Great Lakes Learning Community of Schools Academic Assembly

If it takes a community to raise a child, then it takes a

learning community to educate one. That was the

message from Lower North Coast School Education

Director, Mr Ian Northam when he addressed the

students, parents and community members at the

Great Lakes Learning Community of Schools Academic

Awards ceremony, held at Tuncurry Bowling Club on

the 16th August.

The first of its kind for our area, the awards ceremony

celebrated the achievement of students, who were

selected for being the highest performing all‐round

academic achievers from their respective schools in

the learning community.

The schools – Bungwahl PS, Pacific Palms PS, Forster

PS, Tuncurry PS, Hallidays Point PS, Nabiac PS and the

three campuses of Great Lakes College – that form the

learning community, work in partnership to

strengthen educational outcomes for students in

public schools across our area.

Mr Northam congratulated the students, citing hard

work and persistence as necessary to achieve at the

highest levels in education. He also paid tribute to the

principals and staffs of each school and the role that

they play in supporting student learning and

achievement from Kindergarten to Year 12.

The event was well attended by parents and family

members, who must also be recognised for their

ongoing support of, and involvement in their

children’s education and learning. Formalities for the

assembly were supported by student leaders from

Tuncurry Senior Campus, as well as a combined GLLC

band, involving students from Year 5 – Year 11,

providing music for the occasion. The learning

community would also like to thank Mr Terry Green

and the staff of Tuncurry Bowling Club for the use of

their auditorium.

COLLEGE SPORT

Narrow Defeat for Great Lakes College Squash Team Four Great Lakes College students travelled to

Kempsey on Friday 5th August to compete against

Grafton High School in the schools knockout

competition. The team included Steve Mallia, Todd

Riches, Michael Crane and Damien Bestwick.

The boys played exceptionally well, but were narrowly

defeated 3 – 1 by the strong Grafton team. Grafton

have now advanced to the semi‐final in the

competition.

Michael Crane played well to overcome his opponent,

but the Grafton team proved too strong in the end.

Todd Riches was ranked Number 1 for Great Lakes

College and played a tough game against Grafton’s

top ranked player. Both boys played at a high

standard, well above their age, but Todd was

eventually beaten by his opponent (who is 2 years

older), 3 games to 1.

The squash team represented their school well and

look forward to progressing even further in the

knockout competition next year.

Parents & Citizens Association Report

I had the honour and pleasure of attending the Great

Lakes Learning Community Assembly on Tuesday

August 16 at the Tuncurry Bowling Club.

This was an Assembly to recognise students, from the

local Public Schools and Great Lakes College, who

have achieved academic excellence. It was lovely to

see so many students receiving recognition for their

efforts and I extend my congratulations to them all.

Thank you to the organisers, the special guests, the

parents and family members who attended, and to

the Staff at the Tuncurry Bowling Club for making the

Assembly such a special occasion. I look forward to

more of these assemblies in the future.

At our last meeting we gave a donation of $3000 to

the College, to be used for the purchase of new merit

folders. We acknowledged the tremendous effort by

staff, students and parents in the production "Pippin"

and particularly thanked Ros for her work in supplying

the supper and the parents involved in supplying and

doing the makeup for the students. A great job by all

and I look forward to the next production.

We are still looking at the uniform policy ‐ items to be

included and the possibility of adding a navy cardigan

for the Girls in Years 7‐10. As times and fashions

change we need to be adapting our uniform

requirements to best suit the needs of our children.

The P & C continues to support the wearing of

uniforms by students and encourage parents to buy

the correct attire for their children, especially for

occupational health and safety reasons.

Our next meeting will be held at Forster Campus

Library on Wednesday, 7th September at 7.30pm.

Come and join us for a cuppa and some great

discussion about what is happening at our children’s

school. Everyone is more than welcome and we would

love to see you there!

FORSTER CAMPUS

Principal’s Report

Dear Parents

Despite the warmer weather, our grounds are still

quite wet. We have been desperately trying to lay a

slab with connecting cement paths so that students

who ride their bikes to school will be able to store

them in an area with high security. Money for this

project has been provided by a P&C grant made

earlier in the year. Since the decision to put in place

the pathway, the grounds have been water‐logged!

