
students.
As a staff member and Year Adviser, the best thing about
the camp was being able to not only see the students
having an amazing time, but also watching them bond and
develop friendships that will last a lifetime.
A massive and heartfelt thank you must go to
Adventureland and their staff for an excellent venue and
well- run camp. Thanks must also go to all Forster Campus
staff involved. Without the involvement of all these people,
this camp could not have gone ahead and our students
would not have been able to have such an awesome
experience.

The Tuncurry Campus u/15 Bill Turner Cup football team have started their 2019 campaign
strongly. In the first round we travelled to Gloucester and showed an outstanding attacking
performance to record a comfortable 7-1 victory. In Round 2 we hosted Camden Haven at the
Tuncurry Sports fields and won a comprehensively 8-0. The team is progressing nicely with a group
of talented Year 8 students complementing our core of Year 9 students. Our next match will be
against St Clares High School Taree after they beat our college rivals Forster Campus 3-0.

On May 10 , the Great Lakes College Lawn Bowls team went down
to Bulahdelah Bowling Club to compete in the State Knockout and
trial for the Hunter Regional Team. The team consisted of Malachy
McTaggart, Tom Williams and Tom Whitbread. The boys made light
work of their early opponents and were sitting pretty at lunch with
3 wins from 3 matches. There were 4 undefeated teams left in the
competition, us, Callaghan College, Hunter River High School and
Hunter Sports. Hunter River were the talked about team at lunch
and were the feared opponents so naturally, we drew them to
progress to the final 16 in the state! The match saw plenty of
tooing and froing with Hunter River jumping out to an early 4 nil
lead only to see the might of GLC pull it back to get within 1 point
at 8-9 with 1 end remaining. Malachy was ‘skipper’ for the day and
marshaled the troops for a come back. The last end saw the Great
Lakes Boys go to work and put on a clinic. Tom Williams was
holding shot when the two 'skippers' came down for their bowls.
Malachy put another one in close and gave GLC a 2 bowl advantage
if things stayed as they were. The Hunter River took the aggressive
approach and tried to drive our bowls out of the way but was
unsuccessful. Malachy then laid a ‘blocker’ on the backhand side
up blocked Hunter River out of the game with the GLC boys taking
a 10-9 win on the final end! Malachy was successful in selection of
the Hunter Team with Tom Williams very unlucky to miss out.
Former student Jake Reid was on hand to offer some tips to the
boys for the day.

On the March 13, Reilly and I were lucky enough to be invited to accept a community award for
being the Great Lakes College 2019 School Captains. The feeling of being recognised from the
members of the community is indescribable and a feeling I will never forget. We are both so
honoured to be able to collectively work with the school, it’s students and staff, as well as with the
community in an attempt to better the lives of the people in it. We have found this role extremely
rewarding and hope to continue to be the best we can in our role. A huge thank you to the
Midcoast Council for inviting us to their chambers and making us feel so welcome.

Great Lakes College Table Tennis success!
The Great Lakes College table tennis team has progressed all the way to the final of the Hunter Region
competition! The squad consists of Josh Angus, Lachlan France, Cooper Sweeney and Rogan Dickson
and have performed consistently well throughout the competition defeating some highly fancied
opponents. Most recently, in the semi-final, we beat a tough Kotara High School in a see-sawing affair
which required a tie-break match to be played in order to determine a winner. Josh Angus and
Lachlan France (ranked 1 and 2) beat Kotara’s 1 and 2 ranked players 3-0 in this best of 5 set match.
The 4 boys have displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout this tournament and are a credit to
themselves, representing Great Lakes College superbly.
The final is to be played in the near future against the highly ranked and feared Merewether
Academic Selective High School at a venue yet to be decided. Merewether have breezed through the
pool stages of this competition and are past winners. However, our boys have been training hard and
mentally preparing and I believe are up for the task! Let’s go gents!

Professional Teachers Who Engage and Inspire
Psychology at the Senior Campus
Connecting our HSC students to post-school pathways and ensuring they have the necessary 21st
Century skills to succeed in their journey is central to the Senior Campus’s ethos. One of our own
teachers, Mr Scott Waring, has developed an entirely new HSC course in Psychology that will provide
our students with a framework for exploring the complex interactions between biological,
psychological and social factors that influence human thought, emotions and behaviour. It will allow
students to apply their learning to everyday situations including workplace and social relations,
whilst gaining insights into a range of psychological health issues in society.
The course is currently being assessed by the NSW Education Standards Authority, and we hope to
offer it to our Year 11 & 12 cohorts in 2020 as an endorsed course (non-ATAR). However, Scott has
been able to negotiate with several universities who have agreed to recognise the course as a
first-year subject, and thus will reduce the number of subjects needed to study at university
(and save students some money). This move has attracted the attention of the Australian
Psychological Society, and has published a comprehensive article written by Scott, and can be read at
psychology.org.au.
Scott Waring is a talented and committed teacher who has worked in all three campuses of
Great Lakes College.

Royal Easter Show Excursion
Agriculture students were kept busy in Term 1 raising and
preparing layer and meat chickens for the Steggles school bird
competitions. They learnt a lot about meat chickens in
particular during this process. These chickens were entered in
the Sydney Royal Easter Show. 53 students (1 bus full) left at
5am and went to the show for the day. They had a lot of fun
looking at the exhibits and going on some rides. Everyone was
very tired at the end of the day and happy it was the start of
the Easter Holidays.

PDHPE @ Tuncurry Campus
The PDHPE faculty has seen some changes in personnel in 2019, welcoming in Danielle Buttsworth
who has replaced Gemma Lawton for this year as she moves into the Head Teacher Wellbeing role.
Danielle brings a lot of enthusiasm and fantastic skills with her into the role.
It has been a busy start to the year. Our new Year 7 have settled in well to their new classes. In their
theory lessons, they spent some time looking at some of the many changes and challenges of
starting high school and produced some excellent “how to” guides, which will be passed on to the
current Year 6 students in our area. It has been great to see some of the outstanding talent in this
year group on display at our various carnivals. Special mention to Joel Fleming, who progressed
through to State for Swimming, Brianna Panos who not only won her age group at the college Cross
Country carnival but also managed to beat all the girls in the under 16 years group on the same day.
Finally, congratulations to Tarli Black, who excelled herself at the recent athletics carnival by winning
the College Champion of Champions, becoming the fastest girl across the college. Exciting times
ahead.
Our PASS students have been developing their understanding of Anatomy and Physiology, learning
about the body systems and their role in improving physical performance. As part of this course,
students also have the opportunity to help out our local primary schools in their organisation of
sporting events. Thank you to all of the students who helped out at the Tuncurry Public School
swimming carnival. A special mention must be given to Ashton Drinkwater who volunteered to
referee the PSSA Tuncurry v Forster Public School Soccer match.
The PDHPE staff have been focusing this year on incorporating a range of Information and
Communication Technologies (ICT) into our teaching practices. This includes utilising the range of
Google for Education applications in our teaching, learning and assessments. This term, we have
introduced an online assessment to great effect. It is another important tool to add to our range of
assessments.
Finally, we continue to encourage physical activity, not only in our lessons but also in our daily lives.
This is important for health and for long term wellbeing. We encourage all of our students to be
physically active for a minimum of 60 minutes per day. For adults, it is 30 minutes. If you would like
some suggestions on ways to do this, or if you have any other questions about what is happening in
PDHPE, please feel free to contact one of the PDHPE staff at any time.
