COLLEGE NEWS

Congratulations to all year 12 students, their parents and carers. They have made it to the end of their High School education. Students will now embark on widely different paths in the future, some starting reasonably soon, others choosing to take some time off before the next phase in their lives. Good luck to you all, and here’s hoping that those long awaited HSC marks reflect the work and effort that the students have put in. The P & C may be in a position to make a donation back to the school shortly. Final figures from the success of the campus canteens will be further discussed at the final P & C meeting in December. Ongoing financial success of the canteens relies on the outstanding effort put in by the many volunteers, and once again I thank them all for their time and commitment. As this is the final Dolphin for 2017, I wish all students, parents, carers and college staff the best for the upcoming holidays, and look forward to the first P & C meeting to be held in early Feb 2018. Have a safe and very merry Christmas and New Year. Guy Laden, P & C President

Principals report As we come to the end of the year the campuses and college will be celebrating student achievement at a number of merit and presentation assemblies. I encourage all parents/carers to come along to these events to share the acknowledgements of the partnerships we have with our local community members. Together we play a major role in the development, support and achievements of our students. The College Presentation Evening is on Thursday 14th December at Forster Campus commencing at 7pm. I would like to acknowledge staff that are retiring or leaving the college at the end of the year. Natalie Popple (TC), Sue Colditz (FC), Steffani Laurence (FC), Rose Smith (FC) and Tony Morrell (SC) are retiring. Sally Edwards (FC) was successful at Merit Selection for a school in Sydney; Brett Nowland (SC) gained a transfer to Sydney. We thank them for their outstanding contribution to the college over many years and wish them well in the future. To all the teaching and non teaching staff of the college thank you for your outstanding efforts during 2017. Our students are given wonderful learning opportunities in and outside the classroom as a result of your professionalism and passion. To our community members thank you for your continued support of Great Lakes College. Have a very merry and safe Christmas Graeme Jennings

Jay Pink and Oscar Salt have just completed their trip to the southern region of Australia to compete in the 5th and 6th stage of the Woolworths Grom Search. Starting in Victoria at Ocean Grove, Jay and Oscar competed strongly with semi-final and Round 2 finishes respectively. Then they headed off to recharge on the York Peninsula, SA where they encountered a remote area with not only quality waves, but wildlife as well. The highlight was a close encounter with a mother emu and its 10 - 15 babies, something you don’t get to see on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Middleton Beach was the destination for Round 6 of the Woolworths Grom Search. The boys were in great form and won or placed second in their heat rounds. Both Oscar and Jay made the final, which was a nail-biter. Jay finished with a 1st and Oscar a 2nd. Oscar also walked away with a $250 Woolworths gift voucher for Best and Fairest in his age group. Oscar has competed in 5 of the Woolworths Grom Searches and has made the final three times. Jay has competed in 6 Grom Searches making the semi-finals in 5 of the 6 and finishing with a first in SA. Congratulations to Oscar and Jay for an outstanding effort and we wish you the best of luck in your next surfing endeavour. Joh Pink, Forster Campus Teacher

A massive congratulations to Jay Pink and Oscar Salt who placed 1st and 2nd at the SA Woolworths—Wahu Surfing Competition last weekend. Thanks to all the teachers that helped assisting the boys to complete their exams before they left. Outstanding results boys, we are so proud of you. Carla Clough and Phil Koch

Careers News Year 10 student Kyeisha Green will be a familiar face at the Forster branch of NAB bank next year after she secured herself a highly sought after Indigenous School Based Traineeship. Kyeisha applied for the traineeship in July of this year through the Aboriginal Employment Strategy (AES) who have been assisting Kyeisha throughout. After meeting with a representative from the AES, Kyeisha attended an interview at the bank and having made an excellent impression she was offered the traineeship the following week. Kyeisha will still go through year 11 and 12 but she will be working at the bank for one day a week during term time and also during school holidays. Not only does this mean that Kyeisha will be receiving an income whilst she studies, she will also receive on the job training which will lead to a national recognised qualification in finance and guaranteed career opportunities in banking. We are very proud of Kyeisha’s achievement and would like to wish her the best of luck with the traineeship and her studies in the coming years. Scott Keough, Careers Adviser

On Friday the 24th November, 61 Year 7 students from Forster Campus travelled to Flip Out at Thornton on board 'Natalie', a double decker bus from Port Stephens Coaches. Mr Whight, Miss Owens, Miss Clough and Mr Koch had the pleasure of accompanying the students who have been in Gold RAP for most of the year. The excursion was a reward for students who have demonstrated excellent behaviour throughout the year. There were plenty of standout students who were very comfortable on the trampolines and were able to nail the double front flip into the foam pits. Many met their match once they were stuck a metre deep in foam and needed to be rescued by their peers. Congratulations all students on an excellent day, your Year Advisers have loved the year with you, we can't wait to do it all again next year! Miss Clough and Mr Koch