Perhaps things will dry out come the spring.

Last week I attended the special Academic Assembly

for our Great Lakes Learning Community students.

Forty students from our campus received awards –

these being for the first ten positions in their year

group. These academic successes come about as a

result of sheer hard work and a supportive home

environment.

The ceremony was a wonderful occasion and it was

great to have a large number of community there to

acknowledge these students’ achievements.

Deputy Principals’ Report

It was wonderful to see all the students who happily

volunteered to take part in the upcoming Relay for

Life. Organisers Ted and Denise Bickford were very

humbled by your response.

Forster Campus is taking part in the two promotions

from Coles and Woolworths. Please bring in your

vouchers and dockets to the front office.

Congratulations to Brodie Grieve for his successful DJ

debut in the Year 10 quadrangle. Hopefully we will see

this happening at regular intervals in the future.

Year 10 completed their subject selection interviews

this week. It was very pleasing to note that the

majority of students had taken our advice and

thoroughly prepared themselves for these important

decisions. Nearly all students had made their

selections and were mindful of the types of courses

they had chosen, with future pathways in mind.

Year 7 electives have been finalised and these lists

have been posted on the year noticeboard. Changes

can only happen with a note from parents.

Year 8 electives – Phase 1 has been finalised. Students

received their Phase 2 sheet on Friday August 19.

Selections were due to Mrs Hamilton on Monday

August 22. Final allocations will be published in due

course on the year noticeboard.

Premier’s Award: Three year 9 students ‐ Mitchell

Hamilton, Chris Bryan and Jake Schumacher received

a Premier’s Award for their gold medal performance

at the All Schools Triathlon Championships earlier in

the year. The boys were presented their framed

certificate from our local member, Steve Bromhead

on behalf of the Premier. The boys would like to thank

coach, Mario Schumacher and Bob Lee for applying

for the award.

Forster’s Got Talent Tuesday September 13 (Week 9). Ticket prices are $5 and must be purchased at the front office (Forster Campus) at least one day prior to the show. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door. Make sure you don’t miss out on this great event and don’t forget to purchase your raffle tickets to be in the running for some great prizes. Help us help our African sponsor school, Tlhageng Public School. Parents and Caregivers are welcome to attend.

Monster Raffle

All families have now been issued with ticket booklets

for our Monster Raffle which is being held in

conjunction with ‘Forster’s Got Talent’. There are over

$4,500 worth of prizes generously donated by local

business and some of the larger national companies.

The money raised will go to support our sister school

in South Africa, ‘Tlhageng Community School’ in

Molatedi – an impoverished isolated rural community

in the north‐east. The money will be used to purchase

educational supplies and help repair the buildings.

Tickets are $1. For each booklet completely sold and

returned to the school, the seller will go in the draw

to win one of two prizes: an iPod shuffle valued $110

and/or a mobile smart phone valued at $250.

The first person to sell $400 worth of tickets will win

an iPod shuffle dock/CD player valued at $150.

These are great incentives and it is hoped that the

whole school community will work hard to support

this fund‐raiser.

Study for Success

The trial exams for Year 10 will take place in Week 8

this term. All students should be studying hard for

these exams. Students should spend between 1‐2

hours, five nights a week revising their work by:

Reading over class notes

Completing revision sheets

Learning essential facts

Doing practice test papers/sample test papers under time restrictions

Using the Board of Studies practice test site and reading over sample responses

Using other on‐line sites such as ‘Maths‐on‐line’

Attendance during the remainder of the year is

essential. Students who miss school quickly fall behind

in their studies and miss out on critical exam tips.

Partnering with Great Lakes FM

Brodie Grieve is pictured on page 7 providing

lunchtime radio services to students in Year 10 at

Forster Campus as part of an individualised training

program through ‘Breakthru’ Solutions Service

Providers and Great Lakes FM Radio. Brodie has been

trained at the studio in Taree and has been able to

add to his work experience program by having the DJ

gear brought down to the school for one Friday each

month. The Year 10s loved it!

