In our Samaria … maybe this is the time we are being called to seek understanding and demonstrate Jesus love and compassion towards those who ideas and understanding challenge our own .. maybe this is the time to go into those places that are hard for us to embrace .. the shadowy corners of nationalism, racism, social prejudices that exist not only in the world around us but also within ourselves. Jesus tells his disciples in the beginning of Acts, to continue to carry out his mission. He tells them to be his witnesses

in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. This calling to be Christ witnesses holds both promise and chal-

lenge for us in this post-Easter COVID journey.

It is important for us to remember that although we are not able to come together in a building -our church is not

“closed” and our call to mission continues. Throughout this challenging time, like the disciples, we are called to devote

ourselves to prayer, to continue in worship as a community of faith, to preach, teach, and heal in Jesus name. We show

that we are a living church as we reach out with phone calls and cards for members of our community and in support of

essential workers. We demonstrate our faithfulness as we show up for one another on Sunday mornings via Zoom, make

masks, and deliver groceries or supplies to those who need them.

The light of Christ cannot be extinguished.

Christ’s church cannot ever be “closed.”

We MUST stop using this language as a people of faith.

Communicating that our church remains closed hurts us and our witness for Christ in the midst of this difficult time. We

CAN say that our buildings remain underutilized. That we are not meeting in-person for worship because our Savior

calls us to act in prophetic and sacrificial ways to care for the vulnerable and that work continues even when we are not

gathering in-person. We CAN say that an older congregation (we have been Christ’s witnesses going out from this

“Jerusalem” since our founding as a congregation since March 14, 1886) we are learning how to be CHURCH in new

ways.

There are 8,760 hours in a year. We worship together for 52-60 hours a year. What are we doing for the kingdom of

God with the remaining hours in our year? It is becoming clear that our buildings may remain “under-utilized” for some

time but Jesus continues to use each one of us to carry on his mission. He is calling us, today, in the midst of our current

crisis - perhaps especially in light of the current world crisis - to be HIS witnesses in the world.

In our Jerusalem … in those places and among people who are close to us … our homes, our families, and our congre-

gation.

In our Judea … in our neighborhoods, our cities, to join with other Christian brothers and sisters in the world to be wit-

nesses for issues that affect us all like poverty and disease.

In our Samaria … maybe this is the time we are being called to seek understanding and demonstrate Jesus love and

compassion towards those who ideas and understanding challenge our own .. maybe this is the time to go into those

places that are hard for us to embrace .. the shadowy corners of nationalism, racism, social prejudices that exist not only

in the world around us but also within ourselves.

To the ends of the earth … to understand mission as more than traveling to places where we have never been before ...

to see Christ inviting us into the unknown .. to be his witnesses because the world needs the living Church to be OPEN

to being his disciples 8,760 hours a year.

A note from Ariana Sanchez, Elder... In response to the Covid19 pandemic I wanted to do something to help. I saw a tutorial about how to sew a mask and that the hospitals did not have enough supplies, particularly the N95 masks. Staff was being made to reuse them and there was a call to make fabric mask to cover them to extend the life of the mask. I raided my craft closet to see how many I could make with my own supplies and reached out to my friend (nurse at RUMC) to see how many she would want. I made a big bag full of floral and nursery woodland scene patterned masks to give her with extras to share. I reached out to some friends who are first respond-ers and essential workers and offered to make them masks as well. After I shared on Facebook what I was doing, friends began to reach out for one or for someone they knew. Other members of our congregation and few friends have happily donated materials they had to keep me going, for which I am very grateful. As is seems like the general public should be wearing masks when we go out as to not unwillingly spread the disease, this is bound to be a continuing need for more than just medical workers. I’m happy to help as many people as I can and am not looking to profit. Any friends that insisted on paying something I directed them to the online giving on our church’s website. If anyone has materials they’d like to donate or their time and skill, it would be greatly appreciated.

*fabric 100% cotton, even scraps as long as they are at least 8 ½”x 15” *elastic *strings (something that will wash well, stay tied, but not knot up)

Please reach out to me or the church office if you would like a mask or can donate something.

Thanks and Stay Healthy, Ariana Sanchez

GKMC VBS 2020 It was with heavy hearts that our Joint Board made the necessary decision to cancel our annual Vacation Bible School. In light of the Covid pandemic and to ensure safety of our church friends and family we be-lieved this was the best decision for the health and safety of our children, staff, and volunteers. As we are able to plan for and provide alternative opportunities (virtually or in small groups) for children and families over the summer we will post updates to our website and Facebook page.

Camp Hope We are aware of the fact that many of you have been anxiously waiting to hear what would be happening at Camp Hope this summer. After significant discussion, prayers and reviewing of information that has been made available to us from the CDC as well as the ACA (American Camp Association), we have reached the incredibly difficult yet necessary decision to not have summer camps this year. We did not come to this deci-sion lightly and we are as sad about this as you are. Camp Hope holds a special place in all of our lives and knowing that the singing, laughter, and love of our campers and volunteers will not happen this summer hurts our hearts. We will be working with our Conference Deans to figure out ways to help you still connect with each other and with Camp Hope. This could include doing some program activities through a Zoom call or Google classroom, camp fires and nature walks posted on Camp Hope’s YouTube and Facebook pages. We are working on creating “Box of Hope” which will include some Bible Study activities, coloring pages, outdoor activities and a few Camp Hope Surprises! Please be sure to check the following three places for information and opportunities to connect with Camp Hope this summer and in the fall.