Year 7 Well Year 7, what a YEAR!! It has been nothing

short of full on. We have had a journey that started nearly a year ago with transition. We have shared many moments over the last 12 months. We have had tears, plenty of laughs, but most of all a lot of crazy. From BBQs, to camp, to rewards days, PBL days, sumo day, mates day and girls day. There has been so many highlights for us. We want to thank you all for such an awesome experience. As your Year Advisors, we are loving the adventure we are on and we can’t wait to continue that into Year 8. So here is a snap shot of our wonderful year together. Thank you. Stay safe over the holidays. Year 7 “17” was a blast. Bring on Year 8 “18”.

Principals Report

The SRC Induction Ceremony was held on Thursday 16th November. I was suitably impressed with the number of students who nominated for the SRC and congratulate those students who have been selected by your student body. Campus Captains for 2018 are Ebony Cavanough and Joel Elliott; Vice Captains are Halle Ford and Jesse Blake; Prefects are Emily Hartman, Emma Morse, Sam Diehm, Rory Murtagh. As I mentioned in my welcoming speech : “The college motto is One College, Three Campuses, Unlimited Opportunities’ The SRC is one opportunity schools provide in developing the leaders of the future. We are here to support, nurture and encourage the development of the leadership skills in all of our students. I would like to thank the outgoing SRC leadership group. Individually and collectively they have developed as leaders demonstrating integrity, courage, enthusiasm and initiative. I would also like to thank Ms Clark for her enthusiasm and dedication in her role as the SRC Coordinator. She has done a wonderful job since taking over from Mrs Keough mid-year. Mrs Donegan and the English / History KLA recently held a Year 10 60’s day. A fantastic day was had by all. Students dressed for the occasion, participated in a number of 60’s based activities and listened to the music of that era. I was suitably impressed by the enthusiasm and energy levels of both the staff and students on the day. Mr Freeman recently organised Bubble Soccer as a reward for the students’ participation in the Premier’s School Sporting Challenge. The day was a great success with numerous highlights and laughs. I am looking forward to a number of important events that are coming up. The Year 6 Orientation Day will be taking place on December 5th, the Year 10 Graduation on December the 7th and their Graduation Dinner on Friday December 8th. These days mark important milestones in the student’s lives and I am pleased to be part of these important occasions. December 14th is the College Presentation Evening. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students who are being recognised on the night for their hard work and dedication. It is something to be proud of and cherished. Finally, thank you to the Staff of Tuncurry Campus for your efforts throughout the year. None of the items I have reported on in this report and throughout the year would have been possible without your dedication and desire to see all students reach their potential. To the staff, students and parents, have a safe and relaxing holiday and I will see you all in 2018.

Mr Rosenbaum Relieving Principal.

Bubble Soccer On Wednesday the 15th of November, GLC Tuncurry students were involved in a Bubble Soccer Rewards Day. Students that were selected to attend were the best behaved roll calls of each year group during the Premier's Sporting Challenge, which is an excellent program that gains funds for the school. This year we purchased the purple playground equipment that is used for respite and lunchtime activity run by our amazing support staff. Over a ten week period the SRC carefully selected and voted for the best behaved groups. These groups then participated in an hour of bubble soccer in games of soccer, red rover and last man standing. The SRC were also invited to participate after their job of data collection and data entry of information that had been collected from all campus students that week. Well done all SRC members. And lastly, Teachers versus Students. The day concluded with one of the all time rivalries. Teachers went into the match as favourites after last year's close victory over Year 10, however this year the SRC invited some heavyweights to assist the cause in big Leydon Moore-Miller who was unstoppable. However the skill and prowess of the teachers reigned supreme, with a whitewash of goals to crush the students in this term's Teachers versus Students. A big thankyou to Shannon from Newcastle Bumper Ball for running the day. Thomas Freeman

Rugby Union

On Friday, the u15's and u17's boys and the girls Rugby Union sides went to Macksville to participate in the Rugby Union round robin tournament. It was a great day with perfect weather. The u17's boys played 4 games and played really well, unfortunately they didn't win against the two Macksville, Kempsey and Forster teams, but should be commended for their bold and diligent efforts in the games. The girls played extremely well for a bunch who had three players who had played before the day. They all dove head first into the game and gave it their all, a few like Alicia and Nichole literally dove into some of the opposition, it was great to see how far they all came by the last game. I'm sure they will do really well next time, although unfortunately they also came out with no wins against the Wauchope, Macksville and Forster teams. The u15's boys came out the Tournament champions undefeated. They beat Macksville, 4-2, Forster 1-0, Kempsey 6-2 and the other Kempsey side in a last minute close call of 6-5. Khan and Harry tore up the field and lead their team to victory. All teams deserve a big congratulations for being super well behaved and representing their school with pride. Well done everyone. Until the next one! Mr Jye Whatson