SASS Week

Members of the SASS team at Forster Campus were

recently presented with trees and chocolates in

recognition of the fantastic work that they do at our

campus. Pictures below are Margaret Redman, Chris

Education Week

I was thrilled to have three members of our campus

receive Regional Education Week Awards. These went

to Matthew Thomas of Year 10 for Excellence in

Student Achievement; to Mrs Gloria Rowsell for

Excellence in School Support; and to Mrs Wendy

Flitcroft for Outstanding School Leadership. Copies of

their citations are as follows:

Matthew Thomas

Matthew Thomas is an outstanding school captain, an

excellent student and superior sportsperson who

consistently models the college values of personal

best, respect, responsibility, cooperation and fairness.

Matthew has been an elected member of the Student

Representative Council for the past four years. During

this time he has worked hard as both a team member

and team leader on a variety of projects and has

inspired in others a strong school spirit.

Matthew is a high achieving student – regularly

receiving excellence and consistency awards for

academics. He is a reflective learner who strives to

improve his performance and achieve his personal

best. On the sports field in his chosen sport of Rugby

League, he is dynamic and renown for his prowess and

sense of fair play.

Matthew’s friendly approach and his ready sense of

humour have endeared him to all. He is a student and

School Captain of extraordinary calibre.

Mrs Gloria Rowsell

Mrs Rowsell models all of the best aspects of front‐

line service. A hard‐working and thoroughly

professional member of the School Administrative and

Support team at Great Lakes College, Forster Campus,

she epitomises the school’s core values of personal

best, respect, responsibility, cooperation and fairness.

Mrs Rowsell is deeply trusted and highly confidential –

qualities that are admired by all in the school

community. She mothers both students and teachers

– and often the parents as well. She has outstanding

interpersonal skills and is fair in all of her dealings

with others. Mrs Rowsell frequently has undertaken

the role of relieving School Administrative Manager

and has performed this task with excellence. As a First

Aid Officer, she is prompt and well versed in the

administration of emergency care and triage. Parents

and students alike value her compassion and

knowledge in this area. She frequents many out‐of‐

school activities and working bees and models true

citizenship.

Despite being a decidedly humble and quietly‐spoken

passionate advocate of public education, she is fun‐

loving and uses humour and laughter combined with

wisdom and compassion to provide excellent service

and to build strong teams. She is an outstanding

candidate for this award.

Mrs Wendy Flitcroft

A hard‐working, passionate and thoroughly

professional educator, Mrs Flitcroft is the face of the

Support Unit at Great Lakes College, Forster Campus.

Mrs Flitcroft (lovingly referred to as Flitters) has been

Head Teacher Support at the school for the past 9

years. Her deep knowledge of government and

Department of Education policies and processes is

second to none and she uses this knowledge to

effectively improve the outcomes of all students and

staff in her care. Always proactive in her approach,

Mrs Flitcroft has supported special needs students

and families to access not only the best education

possible, but also other community and government

based‐services.

The most outstanding feature of Mrs Flitcroft is her

leadership. She has mentored many newly established

Head Teachers, classroom teachers, leadership

aspirants and Student Learning Support Officers. Her

sheer excellence in all aspects of communication

empowers all to perform at their best – even the

school principal. However, the most significant

feature of Mrs Flitcroft is her total commitment to,

and passion for, the improved learning outcomes of

Special Needs students by using teamwork.

This citation comes with the total support of all staff

at Great Lakes College, Forster Campus.

TUNCURRY JUNIOR CAMPUS

Principal’s Report

I have been enormously proud of the achievements of

this campus at recent events. It was wonderful to

showcase the academic achievements of 40 students

at the Inaugural Community of Schools Assembly held

last week and to be present at Chatham High School

when Mrs Margaret Cross, Mr Wayne Barry and Year

10 student, Dana Fletcher were presented with their

awards at the Education Week Reception. My

heartfelt congratulations to all.

There have been excellent examples of school

citizenship recently with students raising money for

Jeans for Genes Day. STC students also took on the

challenge of running a very successful cake stall to

raise money for the 40 Hour Famine. Teacher Mr

Corey Smith, together with teams of students has

been replenishing the school garden areas. It is this

continued focus on service to the community which is

a very valuable part of the school culture.