Year 10 History 60s Day The annual 60s day was another huge success at Tuncurry Campus on Monday 20 November. Students presented in a fine array of their favourite 60s style to celebrate the decade. Matt Horne led a heads and tails 60s trivia, Miss Lawrie ran a 60s dance move workshop before the dance competition commenced and students competed for best dressed, male and female. Mrs Lupton owned the microphone, Miss King was the organisation guru and Ms Doust kept those tunes rocking. The day consisted of limbo, twister, conga lines, hula hoops, dancing and general 60s frivolity. The coveted limbo prize went to Claire Turville for her impressive effort in a competitive field, while both Josh Wooton and Jacob Dimitri were surprisingly skilled competitors amidst the enthusiastic, yet rather untalented males hula hoop section :) For all the fabulous teachers who gave their time and energy to make this day possible, thank you. For all the groovy students who made this event a winner, love and peace to you. From Sharynne Donegan and the History team. NB. Despite students' popular belief, the History team are not, themselves, from the 60s.

Principal’s Report The Year 12 Graduation Assembly and Formal were both held on Tuesday November 14. Both these formal occasions were outstanding successes. The Graduation Assembly was attended by approximately one thousand three hundred people. It was held in our school Multi Purpose Hall and it really stretched our facilities. The hall is able to seat one thousand people which unfortunately was not sufficient for this occasion. We are now looking at holding this most prestigious event off site. Our thanks to Deb Carrall for heading the organisation team and to all staff for their support in making this event the outstanding success that it was. The Year 12 formal was held at Club Forster. Thanks to the outstanding organisation of Year Advisers Jann Smith and Dave Martin; Year 12 were able to enjoy this memorable occasion. While HSC results will not be released until December 14, we are aware that many of our 210 graduates have already been accepted into the university of their choice. We are also aware that several of the universities that do not offer places until ATARS are obtained, have informed several of our students that they have a provisional placement depending on their ATAR rank, which will be released on December 15. Our congratulations to Petra Flower who has not only been shortlisted for inclusion in Callback for her Dance Core Performance and her Major Study Dance Performance but she has also been nominated for inclusion in ARTEXPRESS for her Visual Arts Major Work and she has been selected for inclusion in OnSTAGE for her Drama, Design Costume. Congratulations also to Tully Church who has been chosen for selection in Texstyle for her Textiles & Design Major Works. These outstanding results will place both these young ladies in the top 5% of these subjects for these courses. During the week of November 20, the Senior Campus hosted approximately three hundred Year 10 students for the Senior Campus Transition week. The Year 10 students were inducted into life at the Senior Campus and were able to experience the courses they have chosen to study for their Preliminary HSC. These young adults were welcome in our school and we look forward to their fulltime enrolment in 2018.

Careers What a huge year it has been! Year 12’s have finished, Years 11’s are now Year 12’s and Year 10 have had their transition week. I would like to take this opportunity to remind our students that they should be checking their student email accounts on a regular basis, ie. at least weekly, so they do not miss out on important Careers information and opportunities. I would also like to remind the school community of the Senior Campus Careers website; www.greatlakescollegecareers.com . The latest newsletter available on our careers website has some great information on what employers are looking for, useful tips for successful interviews and job searching to name a few. Go to the website and check it out. Finally, a reminder to our 2017 HSC students of the Careers Advisory Service if they need any assistance or advice after the release of the HSC results (information below). I will be in touch with the 2017 HSC cohort in early February next year to find out what post school option they have chosen. Have a wonderful break and I look forward to working with all of our students in 2018. Janelle Evans, Senior Campus Careers Adviser

Andy Saunders, Biripi man and comedian performed as part of the FOCUS programme at Great Lakes College Senior Campus. Andy was a big hit with students who were impressed to have such a well known comedian in their midst. Andy has performed at the Melbourne Comedy Festival which was televised across Australia. Andy is passionate about the importance of family and anti-racism and is an excellent role model for our students. FOCUS is a wellbeing programme delivered to all of Yr 11 and Yr 12 and deals with issues relevant to the 16-18 age group. Local culture and Indigenous issues have been a theme recently and some Worimi Elders have also been interviewed by students as part of this unit. The Student Representative Council used this event to fundraise for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation which aims to improve student literacy rates in remote areas of Australia. Appropriately, the event was held in the library. “Andy was so funny! I had tears streaming down my cheeks!” said student Maddy. “He does such good voices. He is really a good performer.” Said student Nick. Students and staff at GLCSC would like to thank Andy for coming in and entertaining them. School has never been so much fun! by Carla Gillis