Visitors to the school library are currently greeted by a

range of photos featuring men and boys enjoying

reading. This competition, aimed at raising the levels

of boys’ engagement in reading, has generated some

inspiring, thoughtful and very funny images.

The surprise café is a regular feature of Tuncurry

Junior Campus school life. Students in the support unit

together with their teachers present a lunchtime café

experience. Last week we were treated to an Indian

menu with the support of parent, Noel De Souza who

acted as guest chef sharing the secrets of his cuisine.

It was certainly a big hit with record numbers of

orders.

We are currently in the process of planning for 2012

and students are making their subject selections for

elective in both Year 7 and Year 8. I would like to

thank both the parents and the staff who attended

our recent subject selection night in spite of the very

cold weather. Working together for the benefit of our

students is what it is all about!

Deputy Principal’s Report

Hello everyone. I hope you are enjoying reading the

Dolphin. Today I want to discuss our expectations

around uniform and the new Behaviour Mentoring

Sheet that we will be using from Monday August 29.

Uniform

We are a uniform school, as decided by your P&C. It is

important to remember the reasons behind this

decision when asking why we might push so hard to

enforce it. Here, we share the site with the Senior

Campus and the TAFE. Here, on our campus, students

must wear full school uniform so we can identify and

ensure the safety of our students at all times.

There are Occupational Health and Safety reasons for

our uniform as well, especially when it comes to

shoes. Black shoes, with substantial uppers, allow all

students to participate in all of our practical classes

while fulfilling the industry OHS requirements for

adequate protective footwear. Practical classes

include Science, Visual Art, Technics, Textiles

Technology, Cooking classes and all VET classes. All of

our students then need to have the correct footwear.

Please consult the handbook or student diary about

our uniform requirements and work with us to ensure

your child is safe at school.

New Behaviour Mentoring Sheet

For our Behaviour Mentoring Program, we will be

starting to use a new sheet from Monday August 29.

This sheet, will contain the same information and

layout for all forms of behaviour mentoring. The only

thing that will change will be the colour of the sheet,

which will designate its purpose. It will be red if the

Principal is conducting the program, orange for the

Deputy Principal, pink for a Year Head Teacher, blue

for a Faculty Head Teacher or green if a student self

refers onto the program.

There is space for staff to give the students a score

from 1 to 5 for their performance in each period. The

indicators for what this score represents are on the

back of the sheet and at the top of the table on the

front of the sheet.

Furthermore, there is space for the student to

nominate the focus area for themselves in relation to

our core values. We believe that the students need to

understand how their demonstrating the core values

is important in how we get along together and build

effective, healthy, working relationships. We also

believe that it is important for students to understand

how the core values underpin the functioning of any

effective community.

Students can self‐nominate to be on this program as

well. Under these circumstances they will have a

green mentoring sheet to reinforce that they are

doing it for themselves.

On this program, the students will need to get the

sheet signed every night by their parent/carer and

return it the following morning to the teacher who is

doing the mentoring.

Year 7 Public Speaking Competition

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate

our Year 7 students and their families on making such

a great start to high school. Yes, we know it’s the

middle of Term 3 but there is still a long way to go

before they leave our little nest and it’s always nice to

know things are going OK.

We would like to make a special mention about the

students who made it through to the finals of the

Public Speaking completion and the outstanding

quality of their speeches.

Congratulations to Leah King (1st), who gave a great

speech on Memory ‐ we think; Caitlin Sweeney (2nd)

spoke on really, really, really weird super powers;

Geno Porrello informed us on the more intricate

details of tigers; Taylah Leung spoke to us about

excuses ‐ we’ve heard it all before; Tristan Mannow

revved us all up with stories about high powered

vehicles; Annabell Hill talked about the Super Natural

– Spoooooky; Emily Jego‐Rolfe compared the school

playground to a jungle – ain’t that the truth; Grace

Sneddon spoke about societies use of abbreviations –

OMG, could she be on to something?; and Michaela

Johnston shot a goal with her speech about Netball.

Kimberley Pike also made it through to the finals but

was absent on the day.

It was a great event and special thanks must go to Jez

Murray and Brittany Daniels who did a great job on

the day as Timekeepers and Chairpersons. Thanks also

to Mr Groth for his organisation and Mrs Ballard as

the number one adjudicator.

As the Year 7 Year Adviser and Year 7 Head Teacher

we would like to say how proud we were of all of Year

7. The finalists for their outstanding efforts, and the

rest of Year 7 that made up the audience, for their

excellent behaviour.

We can’t wait to see what you come up with next

year.

Tuncurry Junior Campus GATS Report

There has been no shortage of students making great

achievements at our campus this term.

At the start of term three, two Year 7 students, Grace

Sneddon and Matthew Moulder along with one Year 8

student, David Sweeney were lucky enough to be

selected to participate in an online GATS program

called eGATS. In actual fact, luck had nothing to do

with it. They had to complete two 1 hour tests and

were selected on their results. Another two students,

Scott McIntosh (Year7) and Gemma Pol (Year8) were

also chosen to try out for the program but didn’t

make it through this time. This is a prestigious event,

as only around 20 students from a very large drawing

area are selected and our campus has three students

taking part. Each week new tasks are set for the

students to complete, and each week the tasks

increase in complexity. I would like to congratulate all

five students for their involvement in the program and

wish Grace, Matthew and David all the best in the

challenges that lay ahead of them.

At our Celebration Assemblies, held every second

Tuesday we award GATS certificates to those students

who have excelled in one or more areas of their

education. This term so far, has seen a large number

of students from a range of different faculty areas

TUNCURRY SENIOR CAMPUS

A Photo’s Worth a Thousand Words

The winner of the Great Lakes College, Tuncurry

Library photo competition to capture an image of a

“man reading” has been announced. Year 7 student

Michaela Johnston took top honours with the cute

snap of a dad reading to his daughter. The photograph

cleverly incorporated a Rugby League theme which

especially appealed to one of the judges – Hawks

coach and College Principal, Graeme Jennings.

Second prize went to Jessica Craythorn (Year 12) for

her black and white composition of her dad reading

the paper sitting on top of stacked water pipes down

on the farm. Matt St Hill (Year 8) took out third prize

for his dark depiction of Dave Kernick reading, and

Joshua Quiring (Year 11) was awarded fourth place for

his unique comparison of teacher Mick Lawson and

the actor Ewan McGregor. The People’s Choice Award

went to Zachary Palmer (Year 11) for the classy photo

of his dad reading the paper on the hood of Zac’s

Mustang car.

The competition aimed to draw attention to boys’

literacy and show the importance of reading for boys

in adult life. 2012 is the International Year of Reading

and GLC Tuncurry Library aims to increase awareness

of reading as both fun and a necessary skill. The

photos will be on display in the GLC Tuncurry Library

to show students that real men read!

Great Lakes College, Tuncurry Library would like to

Sports Memorabilia, Newcastle Knights, and the

Tuncurry‐Forster Hawks First Grade Rugby League

team for their support of this competition.

Newcastle Airport Aviation Careers Day

Last Tuesday August 9, students from Great Lakes

College attended the Newcastle Airport Aviation

Careers Day as part of their studies for TAFE Tourism

and Events.

Organising teachers, Emma Coombe and Wendy

Gillies, stated that 'the day was a raging success

inspiring many of the participating students to further

explore career options in the aviation industry'.

One participating Year 11 students, Jami Rush said 'I

particularly found the session with the Jetstar cabin

crew and pilot interesting. After attending this

session and chatting to the staff, I am now fully

inspired to follow a career in cabin crew within the

aviation industry'.

Sessions that students participated in included:

Newcastle Airport Marketing, Jetstar Cabin and Flight

Crew, International School of Aviation, BAE, and

Newcastle Helicopters.

This successful excursion could not have been

organised without the support of Mid Coast Connect,

who facilitate work placement for senior VET students

and operate out of the GLC Administration building.
